No sustituye a las obras de descripción y estudio general o temático pero las com- pleta con eficacia y facilita una vía de acceso rápido a referencias y datos, de modo que el diccionario histórico se convierte en auxiliar insustituible y libro de consulta cotidiana para el profesional, al mismo tiempo que facilita mucho la ini- ciación en los estudios históricos. Hay muchos tipos de diccionarios históricos y, antes de presentar brevemen- te el que ofrece ahora el profesor Hinojosa, me gustaría recordar aquéllos que más suelen inspirar a los medievalistas e inspirarles a la hora de proyectar otros nue- vos, aunque omitiré los generales o los de otras materias –por ejemplo los geo- gráficos o los jurídicos– a pesar de que también sugieran muchos aspectos a tener en cuenta. Es evidente que, en el comienzo, fueron fruto de la erudición filológi- co-histórica: nacieron así obras magnas como el Glossarium mediae et infimae latinitatis de Du Cange (1678), que todavía seguimos utilizando, o diversas répli- cas regionales entre las que es preciso destacar en el ámbito peninsular hispánico el Elucidario dos palavras, termos e frases que en Portugal antigamente se usa- ran, de J. de Santa Rosa Viterbo. Ya entrado el siglo XIX, uno de los padres del medievalismo español, Tomás Muñoz y Romero, dedicó mucho trabajo a esta forma de presentar el saber, tanto en su Colección de fueros municipales y cartas- pueblas… (1847) como en el Diccionario bibliográfico-histórico de los antiguos reinos, provincias, ciudades, villas y santuarios de España (1858), pero no pare- ce que el ejemplo cundiera. Desde principios del siglo actual, los países de historiografía más avanzada se lanzaron a la edición de grandes diccionarios temáticos que afectaban en grado diverso a la Historia medieval. Baste recordar algunos títulos principales como en Reallexikon der Germanischen Altertumskunde, el Dictionnaire d’archéologie chrétienne et de liturgie, el Dictionnaire de théologie catholique, el Lexicon für Theologie und Kirche, el Dictionnaire d’Histoire et de Géographie ecclésiasti- ques o la Encyclopedie de l’Islam, en sus dos ediciones. De la dificultad de éstas y otras magnas obras colectivas da idea el hecho mismo de que no todas han con- cluido. Por otra parte, hasta fechas recientes no han comenzado a desarrollarse grandes iniciativas para la realización de enciclopedias globales sobre historia 12 medieval, con características bastante diferentes. La más completa es, sin duda alguna, el Lexicon des Mittelalters (Munich, 1980-1998), seguida por el Dictio- nary of the Middle Ages (Nueva York, 1982-1989), y por el más compacto Dic- tionnaire encyclopédique du Moyen Âge (París, 1997). Dejo aparte, por corresponder a finalidades distintas, tanto los repertorios de fuentes (A. Potthast, U. Chevalier…) como los léxicos conceptuales de diverso tamaño escritos para uso de estudiantes (P. Bonnassié, R. Fédou, J. Le Goff, J. C. Schmitt). ¿Qué ha ocurrido, entre tanto, en nuestro país? En 1952 se publicaba por pri- mera vez un Diccionario de Historia de España, obra de numerosos historiado- res, notable dentro de su carácter sintético, que ni ha sido ni renovado ni superado, ni aun por la parte correspondiente de la Enciclopedia de Historia de España (Madrid, 1996). Es más sucinto, en muchos aspectos, que el Dicionário de Histó- ria de Portugal, editado por Joel Serrâo entre 1960 y 1971. Y, en el campo de los diccionarios especializados, contamos con el amplio y, a menudo, excelente Dic- cionario de Historia Eclesiástica de España (ed. Q. Aldea, T. Marín, J. Vives, Madrid, 1972-1987). Así pues, falta mucho por hacer y por renovar, y parece que no es mal proce- dimiento llevar a cabo la tarea abordando simultáneamente diversos niveles temá- ticos, regionales, biográficos, etc., de manera que los diccionarios históricos puedan rendir de manera inmediata servicios útiles a todos. Me parece que el pro- fesor Hinojosa ha reflexionado sobre éstos y otros muchos aspectos antes de lan- zarse a una empresa tan digna de elogio como llena de dificultades que, con mayor frecuencia, suele ser obra de amplios equipos de trabajo. Pero ha sabido elegir unos niveles y dimensiones que pueden ser dominados con el esfuerzo individual, y beneficiarse de su mayor coherencia y unidad de cri- terio, aunque es mucho lo que ha tenido que poner a contribución para alcanzar los mejores resultados..

