The eongs revolve about her ex­ preseione of love for this man, her worship for him and for the child, which she bears in hie image. The depth of her hurt and frustration, ae he precedes her in death, ie extremely pathetic in the final song of the cycle, Nun hast du mi r den ereten Schmerz gethan, (Now for the first time, you have hurt me), There ie, within the music of Schumann, en opportunity to view the introspective, subjective soul of a fine artist, Hie songs re­ present hie own literary appreciation. Helft mir, ihr Schweetern (Sister, be kind, help) She pleads with her sisters to help prepare her to receive him. She wishes to banish all fear from her heart. He does not understand that her heart is so full of bliss. He reate hie head upon her breast. Closer and closer he is pressed, so that he might understand. By their bed there is room for a cradle. Only the mother who loves and nurses the child she feeds can know what it means to be happy. How sorry she is for men, who cannot feel a mother'e bliss. Her husband has hurt her for the first time by leaving her alone. The world is empty. She has loved and lived, and now there is no more life. Softly she draws back into heree lf • The veil falls. She is with him, her lost happiness, her whole world. INTRODUCTION The song cycle, Frauenliebe und-leben, by Robert Alexander Schumann was selected to be performed in reci tal and for purposes of this recital report. Several objectives were to be accomplished in writing this paper. Among these was the intent to achieve a better understand­ ing of the complete poetic and musical lyricism unique to Schumann's songs, particularly those composed in 1840, the period in which the Frauenliebe und-leben wee produced. In addition, an analysis of each of the eight songs in the cycle was undertaken to enable the performer and listener to have better technical understanding of the musical ideas invoked by Schumann and utilized in his songs. A cultural, political, and social overview of the Romantic Period of music during which this composer was working wee incorporated in this report. This portion was included with the purpose of adding understanding of existing attitudes and stylistic charac­ teristics of this time in history. The objectives generally discussed in the preceding paragraph involved research of an historical nature, supplemented by the individual dissection and analysis of each of the songs within the Frauenliebe und-leben song cycle. The recital-report offered this student and performer of music a scholarly approach to musical research, allowing a broadening of personal growth and greater respect for the works of Robert Alex­ ander Schumann. 2 GENERAL STYLISTIC CH~RACTERISTICS OF THE ROMANTIC PERIOD OF MUSIC Robert Alexander Schumann was born in Zwickau, Saxony on June 8, 1810. Tnis period o~ time early in the nineteenth century was to be labeled by historiane with the term •Romanticism.• In pursuing and identi~ing the etylietic trends o~ music in any century, one would aesume that the study o~ actual musical com- positions might provide all o~ the needed answers. However, more relevant to the problem would be to approach it ~rom a view o~ the social, cultural, and political circumstances surrounding the par- ticular period to be discussed. Gerald Abraham dates the "Romantic Period" in music ~rom 1800 1 to 1875. This report will include general observations of some o~ the main charaoterietics o~ this time in the history o~ music. No longer were there in the early l8,01 s great aristocratic pa- trona o~ the arts as had existed in previous centuries. " Purpose of Thesis This project has two components: a written discussion of the music of the Dichterliebe, and the lives of the composer Robert Schumann and the poet Heinrich Heine; and an audio tape of my performance of the Dichterliebe. The performance was the culmination of my study of the Dichterliebe, in particular, and of my voice studies, in general. Through the performance, I set out to share the wonderful music and poetry of the Dichterliebe as well as share my musical and vocal growth over the past four years. The written portion of the project was undertaken to satisfy my personal curiosity of the men who wrote the music and the poetry of the Dichterliebe. A study of the music without knowing the man who composed it or the man who wrote the words would be only half complete at best. Likewise, a study of the men and not the music would also be incomplete. That is why I included both venues of learning and experiencing in this project; and that is why I have included an audio tape of the performance with this written report. Denton, Texas August, 1957 PREFACE The purpose of this work, an analysis of the song cycle Dichterliebe (Op. 1+8) by Robert Schumann, is to recognize the special features of the songs which will contribute to their understanding and musical interpretation and perform- ance. The Dichterliebe was chosen as the composition to be analyzed because of its prominent position in the vocal lit.