- JOGJA EXPO CENTER FLOOR PLAN

- TENTREM CONVENTION ROOM AND CAPACITIES I. INTRODUCTION

Yogyakarta is the capital city of Special Region in , . It is re- nowned as the centre of classical Javanese fine art and culture such as batik, dance, drama, music, poetry, and puppet shows. The unique Javanese high culture of Kera- ton Jogja, as well as its proximity to world famous and temples, has made Yogyakarta the second most visit- ed tourist destination in Indonesia after Bali.

Since almost 20% of its population is com- prised of students and considering it is home to 137 universities, Yogyakarta is also well known as a student city. Consequently, many foreign students from abroad stay in Yogya- karta to study Bahasa Indonesia. With a rela- tively low cost of living, compared to other destinations in Indonesia, Yogyakarta can be a budget- friendly travel destination.

II. HISTORICAL SUBUD BACKGROUND

YM Bapak Muhammad Subuh received Latihan Kejiwaan for the first time in Semarang, Central Java. Through looking back at that time how the situation and struggle was during Bapak’s life, then we could realize about his noble mission for all mankind in this world.

Yogyakarta is closely related with the establishment of Subud as an organization. In order to make Subud legal and recognized, YM Bapak Muhammad Subuh registered Susila Budhi Dharma organiza- tion to Indonesian Government in Yogyakarta on February 1st, 1947.

In 1951, an Englishman of Syrian descent, Husein Rofé, visited Yogya- karta and was introduced to Subud. After experiencing Latihan, Rofé traveled around Indonesia and abroad. Leading to the first invitation for YM Bapak Muhammad Subuh to travel in 1957, and began the spread of Subud around the world.

Over the years, this cultural city has been host to many Subud events in Indonesia, from local Gatherings, National Meetings to National YM Bapak Muhammad Subuh Congresses. The latest one was Subud Indonesia National Meeting, and Husein Rofé in February 2012.

1 III. LOCATION

INTERNATIONAL ACCESS

Supported by an international airport (i.e. Adisucipto), Yogyakarta is very convenient to access. At this moment the city is building a new and bigger airport (i.e. Kulon Progo) which will be finished by 2017.

Currently there are three international airlines that have routes directly to Jogjakarta:

o Air Asia: Singapore-Jogjakarta everyday

Kuala Lumpur-Jogjakarta everyday

o Garuda Indonesia: Singapore/Tokyo/-Jogjakarta everyday

London-Jogjakarta every Wednesday

Amsterdam-Jogjakarta every Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday

o Tiger Airways: Singapore-Jogjakarta every Friday, Saturday and Sunday

Domestic flights available are: Air Asia, Citilink, Express Air, Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, Mandala, Sriwijaya Air and Wings Air.

Trains: there are 17 trains from executive class to eco- nomic class.

Around 70% of Subud Indonesia members live in the island of Java. The central location of Yogyakarta al- lows for reasonably priced travel, either by road, rail, or air transport. This is a significant advantage for Subud Indonesia, since as many members as possible would have the means to participate in the Subud World Con- Railway station in Jogjakarta gress.

2 ACCOMMODATION

As a tourist destination, Yogyakarta has a good selection of hotels and accommodation at a variety of price ranges. From five star and resort hotels (Tentrem, Sheraton Mustika Resort, Phoenix, Grand Aston etc); to very low budget accommodation (Sabah B&B, Wisma Joglo etc.).

Since Subud World Congress is the biggest event in Subud organization, the committee is planning to coordinate hotels and accommodations nearby the main congress site for the convenience of everyone participating.

VIII. CLOSING REMARKS Aside from all the facilities and conveniences it has to offer, Yogyakarta is closely related to Subud both in its conception as an organization and as part of Bapak Muhammad Subuh’s life. By being in Yogyakarta, it is hoped we can appreciate where Subud comes from and how it spread to the world. As Subud members, through the appreciation of this situation and struggle that was present during Bapak’s life, then we could realize about his noble mission for all mankind in this world.

Subud Indonesia is sincerely keen to host the Subud World Congress in 2018. In preparation, we are committed to find the right facilities at the right budget, to enable as many members as possible to participate. If this endeavour is successful, around 3,000 Indonesian members will be able to par- ticipate along with 2,500 - 3,000 members from abroad. This means around 6,000 Subud members will come together in one place, giving us the chance for the largest Latihan in recent memory and to experience how we can be together in harmony.

May we be able to receive Almighty God’s blessing and guidance in making this goodwill come true.

With warmest regards,

M. Ridwan Subud Indonesia

National Chair
