Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) • UNIMAS first Massive Open Online Course offers an integration of online, hybrid and collaborative learning in achieving the learning goals on topics related to ICT Competency Open Course Ware (OCW) • UNIMAS academicians make available their course notes, lecture notes, exams and various course resources for free to anyone who has internet access. Smart Research @ iRIS • The Integrated Research Information System (iRIS) provides us the capability to embed Quick Response (QR) codes in research products and posters during exposition as well providing QR for evaluation of projects. Additionally, our Smart Research @ iRIS provides a glimpse for our researchers of their status as principal investigators, their indexed publications, the number and total amount of their grants as well as any intellectual properties granted. Not only that, we are able to conduct big data analytics through this platform by examining our faculties’ and institutes’ data. From research operation, iRIS delivers an online solution for users such as academicians and support staff, to compile data for job promotion, job appraisal, research assistance, commercialisation and consultancy. eLEAP (e-Learning Enrichment and Advancement Platform) • UNIMAS is focusing on the blended learning concept/approach in which academic staff is encouraged to design teaching and learning process that integrates face-to-face learning and online learning through the official Learning Management System (LMS) known as eLEAP (e-Learning Enrichment and Advancement Platform). Besides presenting lecture in class, academics can share the course materials such as notes, readings, assignments, and they can also enhance their students’ learning experience by conducting various types of interactive and collaborative learning activities via eLEAP. Thus, the dilemma confronted by the small and medium enterprises will affect both financial and non-financial business performance. A study on the small and medium enterprises topic is not new but necessary in order to observe the effect of the considerable issues in business environment. Therefore, this study is conducted to investigate the dilemmas that affect the business performance among small and medium enterprises in service sector. Three dimensions have been proposed, which are transportation facilities, financial strength, and labor force skills. A total of 159 sets of questionnaires were completed by the firms’ representative. The findings from this study discovered that transportation facilities, financial strength, and labor force skills have a significant and positive relationship with business performance. The results present a better understanding of transportation facilities, financial strength, and labor force skills issues from small and medium enterprises in Kuching city, which is located in Borneo Island. A survey of 200 respondents in the Song district was conducted. To determine the objective eth- nolinguistic vitality, a structural analysis was performed on their sociolinguistic backgrounds. The results show the Iban language dominates in family, friend- ship, transactions, religious, employment, and education domains. The language use patterns show functional differentiation into the Iban language as the “low language” and Malay as the “high language”. The respondents have positive at- titudes towards the Iban language. The dimensions of language attitudes that are strongly positive are use of the Iban language, Iban identity, and intergenera- tional transmission of the Iban language. The marginally positive dimensions are instrumental use of the Iban language, social status of Iban speakers, and prestige value of the Iban language. Inferential statistical tests show that language atti- tudes are influenced by education level. However, language attitudes and useof the Iban language are not significantly correlated. By viewing language use and attitudes from the perspective of ethnolinguistic vitality, this study has revealed that a numerically dominant group assumed to be safe from language shift has only medium vitality, based on both objective and subjective evaluation.

Regina Garai Abdullah A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2016 School of Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand i Abstract To what degree does accessibility to markets correlate with levels of development? This is an important question for those living in remote, underdeveloped parts of Southeast Asia during the final phases of de-agrarianisation. My study recounts the experience of rural-based Iban households living in the Baleh river basin of the Kapit District (population of 54,200) within a day or less travel by river to the small market town of Kapit (with a population of 18,000). With no connecting roads to the rest of Sarawak and reliant almost entirely on river transport, the local economy remains underdeveloped and is losing population. My field work among 20 villages in three accessibility zones of the Baleh river basin was undertaken over the three month period of May-July 2014. Structured interviews were conducted with 20 village headmen (tuai rumah), 82 heads of household, and 82 individuals within the households. Data was also systematically collected on 153 other individuals, including both residents and non-resident members of these bilik-families. My conceptual framework draws on von Thünen’s model of agricultural land use in order to generate expectations about the possible effects of market accessibility. While the sale of vegetables and other commodities accords with expected patterns, most rural households are in fact dependent on other, largely non-agricultural sources of income.

    United Nation Public Service Award Nominee Miri Hospital, Sarawak, Malaysia Category 1: Reaching the poorest and most vulnerable through inclusive services and partnerships; I am honoured to write this letter of reference for Miri Hospital’s submission for the United Nation’s Public Service Award in “Category 1: Reaching the poorest and most vulnerable through inclusive services and partnerships”. While Malaysia has a very good health care delivery system that has virtually achieved Universal Health Coverage in Peninsular Malaysia, the state of Sarawak on Borneo Island, is still struggling to achieve Universal Health Coverage, especially to those inhabitants who live in the remote and rugged interior areas of the State. Those inhabitants (e.g., the semi- nomadic Penan tribes) include the poorest and most vulnerable sections of the population. They live in small groups either in settlements or villages making it uneconomical to provide fixed health care facilities such as clinics. So, they are covered by mobile health care teams that travel along logging roads or by the Flying Doctor services. Such mobile teams are constrained by time and by the weather; thus, they can provide only the most basic of health services such as childhood immunisation and basic antenatal and postnatal care. Provision of healthcare in such remote areas of Sarawak has always been a challenge due to poor accessibility and high operational cost. Most of the rural areas are served by a network of primary care clinics under the public health program of Sarawak Health Department whereas specialised medical care is available in urban hospitals.

Development of multiple antibiotic resistant bacteria has overtaken new drug development and threatened the patients with untreatable infections. This study was conducted to isolate and characterize the antibiotic resistant bacteria from swiftlet farm houses located in various places including Kota Samarahan, Semarang, Saratok, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Sepinang, Maludam, Miri, and Kuching in Sarawak, Malaysia. Five feces samples were collected randomly from each site. One gram of the feces sample was diluted in 9 mL of 0.85% normal saline solution. The diluted sample was plated on Trypticase Soy agar plates and incubated at 37±1 °C for 24 h. A total of 500 bacteria isolates were then identified using 16S rRNA analysis method. Disc diffusion method was then used to confirm the resistant phenotypes of these isolates. The results showed that the means of the bacterial colony count were significantly -1 different (p<0.05) from one another, with the highest log10 CFU g (9.22±0.72) found in Kota Samarahan and the -1 lowest log10 CFU g (6.03±0.62) in Betong.