- erature of the Romantic period. An acquaintance with the life of the poet, Heinrich Heine, as well as the life of the composer of these songs and their relationship to each other contributes toward an understanding of the cycle.     Schumann, Heine, and Romantic Irony: Music and Poems in the First Five Songs of Dichterliebe Lauri Suurpaa Heine's Lyrisches Intermezzo and Schumann's Dichterliebe^ Schumann composed Dichterliebe op. 48 - probably die best known of his song cycles - in one week at the end of May 1840.2 The year 1840 has been called Schumann's year of songs. Besides Dichterliebe, he composed the song cycles Myrthen op. 25, Liederkreis op. 39, and Frauenliebe und -leben op. 42. The vast and sudden production of songs is notable, as before 1840 Schumann had composed songs only as a very young man during the years 1 827-28. 3 Vocal music occupied an ambiguous position in the early part of the nineteenth century. The bourgeoisie of the time showed great interest in vocal music: people sang lieder and were active in choral societies. However, the writers of the early Romantic period considered instrumental music superior to vocal music.     2 To Be Somebody: Ambition and the Desire to Be Different The context for difference This chapter aims to identify some of the bands that enjoyed chart success during the late 1970s and ’80s and identify their artistic traits by means of conversations with band members and those close to the bands. This chapter does not claim to be a definitive account or an inclusive list of innovative bands but merely a viewpoint from some of the individuals who were present at the time and involved in music, creativity and youth culture. Some of these individuals were in the eye of the storm while others were more on the periphery. However, common themes emerge and testify to the Scouse resilience identified in the previous chapter. Also, identifying objective truth is a difficult task, as one band member will often have a view of his band’s history that conflicts with that of other members of the same band. As such, it is acknowledged that this chapter presents only selective viewpoints. Trying something new: In what ways were the Liverpool bands creative and different? ‘Liverpool has always made me brave, choice-wise. It was never a city that criticized anyone for taking a chance.’ David Morrissey1 In terms of creativity, the theory underpinning this book which was stated in Chapter 1 is that successful Liverpool bands in the 1980s were different from each other and did not attempt to follow the latest local or national pop music trends. None of the bands interviewed falls into the categories of punk, disco or New Romantic, which were popular trends at the time.

    An Awareness of the Clara Motive in Dichterliebe by Robert Schumann by Jihye Yoo A Research Paper Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts Approved April 2019 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Andrew Campbell, Chair Rodney Rogers Russell Ryan ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2019 ABSTRACT This project details specific placement and usage of the Clara motive in Robert Schumann’s Dichterliebe. The analysis categorizes the motive according to its different shapes and relationships to the poetry in Dichterliebe. Four main permutations of the motive are discussed in great detail: the original motive, inverted motive, retrograde motive, and retrograde inverted motive. Schumann (1810–1856) composed more than 160 vocal works in 1840, commonly referred to as his Liederjahr. At the time, Schumann and Clara Wieck (1819– 1896) were planning to marry, despite the objections of her father Friedrich Wieck (1785–1873). Robert was inspired to write Dichterliebe because of the happiness-and anxiety-surrounding his love for Clara, and the difficulties leading to their impending marriage. Schumann used the Clara motive (C-Bb-A-G#-A), which incorporates the letters of her name, throughout the song cycle in special moments as a tool of musical expression that alludes to his future wife. Eric Sams (1926–2004), a specialist of German Lieder, has made significant contributions to the research of the Clara motive in Schumann’s music (through his book The Songs of Robert Schumann). However, research into specific locations and transformations of the Clara motive within the Dichterliebe are still insufficient. A further awareness of the Clara motive’s inner working is intended to help performers interpret this song cycle.
