PRZEGLĄD ZACHODNI 2011, No 1 ZbIGNIEw MAZuR Poznań NEUE WACHE (1818-1993) Since 1993 in the Federal Republic of Germany the berlin Neue wache has served as a central memorial commemorating the victims of war and tyranny, that is to say it represents in a synthetic gist the binding German canon of collective memo- ry in the most sensitive area concerning the infamous history of the Third Reich. The interior decor of Neue wache, the sculpture placed inside and the commemorative plaques speak a lot about the official historical policy of the German government. Also the symbolism of the place itself is of significance, and a plaque positioned to the left of the entrance contains information about its history. Indeed, the history of Neue wache was extraordinary, starting as a utility building, though equipped with readable symbolic features, and ending up as a place for a national memorial which has been redesigned three times. Consequently, the process itself created a symbolic palimpsest with some layers completely obliterated and others remaining visible to the eye, and with new layers added which still retain a scent of freshness. The first layer is very strongly connected with the victorious war of “liberation” against Na- poleonic France, which played the role of a myth that laid the foundations for the great power of Prussia and then of the later German Empire. The second layer was a reflection of the glorifying worship of the fallen soldiers which developed after world war I in European countries and also in Germany. The third one was an ex- pression of the historical policy of the communist-run German Democratic Republic which emphasized the victims of class struggle with “militarism” and “fascism”. -

Berlin Program for Advanced German & European Studies Berlin Program Summer Workshop Virtual Germans June 19-20, 2014 Freie Universität Berlin Preliminary Program In her travels through Eastern Europe in the 1990s, the writer Ruth Ellen Gruber noted that non-Jews were embracing, creating, and marketing an idea of Jewishness that had little to do with the Jews who had lived in the region before the Holocaust. Through practices and cultural products, these “virtual Jews” had come in dialog with “their own visions of Jews and Jewish matters, and themselves.” In recent years, the historian Winson Chu has adapted this concept to show the enactment of a “virtually German” culture that serves commercial interests, European reconciliation, and cosmopolitan credentials in Poland today. In 2014, the Berlin Program summer workshop will invite papers that expand upon the idea of “virtual Germans” in a variety of constellations, including Germans and German-speakers who have fashioned new identities for themselves abroad, people living in Germany of diverse backgrounds whose German belonging is contested, as well as constructions of Germanness in the virtual realm of cyberspace and in the classroom. This workshop will pay special attention to the global flow of “Germanness” as well as to its local constructions. By exploring such representations and contestations, we can see how new definitions of Germanness arise and how new inclusions and exclusions are made. Germany since 1945”. Spread over 4,000-plus square metres, it is a lively and up-to-date panorama of contemporary German history, with individual perspectives set in an inkternational context. It showcases original artefacts. There are many inter- active stations plus interviews with contemporary witnesses to escort you on your way from the end of the Second World War to the present. 1945 – 1949 Burden of the Past and Germany’s Division World War II, unleashed by Germany, ends with the surrender of the German armed forces on 8 May 1945. What remains is largely a traumatized and devastated country. The Allies occupy Germany and divide it into four zones. Many people are dead or missing; families are torn apart. The enormity of the Nazi crimes raises questions about accountability: Who knew, who shared the blame? But widespread public discussion doesn’t get started in Germany until the 1960s. The ravages of war and the country’s division have devastated the economy. Rationing is supposed to assure the distribution of basic supplies, but the black market is booming. In 1948 the deutschmark is introduced in the western zones, laying the groundwork for an economic upturn. The occupied zones grow apart politically and economically: In the west is born the Federal Republic of Germany, a parliamen - tary democracy; in the east the GDR, a coercive communist state modelled on the Soviet Union. -

MUNICH MOZART´S STAY The life and work of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is closely connected to Munich, a centre of the German music patronage. Two of his most famous works Mozart composed in the residence city of Munich: On the 13th January, 1775 the premiere from „La finta giardinera “took place, on the 29th January, 1781 the opera "Idomeneo" was launched at Cuvilliés Theater. Already during his first trip at the age of six years Wolfgang played together with his sister Nannerl for Elector Maximilian Joseph III. The second visit followed a year later, in June, 1763. From Munich the Mozart family started to their three year European journey to Paris and London. On the way back from this triumphal journey they stopped in Munich again and Mozart gave concerts at the Emperors court. Main focus of the next trip to Munich (1774 – in 1775) was the premiere of the opera "La finta giardiniera" at the Salvatortheater. In 1777 when Wolfgang and his mother were on the way to Paris Munich was destination again and they stayed 14 days in the Isar city. Unfortunately, at that time Wolfgang aspired in vain to and permanent employment. Idomeneo, an opera which Mozart had composed by order of Elector Karl Theodor, was performed in Munich for the first time at the glamorous rococo theatre in the Munich palace, the Cuvilliés Theater. With pleasure he would have remained in Munich, however, there was, unfortunately, none „vacatur “for him again. In 1790 Mozart came for the last time to Munich on his trip to the coronation of Leopold II in Frankfurt. -

Digital German-Jewish Futures: Experiential Learning, Activism, and Entertainment. Abstract The future of the German-Jewish past is, in a word, digital, and not only in the sense of digital humanities or digital history. Future generations of scholars, students, and the general public will engage with the past online in the same ways—and for many of the same reasons—that they engage with everything else. There needs to be something redeeming, enjoyable, or at least memorable about studying history for people to feel that it is worthwhile. For many, the act of learning about the past serves as a kind of virtual travel, even an escape, to another time and place. Learning about German-Jewish history becomes possible on a regular basis when it is easily accessible through the newest media on computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices. -

Der Umgang mit der deutschen Geschichte wird auch in Zukunft Thema in Politik und Gesellschaft sein, wird Wissenschaft und Unterricht beschäftigen und auch in den Familien immer wieder diskutiert werden – denn Geschichte wird in jeder Generation neu erzählt. Und dies geschieht zunehmend auch als Medienereignis und lockt Millionen vor die Fernseher. Aber können Dokudramen und historische Spielfilme den Geschichtsunterricht ersetzen? Wie verändern die neuen Medien unser Bild von der Vergangenheit? Und wie vermittelt man Geschichte an die kommenden Generationen und an Jugendliche z.B mit polnischen oder türkischen Wurzeln? Das Dossier bietet einen Überblick über die Geschichte der Erinnerungskultur in beiden deutschen Staaten, blickt zurück auf vergangene Kontroversen und sucht nach Antworten, wie die Erinnerung in Zukunft aussehen könnte.
