Legists (Jewish, Christian and Muslim) forged laws meant to regulate interreligious interactions, while judges and scholars interpreted these laws. Religion and Law in medieval Christian and muslim societies presents a series of studies on these phenomena. Our goal is to study Hthe history of the legal status of religious minorities in Medieval societies in all their variety and complexity. Most of the publications in this series are the prod- ucts of research of the European Research Council project RELMIN: The Legal Status of Religious Minorities in the Euro-Mediterranean World (5th-15th centuries) (www.relmin.eu). Au moyen âge, de Bagdad à Barcelone, des communautés importantes de minorités religieuses vécurent dans des Etats dirigés par des princes chrétiens ou musulmans : dans le monde musulman (surtout de l’Iraq vers l’ouest), juifs et chrétiens résidèrent comme dhimmis, minorités protégées et subordonnées ; tandis que de nombreuses communautés juives (et parfois musulmanes) habitèrent dans des pays chrétiens. Des légistes (juifs, chrétiens et musulmans) édictèrent des lois pour réguler les relations interconfessionnelles, tandis que des juges et des hommes de lois s’eforcèrent à les interpréter. Before the suggestion was made, John Tolan had kindly invited me to join the scientiic committee of his project RELMIN ( The legal status of religious minorities in the Euro-mediterranean space, ifth-ifteenth centuries ) funded by the European Research Council (ERC) with an Advanced Research Grant (ARG) for the period 2010-2015.1 I attended the kick-of conference that took place in the University of Nantes in October 2010 and became enthusiastic about both the aims of the project, and the team of young and energetic researchers involved in it. Moreover, I saw in the collaboration with John Tolan and his project a way to enrich my own research project KOHEPOCU (Knowledge, he- resy, and political culture in the islamic West eighth-ifteenth centuries), funded also by the ERC with an ARG for the period 2009-2014.2 The study of the status of religious minorities in theH Islamic West - including al-Andalus, Sicily and North Africa with the exception of Egypt - is in fact a crucial issue for a better understanding of the ways in which Islamic legal and theological doctrines and norms intersect with legal and social practices, and of the changing poli- tical backgrounds for the application, deviation or abandonment of such norms.

One of the most important specific qualities of the Islamic civilization is that it is a well-balanced civilization that brought together science and faith, struck a balance between spirit and matter and did not separate this world from the Hereafter. This is what distinguishes the Islamic civilization from other civilizations which attach primary importance to the material aspect of life, physical needs and human instincts, and attach greater attention to this world by striving to instantly satisfy desires of the flesh, without finding a proper place for God and the Hereafter in their philosophies and education systems. The Islamic civilization drew humankind closer to God, connected the earth and heavens, subordinated this world to the Hereafter, connected spirit and matter, struck a balance between mind and heart, and created a link between science and faith by elevating the importance of moral development to the level of importance of material progress. It is owing to this that the Islamic civilization gave an immense contribution to the development of global civilization. Another specific characteristic of the Islamic civilization is that it spread the spirit of justice, impartiality and tolerance among people.

    Moors and Christians. Between Identity and Renewed Heritage in Mallorca Maria-Àngels Roque. European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed) The island of Mallorca enjoys a hybrid tradition that is the result of the settlement of diverse peoples in the Mediterranean throughout history. This tradition is clear in many elements such as one of the most popular events on the island: the Moors and Christians Festival, held every 2 August in Sant Elm, near Andratx. This festival has evolved throughout the island’s different historical eras and has been the object of several attempts at institutional ownership that, in all cases, have sought the participation of civil society. The ethnographic model proposed here enables us to understand how the diverse traditions and political interests that have dominated each historical era have been gradually combined in a small area.     THE SEARCH FOR KNOWLEDGE: ANDALUSI SCHOLARS AND THEIR TRAVELS TO THE ISLAMIC EAST María Luisa Ávila Escuela de Estudios Árabes, CSIC Granada In Andalusi biographical dictionaries, the portrait of the individual scholar follows a pre-established outline, centered upon his place of birth, the names of his masters and disciples, the places he visited during his “period of formation” and his career and, eventually, his positions in the administration. Information about his personal attitudes or family ties is nearly always absent in these sources, mainly interested as they were, in the position of scholars as transmitters of knowledge. For Andalusi scholars, traveling to the Islamic East was an essential step in their period of formation, at least during the first centuries of the history of al-Andalus. Biographers, then, dutifully recorded the names of Eastern masters and places visited by scholars during these journeys to the East, coupled also with the pilgrimage to Mecca. This kind of biographical information offers a prosopographical material of outstanding interest, the analysis of which sheds a welcome light on the formative years and study patterns of Andalusi scholars. On this occasion I will restrict the analysis to the oldest of Andalusi biographical dictionaries, that of Ibn Harith al-Khushani, known as Akhbar al-fuqaha, wa-l-muhaddithin,1 a basic source for the study of intellectual life in al-Andalus during the ninth and tenth centuries.2 Through the study of the prosopographical material in this dictionary I intend to establish, first, the age at which scholars began their period of formation; second, when the travel to the East (the rihla) was usually undertaken, and, finally, how long these scholars stayed in the East.

It also provides information on the current status of these works. In the following sections, the famous historians of Andalusia and their works are listed in chronological order. Reasons for the writing of historical works, methods, which periods they cover, modern editions are studied. The last section analyzes the historians of the last period of Andalusia and their works. The article also explores the topics on which historical works are written. Works on the history of the country, the history of individuals, the history of culture and science were analyzed. Key words: Andalusia, Cordoba, Historiography, Ansab (Lineage), Umayyad, Andalusian scholars, Arabs. INTRODUCTION The country of Andalusia was conquered by the Muslims in 711-714. After that, the religion and teachings of Islam began to enter this land. Various Islamic sciences such as hadith, tafsir, and fiqh began to spread. In the early days after the conquest of Andalusia, the spread of science in the new country was directly influenced by the Muslim East. The same situation was observed in the science of history. The land of Egypt served as a bridge in the entry of Eastern sciences into Andalusia.
