There are two story lines: 1) The struggles of life in the theatre as performers chase their dreams of stardom, and 2) the universal story of a mother/daughter relationship. At the top of the show we meet Mama Rose. Rose is a domineering, brash stage-mother who dreams of fame and stardom for her daughters, Louise and June. Rose devotes her entire being to building their stage careers June, the younger daughter, is an extroverted, talented child star. The older daughter, Louise, is shy. Their kiddie Vaudeville act has one song, "Let Me Entertain You," that they sing over and over and over again, with June always as the center- piece and Louise in the background. The girls grow up and continue to perform the same act. June becomes tired of her mother’s influence and the endless touring. She elopes with one of the backup dancers. Rose is deeply hurt, but determinedly vows that she will now make Louise a star. Unfortunately, with the rise of radio and movies, the Vaudeville theatre jobs disappear. -

On June 14 and 15, 1982, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing en the proposed designation as an Interior Landmark of the Alvin Theater, first floor interior consisting of the ticket lobby, the entrance lobby, the auditorium, the stage, the staircases leading from the first floor to the balcony floor and all connecting entrance areas; the balcony floor interior consisting of the balcony, the upper part of the auditorium and ceiling; and the fixtures and interior components of these spaces, including but not limited to, wall and ceiling surfaces, doors, stair railings, and attached decorative elements; 244-254 West 52rrl Street, Manhattan, and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No.2). The hearing was continued to October 19, 1982. Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Eighty three witnesses spoke in favor of designation. Two witnesses spoke in opposition to designation. -

ARTHUR LAURENTS b. July 14, 1917 d. May 5, 2011 PLAYWRIGHT/DIRECTOR “Entertainment is dessert. It needs to be balanced by the main course: theater of substance.” Arthur Laurents was a Tony Award-winning playwright, director and screenwriter. He In 1984, he won a wrote the scripts for “West Side Story,” “Gypsy” and “La Cage Aux Folles.” Tony for Best Direction Born Arthur Levine, Laurents grew up in Brooklyn, New York. Because of anti-Semitism, of a Musical for he changed his last name to the less Jewish-sounding Laurents. “La Cage Aux Folles.” After graduating from Cornell University, Laurents took a class in radio writing and produced “Now Playing Tomorrow,” a comedic fantasy broadcast on CBS Radio. He was drafted into the Army in World War II, but never saw combat. He wrote training films and dramatized radio shows for the Armed Forces. Laurents started his Broadway career with “Home of the Brave” (1945), which was adapted into a film. He moved to Hollywood to pursue screenwriting. He adapted the play “Rope’s End” into a movie, but his Hollywood career was cut short when he was blacklisted for Communist sympathies. Subsequently, he returned to New York City and resumed writing for theater and film. Laurents wrote 12 plays and musicals, including “The Bird Cage” (1950), “The Time of the Cuckoo” (1952) and “A Clearing in the Woods” (1957). He wrote screenplays for “Anastasia” (1956), “The Way We Were” (1973) and “The Turning Point” (1977). He shared Tony nominations for Best Musical for “West Side Story” and “Gypsy.” In 1968, the Tony for Best Musical went to “Hallelujah, Baby!,” for which Laurents wrote the script.
