On top of that, he is the Co-author of book “Gestão Estratégica - Indicadores de desempenho” (Strategic Management – Performance Indicators) part of the Maintenance collection. Besides that, he is grand official of the order of transport merit. PROFILE Metro Rio The year of 2013 marked the beginning of operations of 19 new trains and the improvement of operations with the reduction of the train time gaps. We also had an important role in the special Rio de Janeiro mobility operations of during two major events: the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and the World Youth Day (WYD). In 2013, MetrôRio reopened General Osório station and moved forward with the construction of Uruguai station. In addition, the Concessionaire had an important achievement: ISO 9001. Reopening of General Osório Station The reopening of General Osório station, before the estimated time, reconnected Ipanema to the subway system, offering better mobility to locals and tourists during the important events in our city like New Year’s Eve and Carnival. On its way to operational excellence, MetrôRIo has kicked-off 2014 with a collection of challenges, victories and achievements. The Concessionaire works hard to produce a new concept of mobility in Rio de Janeiro - going through a big cycle of transformations because of the major events the city will host in the next years. Operations for big events In order to support major events in our city, MetrôRio has operated with a high level of reliability. During the World Youth Day, more than 3.7 million pilgrims used the subway. At the request of the Government, Concessionaire employees planned, in record time, an operation for the Pope’s Final Mass and Blessing, which was transferred from Guaratiba to Copacabana. The system worked at full capacity- 500 passengers boarding per minute in its three stations in the neighborhood (Copacabana). MetrôRio served a crowd equivalent to four “New Year’s Eve” events in a row, with the caveat that for the Final Mass and Blessing it was not possible to sell cards beforehand. This was an unprecedented challenge for the company technicians, a challenge accepted that was fully overcome. In a recent survey conducted by the Ministry of Tourism, 87% of the tourists who came to World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro said they were satisfied with MetrôRio, which was elected the most reliable public service by the pilgrims - despite the fact that the service was interrupted for two hours due to technical problems from a third party service provider company. During the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, more than 50% of the public who attended the games in Maracanã used the subway serving after the games, in an average of 50 minutes, all the fans boarding Maracanã, São Cristóvão and São Francisco Xavier stations. Inauguration of Uruguai Station In March 2014 Uruguai station was inaugurated. It’s the 36th station of MetrôRio and 4th in Tijuca. With five points of access (one at Dona Delfina St., two at Itacuruçá St. and two at Conde de Bonfim St.), the station has 300 meters of platforms, over 7.000 square meters of constructed buildings and 2,9km railways. The new station added over 1,1km of railways to Line 1. R$250 million where invested in Uruguai station. For its construction, an already excavated path known as “Rabicho da Tijuca” was used. Fifa’s World Cup was another important event that took place in 2014. In the seven days of games on Maracanã, MetrôRio transported 686,200 fans, over 70% of the people who watched the games. 2014 Fifa’s World Cup Operation MetrôRio built a special operation to attend the fans and tourists in the city during Fifa’s World Cup in 2014.

The findings suggest that some BRT design features – such as center lane configurations, left turn prohibitions, and signalized mid-block pedestrian crossings with refuge islands – can significantly improve safety on the corridors where BRTs operate. However, there is still a gap in knowledge about how the different safety features might impact the operational performance of the BRT.

  • Africa 2016 Latin America 2016 Latin America 2015-2016
In 2016 a large catch-up* in infrastructure investments is being confirmed by several Latin American countries, driven by the knowledge that economic growth relies heavily on quality infrastructure. The transport sector is going to firmly benefit from the expected increase in public and private funds. The continent being one of the most urbanized regions in the world, a large focus goes into urban rail projects: Mexico, Guatemala, Paraguay, Colombia, Chile, Brazil… are planning new projects for metro, light rail, high speed rail, monorail and passenger trains. One country is clearly taking the lead: Argentina. Besides boosting its investment climate and PPP laws, Argentina made public the ambitious 8-year 14.187 m USD investment in Buenos Aires` commuter network. Related key projects are the city`s RER and tunneling of the Sarmiento line. The Latin America Passenger Rail Expansion Summit will bring together local and international stakeholders, government officials, operators, developers, architects, consultants and equipment plus solution providers to discuss the current rail sector. *300.000 m USD is what Latam should be investing annually, versus the 150.000 m USD spent annually on infrastructure in the previous 20 years. http://latinamerica.railexpansionsummit.com OUTLOOK SOME OF THE TO BE INVITED DELEGATES Argentina foresees 14187 m USD ANPTrilhos INCOFER, Costa Rica Ministerio de Transporte y Comunicaciones, Peru 14187 investment in AFE Uruguay VLT Carioca Consortium Directorio de Transporte Público Metropolitano, Chile suburban network. ABSTRACT By analyzing the performance of the BNDES’ financing in the urban passenger transport sector over the last three decades, we are able to state that, even though progress has been expressive in several aspects and the Bank’s participation in such progress is recognized, gaps remain colossal.

  • The Urban Rail Development Handbook
DEVELOPMENT THE “ The Urban Rail Development Handbook offers both planners and political decision makers a comprehensive view of one of the largest, if not the largest, investment a city can undertake: an urban rail system. The handbook properly recognizes that urban rail is only one part of a hierarchically integrated transport system, and it provides practical guidance on how urban rail projects can be implemented and operated RAIL URBAN THE URBAN RAIL in a multimodal way that maximizes benefits far beyond mobility. The handbook is a must-read for any person involved in the planning and decision making for an urban rail line.” —Arturo Ardila-Gómez, Global Lead, Urban Mobility and Lead Transport Economist, World Bank DEVELOPMENT “ The Urban Rail Development Handbook tackles the social and technical challenges of planning, designing, financing, procuring, constructing, and operating rail projects in urban areas. It is a great complement HANDBOOK to more technical publications on rail technology, infrastructure, and project delivery. This handbook provides practical advice for delivering urban megaprojects, taking account of their social, institutional, and economic context.” —Martha Lawrence, Lead, Railway Community of Practice and Senior Railway Specialist, World Bank HANDBOOK “ Among the many options a city can consider to improve access to opportunities and mobility, urban rail stands out by its potential impact, as well as its high cost. Getting it right is a complex and multifaceted challenge that this handbook addresses beautifully through an in-depth and practical sharing of hard lessons learned in planning, implementing, and operating such urban rail lines, while ensuring their transformational role for urban development.” —Gerald Ollivier, Lead, Transit-Oriented Development Community of Practice, World Bank “ Public transport, as the backbone of mobility in cities, supports more inclusive communities, economic development, higher standards of living and health, and active lifestyles of inhabitants, while improving air quality and liveability.
