Carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife 21st of January - 22nd of February 2015 Every year, crowds of people come to experience this fiesta where everything is allowed and you have only one obligation: to have fun. Rhythm, color, flamboyance, luxury and of course the most brilliant spectacle. The Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival is the most “Brazilian” of all the Spanish carnivals, and it is famous all over the world for its popular flavor. For fifteen days, the streets of the city come alive with joie de vivre, freedom and extravagance. You cant miss it! It’s the place to be! Las Fallas Valencia 1st – 19th of March 2015 Las Fallas is Valencia's most international festival. In the week of 19 March, the city fills with gigantic cardboard monuments, called ninots, for a competition that is marked by art, ingenuity and good taste. The origin of the celebration goes back to the carpenter's parot: these were wooden lamps used to light their workshops in winter, which they would burn out in the street on the night before the feast of San José. At first they would make them look like human forms by decorating them with old clothes and fabric. In the mid-19th century, however, they began to increase in size and height and to improve their forms, becoming huge decorative statues. Although the most important acts are held during the week of the 19th, Valencia is busy preparing the festive atmosphere from 1 March with the mascletás, noisy firework displays that take place every day at 2pm in Town Hall Square.

The Changing Place of Animals in Post-Franco Spain with particular reference to Bullfighting, Popular Festivities, and Pet-keeping. Vibeke Hansen A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Sociology University of Essex October 2015 Abstract This is a thesis about the changing place of animals in post-Franco Spain, with particular reference to bullfighting, popular festivities, and pet-keeping. The thesis argues that since the ‘transition’ to democracy (1975-1982), which made Spain one of the most liberal social-democratic states in Europe, there have been several notable developments in human-animal relations. In some important respects, Spain has begun to shed its unenviable reputation for cruelty towards animals. Three important changes have occurred. First, bullfighting (corridas) has been banned in the Canary Islands (1991) and in Catalonia (2010). In addition, numerous municipalities have declared themselves against it. Second, although animals are still widely ‘abused’ and killed (often illegally) in local festivities, many have gradually ceased to use live animals, substituting either dead ones or effigies, and those that continue to use animals are subject to increasing legal restrictions. Third, one of the most conspicuous changes has been the growth in popularity of urban pet-keeping, together with the huge expansion of the market for foods, accessories and services - from healthy diets to cemeteries. The thesis shows that the character of these changing human-animal relations, and the resistance

FACULTAD de FILOSOFÍA Y LETRAS DEPARTAMENTO de FILOLOGÍA INGLESA Grado en Estudios Ingleses TRABAJO DE FIN DE GRADO COMPARATIVE TRANSLATIONS OF BULLFIGHTING TERMS USED BY R. FORD, J. HAY, A. HUNTINGTON AND E. HEMINGWAY José Manuel Toquero Martín [Vº Bº del tutor y fecha] TUTORES: Dr. José Manuel Barrio Marco Dr. Belén López Arroyo 2015-2016 Abstract The present paper is a comparative analysis of translations of bullfighting terms from works belonging to four different authors who travelled to Spain and wrote about this spectacle as reporters. The purpose of this study is to obtain a glossary of terms belonging to the field and to see how those terms are translated nowadays. The following pages illustrate examples from which we have taken all the terms. Moreover, there is an explanation of the usage made by each author. We have taken as a reference the works of Richard Ford, John Hay, Archer Huntington, and Ernest Hemingway to see the differences among translations by quoting the context in which the words have been used. We will see that depending on the period, the translations of the words vary though they are mostly borrowings from Spanish that the authors used.

Dynamic Spanish Trips La Feria de Abril Transcript in English La Feria de Abril – Transcript in English Hello and welcome to Dynamic Spanish! Here, you can improve your Spanish while you explore this beautiful country. Are you ready? Let’s go! In this episode we’re taking you to a festival in Seville called La Feria de Abril. Seville is the capital of the autonomous community of Andalusia, located in the south of Spain. Every year, around two weeks after Easter, the fair begins and runs for seven days. This is the biggest week in Seville’s calendar, and something the locals are really proud of. Every day at midday, a parade of horse drawn carriages takes people from here, all the way to the bullring; La Real Maestranza. Bullfights play an important part in this celebration, despite the mixed feelings that Spaniards have about this violent and bloody tradition. Bullfighting is not as popular as it used to be, with some regions, such as Andalusia, maintaining the tradition more than others. We’ll discuss this controversial topic in detail in a future episode. Attendees of the fair tend to dress very smartly, and that includes the well decorated horses. Women wear flamenco dresses with a matching flower in their hair, a shawl, and a fan. The men wear special suits with short jackets and flat brimmed hats. As you can see, it’s a very fashionable and colourful event. What do the men wear during the April Fair? A. Short jackets and flat brimmed hats B. Flamenco dresses with matching flowers in their hair C.

AN EXPLANATORY GLOSSARY OF CERTAIN WORDS, TERMS AND PHRASES USED IN BULLFIGHTING A Abanico: spread like a fan. Abano: a bull which comes out in a cowardly way, refusing to charge, but may improve under punishment. Abierto de cuerna: wide horned. Abrir-el-Toro: to take the bull out into the ring away from the bar- rera. Aburrimiento: boredom, the predominant sensation at a bad bull- fight. Can be alleviated slightly by cold beer. Unless beer is very cold the aburrimiento increases. Acero: the steel. A common word for the sword. Acometida: the charge of the bull. Acornear: goring with the horn. Acosar: part of the testing of young bulls on the ranch. The horse- man cuts the young bull or calf out of the herd, pursues him until he turns at bay and charges. Acoson: when the bullfighter is closely pursued by the bull. Acostarse: a tendency in the bull to come closer to the bullfighter on one side or the other when charging. If the bull cuts in close on one side the bullfighter must give him room on that side or he will be caught. Achuchón: the bull bumping the man in passing. Adentro: the part of the ring between the bull and the barrera. Adorno: any useless or flowery theatricality performed by the bull- fighter to show his domination over the bull. They may be in good or bad taste varying from kneeling with the back toward the animal to hanging the straw hat of a spectator on the bull’s horn. The worst adorno I ever saw performed was by Antonio Marquez who bit the bull’s horn.

Abstract. Bullfi ght-related performances in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Spain not only shaped major public events and everyday entertainment, but also—and to a large extent—determined the socioeconomic conditions of bullfi ghting in Spain in its early stages.
