By Appointments, over, a Japanese aircraft spotted the Yorktown task force. The recon plane reported five cruisers and five destroyers - they failed to spot the Yorktown. But at 8:20, another plane reported it looked like a carrier was bringing up the rear. Nagumo was floored. All his fighters were in the air beating off the attacks from Midway and almost all his torpedo planes had been switched to bombs. Nagumo ordered the torpedoes put back on the planes. In the process, the Japanese made a fatal mistake...they left the bombs on the deck. When the American recon plane first spotted the carriers shortly after dawn, Spruance faced a tough decision. He figured in three hours he would be within 100 miles of the Japanese - a perfect spot to launch an attack. But, being seriously out numbered, he feared he might lose his biggest advantage during that time - surprise. At 7:02 a.m. and 170 miles away, he risked all his planes. He launched 67 dive bombers, 29 torpedo planes and 20 fighters off the two carriers. About two hours later, Task Force-17 sent 12 torpedo bombers, 17 dive bombers and six fighters off the Yorktown. The first group of 35 dive bombers and 10 fighters from the Hornet never found the Japanese and turned toward Midway. The second group of torpedo bombers also found nothing, but turned out to sea and found the carriers. But, their fighter escort had turned toward Midway with the first group, and all the planes were shot down during the attack. Of almost 200 American planes, only 54 remained. The American aircraft were seriously outnumbered and no match for the Japanese aircraft. At 10:24 a.m., American luck suddenly changed. Just as the Japanese were getting ready to strike the American fleet, a group of dive bombers began their dive from high above the carriers. All the Zeros were down low fighting off the torpedo bombers and never saw them. This time the American planes didn't miss. They hit the planes on the carrier Akagi and set off the bombs which had been carelessly set aside. The carriers Kaga and Soryu were also severely damaged. Rhsortls Around world in song, dance

By Sgt. Kevin Doll

The students and faculty of Mokapu Elementary School here traveled around the world in song and dance May 27 during their annual May Day festival. The May Day Court included students Jeremy Nichols as the Kahuna, Rose Chargualaf as the Royal Queen and eight princesses representing the Hawaiian Islands. The princesses had escorts, .gift-bearers and kahili bearers. After the entrance of the May Day Court onto the playground, the kindergarteners took centerstage to sing E Kuu Tutu, a love song to grandmothers. Queen Rose, dressed in a beautiful white gown, entertained the crowd next with her hula dance. The first graders then performed E Na Keiki 0 Ka Aina, or "Children of the Land," a Hawaiian exercise. The fourth graders also gave a Hawaiian performance called "Beautiful World," or Ke Nani Ao Nei. The Mokapu third graders gave a Samoan dance rendition of Ole Ipu Popo, complete with coconut shells used as percussion hand instruments. In a display of dexterity and skill, the fifth graders gave a demonstration of Filipino tinikling, the Philippine version of jumping rope. As two students maneuvered two long bamboo poles together and apart on the ground, two other students jumped in and out of the space between the poles. The sixth graders gave their stylized version of the African folk dance Pata Pat" complete with a limbo. svin Doll The last event was the English version of the European Clockwise from top left.
