Tijdschrift voor Entomologie 160 (2017) 89–138 An initial survey of aquatic and semi-aquatic Heteroptera (Insecta) from the Cardamom Mountains and adjacent uplands of southwestern Cambodia, with descriptions of four new species Dan A. Polhemus Previous collections of aquatic Heteroptera from Cambodia have been limited, and the biota of the country has remained essentially undocumented until the past several years. Recent surveys of aquatic Heteroptera in the Cardamom Mountains and adjacent Kirirom and Bokor plateaus of southwestern Cambodia, coupled with previous literature records, demonstrate that 11 families, 35 genera, and 68 species of water bugs occur in this area. These collections include 13 genus records and 37 species records newly listed for the country of Cambodia. The following four new species are described based on these recent surveys: Amemboa cambodiana n. sp. (Gerridae); Microvelia penglyi n. sp., Microvelia setifera n. sp. and Microvelia bokor n. sp. (all Veliidae). Based on an updated checklist provided herein, the aquatic Heteroptera biota of Cambodia as currently known consists of 78 species, and has an endemism rate of 7.7%, although these numbers should be considered provisional pending further sampling. Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. Species from those families are the largest of all nepomorphans and are considered to be top predators in aquatic ecosystems. A characteristic feature of the group is the existence of short antennae concealed in grooves behind the eyes, which is an adaptation to the water habitat. The antennae bear many types of sensillar structures, which receive signals from the environment. Among such structures, mechanosensilla were of the greatest diversity. The antennal sensilla of species from both families were examined under the scanning electron microscope. 11 essential morphological types of sensilla were distinguished, including 5 new mechanosensilla types (sensilla paddle-like, cone-like, squamiformia, brush-like and club-like). Basal types of mechanosensilla such as trichodea, chaetica, basiconica (subtype 1) and campaniformia occur in Nepoidea and other Heteroptera. In some representatives of both families, sensilla paddle-like and sensilla basiconica type 1 were observed. Moreover, sensilla chaetica and cone-like were found in some species of Belostomatidae, whereas in Nepidae sensilla squamiformia, brush-like and club-like were observed. Apart from mechanosensilla, one type of thermo- hygrosensilla (ampullacea) and two diferent shaped olfactory sensilla basiconica (subtypes 2, 3) and coeloconica (subtypes 1, 2, 3) were found. -

Diplonychus rusticus Fabricius (Hemiptera, Belostomatidae) is one of the common aquatic insects inhabiting the freshwater habitats of Assam, India. An experimental approach has been used to study the predatory efficiency and feeding behavior of this aquatic bug in relation to individual density of 7 prey individuals of different size, namely fish species- Catla catla and Puntius sp., mosquito larvae- Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera), Chironomus larvae- Tendipes sp. (Diptera), mayfly- Baetis sp. (Ephemeroptera), small aquatic beetle- Amhiops pedestris Sharp (Coleoptera) and Damsel fly nymph- Ischnura sp.(Odonata) by separate feeding in aquaria in laboratory condition. The mean rank of consumption is calculated against each of the prey organism. Of the small size class the most consumed taxa is recorded as living spawn of Catla catla followed by the Baetis sp. Within the medium size class the most used taxa is the living forms of mosquito larvae which is closely followed by the living spawn of Catla catla. The results of the present laboratory experiments indicate the possible use of the aquatic bug as a biological control agent of mosquito vector under agro-climatic conditions of Assam, India. On the other hand, it shows significant negative role in the nurseries and rearing ponds of fish aquaculture system. Keywords: Aquatic, Feeding, Predator, Biological control 1. -
Global Trends in the Description of Aquatic and Semiaquatic Heteroptera Species, 1758–2004
Global trends in the description of aquatic and semiaquatic Heteroptera species, 1758–2004 John T. Polhemus & Dan A. Polhemus Species description trends for the 4782 species of aquatic and semiaquatic Heteroptera (Gerromorpha, Nepomorpha, and Leptopodomorpha) named during the 246 year interval from 1758 through 2004 are analyzed in regard to number of species descriptions per year and cumulative number of species. These data are graphed both on a world basis, and for seven major zoogeographic regions (Palearctic, Nearctic, Neotropical, Afrotropical, Oriental, Australian and Pacific). This analysis reveals that our taxonomic knowledge of aquatic and semiaquatic Heteroptera, as measured by species descriptions, has accumulated at a progressively faster rate over time when assessed on a world basis, albeit in an episodic and uneven fashion, with peaks of high activity interspersed with periods of relatively low output. When examined at the level of individual zoogeographic regions, the accumulation of taxonomic descriptions is seen to be pronouncedly episodic, and contingent upon the productivity of particular regional experts during the courses of their careers, with just ten authors accounting for over 40 percent of all currently accepted species descriptions. Species accumulation curves, based on published descriptions, indicate that description of extant aquatic and semiaquatic Heteroptera species is nearly complete for the Palearctic and Nearctic regions, and well advanced for the Neotropical region. The Oriental and Australian (including New Guinea) regions show continuing sharp upward trends, indicating that these regions are still far from completely documented. The flattening of the description accumulation curves in the Afrotropical and Pacific regions is interpreted to be an artifact produced by a relative paucity of recent taxonomic work in these regions, and thus not truly indicative of well documented biotas in these areas.
