MOVING TO MUSIC

MOVING TO MUSIC: You like teaching rhythmic activities but you need new ideas. You dread teaching rhythmic activities because you just think it is dance with the same music. PAGE 4 GAMES WITH MUSIC

SQUIRRELS and TREES (Take off on Musical Chairs) Use any fast paced music. (Grades Prek to 3rd) Have 2 students make a tree by joining their hands and raising the up (make sure there is at least one less number of trees then there are squirrels, can even have 3 less trees). Another group of students can perform a locomotor skill (I like plain ole running) around a designated area (4 cones if you like), while the music is playing. When the music stops the squirrels try to find and get into an unoccupied tree (once a squirrel enters a tree the tree puts their arms down – ONE squirrel per tree). I have the same squirrels go again then change squirrels. Can use one’s, two’s, and three’s. That is, the one’s are squirrels while the 2’s and 3’s are trees, etc.

CHRISTMAS CORNERS (or you can use any season or holiday theme) (Grades PreK to 2nd)

Using 4 cones for the students to run around (or another locomotor skill) while the music is playing. Place a picture of the theme at EACH cone. For example, Christmas tree, Bells, Santa, etc. and the teacher holds an identical picture. When the music stops the students go to the CORNER OF THEIR CHOICE and stops. (You can do this with partners where they would have to decide together which corner to go to). Then you or a student chooses one of the pictures (holding the pictures face down) the teacher has. If it matches the corner they are standing at THEY WIN. REPEAT and use your imagination.

WHO LET THE DOGS OUT CD Title – “More” Kids Fun Games, Songs, and Sing- A-Longs. (DJ’s Choice Turn Up The Music, Inc.) (Grades K to 3rd)

Have 5 students be the DOG CATCHERS (Its). The rest of the class are the dogs. NO BASE. The dogs have something like flag football flags one on each side at the hips tucked in their waistband or pocket AS A TAIL. (NO HIDING THE TAILS). Dogs start on one side of the gym and dog catchers on the other side. When the music starts the dog catchers try to pull a tail from the dogs and they bring the tail to the teacher and go back for another tail (I make them bring one at a time – more running). When the music stops (about one minute or so) the teacher counts how many tails the dog catchers collected. The next group of dog catchers try to get more tails then the first group (and so on – can have 6 groups of dog catchers). The group that catches the most tails is the winner. FOR THE DOGS if they loose one tail they keep going. If they loose both tails I have a pile of tails they go to get new tails. Therefore, no one is out of the game and everyone keeps moving.
