Begun in England 150 years ago, it took more than 60 years to complete, and when it was finally finished in 1928, the British prime minister heralded it as a ‘national treasure’. It maintained this image throughout the twentieth century, and in 2006 the English public voted it an ‘Icon of England’, alongside Marmite, Buckingham Palace, and the bowler hat. But this book shows that the dictionary is not as ‘British’ as we all thought. The linguist and lexicographer, Sarah Ogilvie, combines her insider knowledge and experience with impeccable research to show that the OED is in fact an international product in both its content and its making. She examines the policies and practices of the various editors, applies qualitative and quantitative analysis, and finds new OED archival materials in the form of letters, reports, and proofs. She demonstrates that the OED,in its use of readers from all over the world and its coverage of World English, is in fact a global text. sarah ogilvie is Director of the Australian National Dictionary Centre, Reader in Linguistics at the Australian National University, and Chief Editor of Oxford Dictionaries, Australia.

A NOTE ON THE USE OF DICTIONARIES Antonin Scalia & Bryan A. Garner† “When [lawyers and judges] look up a word in a dictionary – and they often do – they are as likely as not to select a poor dictionary.” – Max Radin* ORD MACMILLAN WAS HARDLY OVERSTATING the case in 1938 when he said that “one of the chief functions of our courts is to act as an animated and authoritative diction- ary.”1 The reason is that with legal interpretation, inevita- bly “[t]he words used by one set of persons have to be interpreted L 2 by another set of persons.” So it is understandable that so-called judicial dictionaries have been assembled over the years – some- times vast compilations of judicial pronouncements about what a given word or phrase means. • Online English Dictionaries: Friend Or Foe?
Online English Dictionaries: Friend or Foe? Gao Yongwei Keywords: online dictionary, e-lexicography, English-Chinese lexicography. Abstract The emergence of online English dictionaries in the past two decades has not only changed the lookup habit of many people and but also influenced the way dictionaries are compiled and presented. The traditional role played by paper dictionaries has been challenged, as witness the sharp decrease of the sales of the so-called “dead-tree” dictionaries and the steady diminishing in their readership. In consequence, many paper dictionaries have been gathering dust on bookshelves in bookstores, libraries or private studies. The ever-increasing popularity of online dictionaries has even made some alarmists suggest the possible demise of paper dictionaries. However, the future of dictionary-making and that of bilingual lexicography in particular is not as dismal as what people usually think. The lexicographical information presented in online dictionaries may prove to be a bonanza for bilingual lexicographers. This paper attempts to research into the major online English dictionaries that are available today, and their advantages and disadvantages will also be discussed. The scene of online English-Chinese dictionaries will also be investigated, and opportunities presented to English-Chinese dictionary-makers in the digital era will be explored. According to most current English reference books, a dictionary is usually defined as “a book that gives a list of words in alphabetical order and explains what they mean”. However, technological advances have already redefined what a dictionary is. Many dictionaries that are being used today are no longer “books” in the traditional sense of the word as they can be found in electronic devices (e.g.

A dictionary be – monolingual, bilingual or bilingualised- is an effective teaching tool, but it is often neglected, while it should always be consulted and included in every EFL syllabus or in any EFL teaching/learning situation. It should constantly be referred to by teachers to enhance their teaching strategies and learners should resort to it to develop linguistic skills. Thus a dictionary can be seen as a tool that can help in the management of language education. It can be effectively used to create a comprehensive pedagogical environment; not only targeting the look–up for the meaning of words, but also featuring other important aspects of language skills which a good dictionary can-simultaneously- provide to teachers and learners as well. Index Terms—lexicography, monolingual, bilingualised dictionaries, pedagogical environment. Language management I. OVERVIEW Since their beginning in the 18th century, English dictionaries have been viewed as the ultimate authority on English language as in The Dictionary by Dr.

  • Anatomy of the Dictionary
THE MEANING OF DICTIONARIES March 2007 - July 2007 CASE 1 INTRODUCTION Dictionaries traditionally defined meaning and functioned as unquestioned sources of authority. Considered neutral and unbiased, they nonetheless served important political purposes, creating a sense of nationhood through a shared language. But over time, the nature and function of the dictionary has changed dramatically. A number of factors influenced the development of the dictionary, among them changes in language itself, the expansion of knowledge, nationalism, and colonialism. Today, current technologies allow a level of interaction between users and dictionaries that poses a basic challenge to their authoritative role. This exhibition traces the history of the English language dictionary and looks at how – and what – dictionaries mean at various historical and cultural junctures. Far from being free of personality or politics, the “meaning” of a dictionary is shaped by the historical, cultural, social, economic, and human elements that contributed to its production. The English language dictionary emerged from several earlier types of reference works, including bilingual and polyglot dictionaries, which give the meaning of words from one language or several in another; and encyclopedias, compilations of information on all or a particular branch of knowledge. Now recognized as quite distinct, early dictionaries and encyclopedias shared many characteristics; and as late as the 18th century the two words were used interchangeably. John Harris’s Lexicon Technicum, or, an Universal English Dictionary of Arts and Sciences (1704) identifies itself as a dictionary by its title, but to 21st-century eyes appears to be more like an encyclopedia. Both were alphabetical arrangements of words or concepts and contained an explanation of their meaning, sometimes with pictorial illustration.

    > The Genre of the Etymological Dictionary anatoly liberman 1 Etymological dictionaries among other comprehensive dictionaries Etymological dictionaries are stepchildren of lexicography. In surveys, at best a few pages are devoted to them. Even lists of the etymological dictionaries of English, German, Dutch, and the Scandinavian languages, that is, of languages having a strong tradition of producing such reference works, were impossible to find until I compiled and published them (Liberman 1998; 1999; 2005; the Dutch list still awaits publication). But years after I began this work I keep running into old, not necessarily worthless, works that fell between the cracks and wonder how many more I have missed (cf. the postscript to my 1999 paper added in proof and Liberman 2009b). One does not have to look far for the reason complicating this search. The common habit of depending on the latest products, which, allegedly, contain more pieces of distilled wisdom than their predecessors, severed our ties with the past, and few experts consult the first editions of Kluge (1883, etc.) or any of the four editions of Wedgwood (1859-1865, etc.), let alone dictionaries by less distinguished authors. As a result, references to them are rare. Theory of lexicography and excellent instructions to lexicographers exist (the market seems to be always ready for new encyclopedias and voluminous ‘handbooks’), but no one except Yakov Malkiel (1975) has taken the trouble to analyze the practice of etymological lexicography or look at the multitude of etymological dictionaries written in the post-medieval period. Those who know his book may agree that despite its scope it is not a fully satisfactory guide to the subject, partly because of Malkiel’s penchant for baroque style and partly because he was preeminently an expert in Romance linguistics, which made his opinions about Germanic and Slavic lexicography less valuable.