    Moors and Christians. Between Identity and Renewed Heritage in Mallorca Maria-Àngels Roque. European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed) The island of Mallorca enjoys a hybrid tradition that is the result of the settlement of diverse peoples in the Mediterranean throughout history. This tradition is clear in many elements such as one of the most popular events on the island: the Moors and Christians Festival, held every 2 August in Sant Elm, near Andratx. This festival has evolved throughout the island’s different historical eras and has been the object of several attempts at institutional ownership that, in all cases, have sought the participation of civil society. The ethnographic model proposed here enables us to understand how the diverse traditions and political interests that have dominated each historical era have been gradually combined in a small area.     The Jihād of the Caliphs and the First Battles of Islam: Memory, Legitimization and Holy War, from Cordoba to Tinmal JAVIER ALBARRÁN Universidad Autónoma de Madrid1 ([email protected]) Abstract This paper analyzes how the memorialization and commemoration of early conflicts in Islamic history influenced the performance and legitimization of jihād, especially on the part of caliphs who ruled in the Islamic West. Jihād is defined here as an ideology, a discursive tool that appealed to accepted and shared sacred elements; created a framework for the justification of specific actions on the part of the caliphs; and generated new authority. The paper also discusses the importance of the maghāzī and futūḥ, as well as its later impact, reception, reinvention, and re-contextualization. The focus of this study, however, is the key role that military expeditions during the founding period of Islam played in the conceptualization of jihād, which turned primitive episodes of war into legitimizing elements by utilizing the image of ideal behavior enjoyed by Muḥammad and the rāshidūn within the Umma. This study considers the Cordoban Umayyad caliphate and the Almohad movement, two periods during which al-Andalus was ruled directly by a caliph. By considering both chronological and geographical contexts, the paper analyzes the commemoration of the first battles of Islam, wherein both caliphates in the Islamic West presented themselves as a renewal of the early “golden age” of Islam. A comparison between the caliphates illuminates their similarities and differences. n the year 840/1411 Ibn Nuḥās died near Damieta while defending the town of al-Ṭīnah1 against a crusader attack.

Introduction In the five decades since Philippe Ariès suggested that perhaps “there was no place for childhood in the medieval world”,1 the study of medieval European children and childhoods has gained significant momentum and importance. Work by the likes of Barbara Hanawalt, Shulamith Shahar, Pierre Riché, Danièle Alexandre-Bidon, Nicholas Orme, Albrecht Classen, and many others, has comprehensively challenged Ariès’ argument that childhood was not viewed, in the medieval world, as a distinct stage of life.2 Drawing on a wide range of evidence, from school books and coroners’ inquests to art and toys, these scholars have broadened and deepened our understanding of how children were conceptualised and treated, both within and outside the family, and even brought to life the worlds of children themselves. Research has also been carried out on medieval childhoods in the worlds beyond Europe, geographically and culturally,3 but with the exception of the pioneering work of Avner Gilʿadi, medieval Islamic children and childhoods have gone largely unexamined.

Received: 27/12/2020 Accepted: 17/04/2021 Publication : 30/04/2021 امللخص: يقذم هذا املقال قزاءة جذيذة ﻷسباب اهحصار القوى املسيحية وهزيمة املسلمين في جزيزة مايوركا من خﻻل منهج ثاريخي في مجال علم الاجحماع . كما يلقي الضوء على منظومة القيم السائذة في مذينة مايوركا ، و القيم الاجحماعية والذينية بشكل رئيس ي ، قبل سقوطها. باﻻعحماد على مخطوطة ثاريخ مايوركا ﻻبن أميرة كمزجع لحوثيق الحقائق والقيم الحاريخية والاجحماعية املحعلقة بما ورد أعﻻه في مجحمع مايوركا. جشزح املقالة أي ًضا العﻻقة بين علم الاجحماع والحاريخ وأهمية الححليل الحاريخي في دراسة أحذاث وعمليات ومؤسسات الحضارات السابقة للعثور على أصول أو سوابق الحياة الاجحماعية املعاصزة وفهم طبيعتها وعملها. ويخححم املقال بأهمية املؤسسات في املجحمع في جشكيل منظومة القيم بطزيقة ثحسن الحياة الاجحماعية املعاصزة. الكلمات الدالة: الطزيقة الحاريخية في مجال علم الاجحماع ، مايوركا ، مخطوطة ثاريخ مايوركا ، هظام القيم. Abstract: This article provides a new reading of the reasons for the victory of the Christian forces and the defeat of the Muslims in the island of Mallorca through a historical method in the field of sociology that sheds light on the value system prevailing in the city of Mallorca, mainly social and religious values, before its fall.

    BETWEEN ACCULTURATION AND CONVERSION IN ISLAMIC SPAIN THE CASE OF THE BANŪ ḤASDAY* SARAH STROUMSA THE HEBREW UNIVERSITY OF JERUSALEM Abstract The High Middle Ages in Islamic Spain (al-Andalus) is often described as a golden age in which Jews, Christians and Muslims lived in harmony. The attested dynamics of conversions to Islam disturb this idyllic, static picture, revealing the religious and social pressures exerted on the religious minorities. The different reactions of the Jewish and Christian communities of al-Andalus to these pressures allow us to refine our understanding of conversion in the Medieval Islamic world. A close examination of the Jewish family of Banū Ḥasday shows more nuances and ambivalence than ‘conversion’ normally suggests. Key Words Coversion, acculturation, convivencia, al-Andalus, dhimma, Ibn Ṣāʿid al-Andalusī, Ibn Ḥasday.
