CUSHING The College of Wooster Biology Department 931 College Street Wooster, Ohio 44691 ABSTRACT Myrmecomorphs are arthropods that have evolved a morphological resemblance to ants. Myrmecophiles are arthropods that live in or near ant nests and are considered true symbionts. The literature and natural history information about spider myrme- comorphs and myrmecophiles are reviewed. Myrmecomorphy in spiders is generally considered a type of Batesian mimicry in which spiders are gaining protection from predators through their resemblance to aggressive or unpalatable ants. Selection pressure from spider predators and eggsac parasites may trigger greater integration into ant colonies among myrmecophilic spiders. Key Words: Araneae, symbiont, ant-mimicry, ant-associates RESUMEN Los mirmecomorfos son artrópodos que han evolucionado desarrollando una seme- janza morfológica a las hormigas. Los Myrmecófilos son artrópodos que viven dentro o cerca de nidos de hormigas y se consideran verdaderos simbiontes. Ha sido evaluado la literatura e información de historia natural acerca de las arañas mirmecomorfas y mirmecófilas . El myrmecomorfismo en las arañas es generalmente considerado un tipo de mimetismo Batesiano en el cual las arañas están protegiéndose de sus depre- dadores a través de su semejanza con hormigas agresivas o no apetecibles. La presión de selección de los depredadores de arañas y de parásitos de su saco ovopositor pueden inducir una mayor integración de las arañas mirmecófílas hacia las colonias de hor- migas. Myrmecomorphs and myrmecophiles are arthropods that have evolved some level of association with ants. Myrmecomorphs were originally referred to as myrmecoids by Donisthorpe (1927) and are defined as arthropods that mimic ants morphologically and/or behaviorally. -

A central feature of the European Water Framework Directive are the reference conditions. The ecological quality status is determined by calculating the distance between the present situation and the reference conditions. To describe reference conditions the natural variation of biota in pristine water bodies should be measured. Because pristine water bodies are not present in the Netherlands anymore, water bodies (springs, streams, rivers and oxbow lakes) in central Poland were investigated. Macrophytes and macroinvertebrates were sampled and environmental variables were measured. The water bodies appeared to have a high biodiversity and a good ecological quality. -

Ferrington Jr. 17 July 2003 ABSTRACT FOR THE THIENEMANN HONORARY LECTURE THE ROLE OF CHROMOSOMES IN CHIRONOMID SYSTEMATICS, ECOLOGY AND PHYLOGENY WOLFGANG F. WUELKER* Chironomids have giant chromosomes with useful characters: different chromosome number, different combination of chromosome arms, number and position of nucleolar organizers, amount of heterochromatin, presence of puffs and Balbiani rings, banding pattern. For comparison of species, it is important that the bands or groups of bands can be homologized. Chromosomes are nearly independent of environmental factors, however they show variability in form of structural modifications and inversion polymorphism. Systematic aspects: New species of chironomids have sometimes been found on the basis of chromosomes, e.g. morphologically well defined "species" turned out to contain two or more karyotypes. Chromosome preparations were also sometimes declared as species holotypes. Moreover, chromosomes were helpful to find errors in previous investigations or to rearrange groups.- Nevertheless, where morphology and chromosomal data are not sufficient for species identification, additional results of electrophoresis of enzymes or hemoglobins as well as molecular-biological data were often helpful and necessary . Ecological, parasitological and zoogeographical aspects: An example of niche formation are the endemic Sergentia-species of the 1500 m deep Laike Baikal in Siberia. Some species are stenobathic and restricted to certain depth regions. The genetic sex of nematode-infested Chironomus was unresolved for a long time. External morphological characters were misleading, because parasitized midges have predominantly female characters. However, transfer of the parasites to species with sex-linked chromosomal characters (strains of Camptochironomus) could show that half of the parasitized midges are genetic males. -

Measey School of Biological Sciences, University of Bristol, Bristol BS8 1UG, U.K. (Accepted 30 March 1998) Abstract African clawed frogs (Xenopus laevis) in a South Wales pond ate a wide variety and size range of prey. Zoobenthos and zooplankton made the greatest contribution to diets, both numerically and by weight. Terrestrial invertebrates made up a small proportion of the diet numerically but a large proportion of the diet mass during the spring and summer. Nektonic prey were present throughout the year but made up a very small proportion of diet. Cannibalism was important when eggs and larvae were present in the pond. Electivity values were consistently positive for chironomids (larvae and pupae) and daphnids but were consistently negative for tubi®cids. In addition, electivity increased for larger sizes and pupae of Chironomus plumosus, but was low for the largest size class (>12 mm). Electivity of other taxa showed an increase when densities of chironomids and daphnids were reduced. Mean sizes of daphnids and cyclopods were consistently larger in frog stomach contents than in the water column, indicating that predation on zooplankton by Xenopus laevis is size-selective. Larvae display three independent modes of motile activity: swimming, crawling and whole- body respiratory undulation. Swimming and respiratory undulation involve the use of metachronal waves of body bending which travel in a head-to-tail direction. Whereas swimming is produced by side-to-side flexures of the whole body, respiratory undulation employs a sinusoidal wave. Crawling appears to result from an independent programme of muscle activation. Instead of a longitudi- nally transmitting metachronal wave of body flexure, a simultaneous arching of the body, combined with the alternating use of the abdominal and prothoracic pseudopods as anchorage points, produces a form of locomotion analogous to caterpillar-looping. Larval swimming has a set speed and rhythm and is an ‘all-or-nothing’ locomotory manoeuvre, but the neural programme controlling larval crawling is adaptable; switching from a less to a more slippery substrate resulted in a shorter, faster stepping pattern. The pupa displays two swimming modes, somersaulting and eel-like whole-body undulation, the former being principally a brief, escape manoeuvre, the latter being a faster form of locomotion employed to deliver the pupa to the surface prior to adult emergence. -

