George Capen Says.· During the past few days, I have analyzed this year's Alumni Fund, now at 33,500. Frankly, while I am not disheartened, the results so far are not encouraging. When the National Alumni Association accepted on behal f of all the alumni a goal of $50,000, it was done because we knew that all alumni realize the importance to Trinity of an outstanding faculty. We knew, too, that a successful campaign would depend on these two factors: ( 1) Increased contributions from those alumni who have given in the past, and ( 2) contributions from the large number of alumni who had not contributed previously. The increases are just not coming through, and the rate of new contributors is very disappointing. However, a cheering trend is the fine showing of our younger alumni, those of the Classes of '49, '50, and '51. I know that Trinity alumni are interested in the faculty both because of the importance of good teaching at the college and also in recognition of their own personal appreciation of the men still at Trinity who taught them. But we are going to have to do a lot better in this Alumni Fund if the increases in faculty salaries given last Sep tember are to be covered.

Judge Smith - requiem mass THE WHOLE STORY COMPILED FROM JUDGE’S POSTS ON HIS PROJECT FACEBOOK PAGE ‘A LOST PROG-ROCK MASTERPIECE’ 24 September 2015 · So folks, I’ve decided that it’s time for me to put-up or shut-up about this blessed Requiem. I wrote it in 1973 -75, and it is perhaps my best music, but it is so demanding of resources that I’ve never before been able to contemplate recording it. Not that it’s particularly long; it’s not another ‘Curly’s Airships’, which weighed-in at 2 hours 20 minutes. It’s just a half- hour piece, but it does require the full, real-world participation of a sizable choir; a two- guitars, bass and drums rock band, a solo singer, orchestral percussion, and an eight-piece brass-section. And they all need to be good. Altogether that’s a big undertaking, but I’ve recently realised that I really don’t want to shuffle off this mortal whatsaname without having heard the thing. I would feel a failure. So I’m going to do it now while I still can. This is the story, it’s quite interesting if you are into this sort of thing... In the late 60s I co-founded a band called Van der Graaf Generator. We were one of the first wave of British bands (or ‘groups’, as they were still called) which were founded with the express purpose of developing some sort of music that went beyond the expectations of the Pop charts. Other established, and somewhat older, bands, who were already global ‘pop stars’ with strings of massive three-minute hits behind them, were also starting to move in this experimental or ‘progressive’ direction, and their millions of fans and their attendant, wealthy record companies, always eager to invest in the next big thing, meant that for a brief period of a few years, there was actually a possibility of making a career out of playing peculiar music.

ABSOLUTE EDITORIAL Absolute Editorial #3 Things are coming together nicely for us here at Absolute Underground. This is starting go be fun! We’re getting into a few free shows and people are starting to send in CD’s for us to review. We’ve got a lot of new people pitching in to make this rag better than ever. Emily Kendy joins us from Vancouver and brings with her a very impressive resume (The Nerve, Discorder, Terminal City, Exclaim...). We’ll be featuring a different Vancouver based band each issue starting with scum punks the Excessives. With the new Arena and Rod Stewart having played Victoria, you can just feel that this is going to be a great year for live music around town. I’m always impressed with the turnout and energy of the younger crowds at the all-ages shows. Even if you’re old you should go check one out sometime. You might find it invigorating to jump in a circle pit of mohawked fury. It was great hanging out with the crew at Spitfire Tattoo special thanks to Rick and Amanda. Electric Frankenstein was an amazing show and just proves that Victoria gets wicked shows all the time. A big middle finger to the asshole bouncers @ Diego’s who wouldn’t let me in even though I was on the guest list and then proceeded to tell the headlining act CHOKE to “pack their shit, they weren’t going to play.” This was after two huge idiots working the door beat up CHOKE’s drummer who weighs about a buck ten soaking wet.
