Yvr Connects YVR CONNECTS 2015 SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2 | VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT Vancouver Airport Authority is the community-based, not-for-profit organization that manages Vancouver International Airport (YVR). We have no shareholders and we reinvest all profits back into airport operations and development. We are committed to creating an airport that British Columbia can be proud of: a premier global gateway, local economic generator and community contributor. Each year, Vancouver Airport Authority produces an annual report to share our financial results as well as provide an update on our activities. For 2015, we have created a comprehensive Sustainability Report—reflecting our commitment to the four pillars of sustainability: Social, Economic, Environment and Governance. We believe that being a good corporate citizen means transparently sharing our results and factoring sustainability into our organizational decision-making process. To YVR, sustainability encompasses more than just our impact on the environment—it also reflects the positive and negative impacts on the world in which we live from an economic and community perspective. The 2015 YVR Sustainability Report summarizes Vancouver Airport Authority’s activities and business results at Vancouver International Airport in 2015. All of our activities in 2015 stemmed from our Strategic Plan, which sets the fundamental direction of the organization and provides the basis for our comprehensive approach to planning. From improving infrastructure to opening new facilities, 2015’s activities largely fell under one of four supporting objectives: 8 | VANCOUVER AIRPORT AUTHORITY CREATE A CONNECTING HUB BETWEEN ASIA AND THE AMERICAS BE A LEADER IN SUSTAINABILITY DELIVER REMARKABLE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCES BUILD ON OUR STRONG FOUNDATION YVR CONNECTS | 2015 SUSTAINABILITY REPORT | 9 CREATING A CONNECTING HUB IN 2015, WE CONTINUED WORK ON KEY INITIATIVES THAT WILL ENSURE WE REMAIN A WORLD-CLASS, SUSTAINABLE CONNECTING HUB. VISA-FREE INITIATIVES For more than 20 years, YVR has worked with its partners to progressively expand visa-free transit between Asia and the Americas, making new routes commercially viable while contributing to BC’s economy. In 2015, the Government of Canada announced the addition of five Chinese cities—Xiamen, Fuzhou, Chengdu, Shenyang and Harbin—to the list of approved cities under the China Transit Program, which allows Chinese nationals to travel through YVR en route to the US without requiring a Canadian visa. We will continue to work towards expanding this program and other visa-free initiatives in 2016. 10 | VANCOUVER AIRPORT AUTHORITY INTEGRATED MARKETING STRATEGY CARGO In June, YVR introduced a new Integrated YVR works closely with businesses to provide Marketing Strategy that seeks to combine markets with products while identifying the efforts of our Air Service Development, opportunities for growth. HOW TO GET TO THE WILD WEST COAST... TOFINO B.C. Tofino is found on the wild west coast of Vancouver Island. Stand on the beach in Tofino and the next land you would reach, going west, would be Japan. The drive between Victoria and Tofino was recently ranked as one of the top three drives in Canada in the 2004 edition of the Michelin North American Road Atlas. Found at the very end of the Trans-Canada Highway, Tofino and Long Beach Lodge Resort are located 321 kilometres from Victoria, 208 kilometres from Nanaimo, (Vancouver Island’s second largest city), and 130 kilometres west of Port Alberni and 42 kilometres north of Ucluelet on Highway 4 (also called the Pacific Rim Highway). Vancouver Island and Tofino are easily accessible by sea, air and land. Driving times are approximate, especially if you stop to view the stunning scenery along the way: Victoria to Tofino = 4.5 hrs Nanaimo to Tofino = 2.5 hrs Port Alberni to Tofino = 1.5 hrs BY SEA BC Ferries Year-round, daily vehicle and passenger ferry service from Mainland BC to Vancouver Island Vancouver (Tsawwassen and Horseshoe Bay) to Victoria (Swartz Bay) or Nanaimo (Departure Bay and Duke Point) In person at their new Vacations Centre located at 1010 Canada Place, Vancouver BC or call 1-888-223-3779 Tel: (250) 386-3431 www.bcferries.bc.ca Victoria Clipper Year-round, daily passenger ferry service between Seattle and Victoria Tel: (206) 448-5000 www.victoriaclipper.com Black Ball Transport Year-round, daily vehicle and passenger ferry service between Victoria and Port Angeles, WA on

  • A Study of Present and Future Interurban Transportation Emissions in British Columbia, Canada, Relative to Its Greenhouse Gas Reduction Targets Act of 2007
OFF TRACK TO 2050?: A STUDY OF PRESENT AND FUTURE INTERURBAN TRANSPORTATION EMISSIONS IN BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA, RELATIVE TO ITS GREENHOUSE GAS REDUCTION TARGETS ACT OF 2007 by Moritz Alexander Schare B.A., University of Northern British Columbia, 2008 M.A., University of Northern British Columbia, 2012 THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN BRITISH COLUMBIA FEBRUARY 2016 © Moritz Alexander Schare, 2016 originating from sources in a defined category, such as transportation, in a given geographical area (for example, global or national or local) over a given time span (the typical time frame is one year). An inventory usually also contains data to calculate the emissions. In addition, an inventory can include other emissions-related information or calculations such as emission factors (the amount of the pollutant emitted per unit activity). The objective of the research in this dissertation was to develop an emissions inventory for the transportation sector in British Columbia (BC) that could be used to answer various policy-related questions about BC's present-day and future transportation emissions. There are two distinct types of transportation emissions inventories: top-down and bottom-up. Top-down inventories are based on large-scale, overarching ('top level') data, such as total fuel sales for a given jurisdiction, that are used to calculate emissions which are then allocated to the lower levels in some manner within the jurisdiction. Bottom-up inventories work in the opposite direction, so to speak. They start with small-scale, on-the- ground (' bottom level ' ) data, such as fuel sales at each sales outlet within a jurisdiction, that are used to calculate emissions which are then summed up in some manner for the jurisdiction.
