The Rita Williams Popular Song Collection a Handlist
The Rita Williams Popular Song Collection A Handlist A wide-ranging collection of c. 4000 individual popular songs, dating from the 1920s to the 1970s and including songs from films and musicals. Originally the personal collection of the singer Rita Williams, with later additions, it includes songs in various European languages and some in Afrikaans. Rita Williams sang with the Billy Cotton Club, among other groups, and made numerous recordings in the 1940s and 1950s. The songs are arranged alphabetically by title. The Rita Williams Popular Song Collection is a closed access collection. Please ask at the enquiry desk if you would like to use it. Please note that all items are reference only and in most cases it is necessary to obtain permission from the relevant copyright holder before they can be photocopied. Quite a lot of attention has been given to film and television versions of the novels, many of which are very distinguished. The stage and screen musical based on his work, essentially a product of the last fifty years, has been neither as studied nor as respected. This paper looks at the con- nection between Dickens’s novels, the celebration of “London-ness” and its articulation in popular forms of working-class music and song. -

August 11, 1915; d. July 2, 2006) was born in Rochester, NY. He graduated from the University of Rochester in 1937 with distinction with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics; he was also elected to the academic honors society Phi Beta Kappa. In 1941, he moved to Washington, DC, to work in the Army Ordnance Division of the War Department as a research analyst. He left that position in 1954 to restore a house he purchased in Georgetown. Subsequently, in 1956, he joined the National Automobile Dealers Association as a research analyst and worked there until his retirement in 1972. He was an avid musician and concert-goer: he was a talented pianist, and he composed music throughout his life. -

Chapel Hill 2009 Approved by Advisor: Allan Life Reader: Laurie Langbauer Reader: Tom Reinert Reader: Beverly Taylor Reader: Tim Carter © 2009 Marc Napolitano ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Marc Napolitano: “Reviewing the Situation”: Oliver! and the Musical Afterlife of Dickens’s Novels (Under the direction of Allan Life) This project presents an analysis of various musical adaptations of the works of Charles Dickens. Transforming novels into musicals usually entails significant complications due to the divergent narrative techniques employed by novelists and composers or librettists. In spite of these difficulties, Dickens’s novels have continually been utilized as sources for stage and film musicals. This dissertation initially explores the elements of the author’s novels which render his works more suitable sources for musicalization than the texts of virtually any other canonical novelist. Subsequently, the project examines some of the larger and more complex issues associated with the adaptation of Dickens’s works into musicals, specifically, the question of preserving the overt Englishness of one of the most conspicuously British authors in literary history while simultaneously incorporating him into a genre that is closely connected with the techniques, talents, and tendencies of the American stage. A comprehensive overview of Lionel Bart’s Oliver! (1960), the most influential Dickensian musical of all time, serves to introduce the predominant theoretical concerns regarding the modification of Dickens’s texts for the musical stage and screen. -

From April 2018, the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (Oxford DNB) offers biographies of 60,536 men and women who have shaped the British past, contained in 62,786 articles. 11,496 biographies include a portrait image of the subject—researched in partnership with the National Portrait Gallery, London. Introduction to the update by David Cannadine Welcome to the thirty-ninth update of the Oxford DNB which adds biographies of twenty- seven individuals who were active from the 1540s until the late twentieth century, as well as seven reference group entries ranging from 1604 to 1951. In future, and in addition to the regular annual updates of entries on the recently- deceased, we will be publishing monthly updates, including clusters or sets of related subjects exploring different themes over the periods and territories represented in the Dictionary. This first monthly update of historical lives illustrates both the diversity and range of the Dictionary’s coverage, several of which enhance our knowledge of the Jewish community in Britain. Naphtali Franks (1715-1796), born in the New York and the grandson of the founder of the Great Synagogue of London, belonged a family whose interests embraced the transatlantic world. He was sent to London aged fifteen, and the survival of correspondence from his mother in America documents the family’s cultural interests. One of the hosts of concerts given by the young W. A. Mozart in London in 1764, he also pursued botanical collecting interests, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1764, the first Ashkenazi Jew to be thus recognized. -

Original artist: Harry Secombe The song " If I Ruled the World " was originally from the 1963 West End musical Pickwick (based on Charles Dickens' “The Pickwick Papers”), where the song is sung by the character “Samuel Pickwick”, when he is mistaken for an election candidate and called on by the crowd to give his manifesto. The song was a U.K. chart hit in 1963 for Sir Harry Secombe and has been performed by many other singers, notably Tony Bennett (who had a U.S. chart hit with it in 1965), James Brown, and Stevie Wonder. With the help of Doug Bennett, who provided the muisc for this release (see below) we managed to give this track an orchestral sound reminiscent of the way that it would have originally been performed. To make it “Square-Dance-able” we had to speed it up a little, so it becomes a “ballad” with a “faster feel”; somewhat unusual but – in the final analysis – quite effective. The sentiment of the song is quite beautiful and the track builds to a terrific crescendo that should make it a “crowd pleasing - showtune”!
