The trend of purchasing medicine online is increasing and so is the number of e-pharmacy start-ups. E- Pharmacies are recent entrants in the Indian e-commerce industry and receiving attention from the government as well as global investors from the past three years. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India has published draft rules on 28th August 2018, with the heading “Sale of drugs by e-pharmacy” to bring e-pharmacies within the scope of Drug and Cosmetics Rules, 1945 by making amendments in it which currently does not distinguish between online and brick and mortar pharmacies. It aims to regulate online sale of quality medicines pan India through e-pharmacies registered under Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), India’s apex drug regulator and central licensing authority, where all records are maintained as per rules laid down. The confidentiality of patient details have to be maintained and cannot be disclosed to anyone one under any circumstances other than the central or state government as the case may be. Introduction. The federal government has failed to adequately respond to the ever growing need for regulation of Internet commerce. This failure is no more apparent than in the online prescription industry. Online pharmacies provide Americans- who are struggling to keep up with the rise of prescription drug costs- an alternative that is cost effective, convenient, and that provides more privacy than the traditional brick and mortar pharmacies. Unfortunately, there has been a consistent rise of illegitimate online pharmacies whose emergence and regulation are inadequately handled by the current patchwork of state and federal legislation. In many instances, these pharmacies provide pharmaceuticals to consumers without the traditional face-to face physical examination by a physician; others prescribe deadly drugs by only requiring that the consumer fill out an effortless questionnaire. The commercial feasibility of an online pharmacy and acceptability of the consumers has been attempted to be derived in this study with help of financial results and other indices of its overall performance. The results and analyses indicate a potential steep growth in business through great success stories of Drugstore.com. And at the same time, the regulatory and other strong challenges are still found to be threatening. The findings show a pathway towards a whole new revolutionary concept of a pure internet based online drugstore. Buying medications online are no exception. Besides its benefits, several patient safety risks are linked to the purchase of medicines outside the traditional supply chain. Although thousands of internet pharmacies are accessible on the web, the actual size of the market is unknown. Currently, there is limited data available on the use of internet pharmacies, the number, and attitude of people obtaining medications and other health products from the internet. Objective: This study aims to gather information on the frequency and attitudes of patients purchasing medications online in a nationally representative sample of outpatients. Attitudes towards main supply chain channels, perceived benefits, and disadvantages of influencing online medication purchase are evaluated. Methods: A cross-sectional explorative study using a personally administered survey was conducted in a representative sample of Hungarian outpatients in 2018. Results: A total of 1055 outpatients completed the survey (response rate 77.23%).