Poinar, Jr. Division of Entomology and Parasitology University of Californi a Berkeley, California 9472 0 ABSTRACT Nematode parasites of spiders and harvestmen are restricted to members of the family Mermithi- dae. A literature review shows that nematode parasitism of arachnids is worldwide and at least 5 1 species of spiders and harvestmen have been recorded as hosts of mermithid nematodes . Infected spiders have varied habits and it is postulated that two types of parasite life cycles probably exist and that the indirect life cycle (involving a paratenic host which falls prey to the arachnid) is probably th e common type . INTRODUCTION Representatives of the family Mermithidae are the only nematodes known to parasitize spiders. Their effect on spiders is similar to that on other arthropod hosts, namely hos t mortality at the time of parasite emergence . The difficulty in rearing adult mermithids from postparasitic juveniles that have emerged from parasitized spiders has prevented a systematic assessment of spider mer- mithids . However, it is apparent that mermithid parasitism of spiders is widespread an d occurs in various habitats . The present work tabulates previous instances of these associa- tions, adds some, and discusses the host parasite relationship . Reports of spider parasitism by horsehair worms are not discussed here . The latter, commonly referred to as Gordius, are not nematodes and belong to a separate phylum, the Nematomorpha . Early reports o f spiders parasitized by the horsehair worms may actually have involved mermithid nema- todes and vice versa. -

Natali Ortiz Perea ii ABSTRACT Freshwater habitats are important because they represent two percent of Earth’s water resources, are highly diverse in aquatic organisms and are the most productive and threatened ecosystem worldwide. Pollution, urbanization and climatic changes are responsible for drastic changes in these ecosystems. The creation of new ponds offers an opportunity to increase biodiversity, landscape connectivity and provide new habitat for organisms. However, new ponds might be a good habitat for mosquitoes to lay eggs. Mosquitoes have worldwide distribution and are responsible for most of the vector-borne diseases, affecting thousands of people and causing millions of deaths. British mosquitoes currently do not carry human diseases, but they are a biting nuisance. Their distribution, abundance, species composition and potential for mosquito disease transmission are intimately linked to the physical environment. Culex pipiens is commonly found in UK gardens and is a potential vector of viruses including the West Nile Virus. However, any environmental factors that significantly change the distribution and population of Cx. pipiens could impact future risks of disease transmission. Pond dyes are a cosmetic product for garden ponds and lakes; they inhibit algal growth and improve the overall appearance of the water body reflecting surrounding planting. The dyes block red light from entering the water, interrupting the process of photosynthesis and therefore inhibiting the growth of certain aquatic plants such as algae. -

This study was conducted in summer, spring and autumn (2010–2011) in the deep-water zone of the polymictic, strongly eutrophic Vistula Lagoon. Its objective was to test whether temporal changes in density of the larvae affect their horizontal microdistribution and burrowing depth. Horizontal distribution, as inferred from indices of dispersion and patchiness, was density-dependent. The larvae spread more regularly with increasing density. The decreased density was associated with an increase in clustered distribution. The larvae burrowed into sediments up to a depth of 25 cm. The maximum burrowing depth positively correlated with total density, but also depended on the size of the larvae. The smallest individuals (<10 mm) did not occur deeper than 5 cm. For more information, please contact [email protected]. THE ARTHROPOD COMMUNITY ASSOCIATED WITH THE WEBS OF THE SUBSOCIAL SPIDER ANELOSIMUS STUDIOSUS by SARAH N. MOCK (Under the Direction of Alan Harvey) ABSTRACT Anelosimus studiosus (Theridiidae) is a subsocial spider that has a diverse arthropod fauna associated with its webs. From south Georgia, I identified 1006 arthropods representing 105 species living with A. studiosus , and 40 species that were prey items from 250 webs. The arthropods seen in A. studiosus webs represented a distinct community from the arthropods on the tree. I found that Barronopsis barrowsi (Agelenidae) and Frontinella pyramitela was similar to A. studiosus in web structure and that B. barrowsi webs contained multiple arthropods. Also, previously known as asocial, B. barrowsi demonstrated sociality in having multiple adults per web. Lastly, the inquiline communities in the webs of A.studiosus and B.barronopsis contained many different feeding guilds, including herbivores, omnivores, generalist predators, kleptoparasites, and aranievores.
