WOW, what a night!! I'm talking about Sunday 19th March at Soho's Spice Of Life venue. Charlie Gracie and the TFTW Band put on a show to remember, Yes, another triumph for us, just take a look at the photo of Charlie on stage at the Spice, you can see he was having a ball, enjoying the appreciation of the audience as much as they were enjoying him. You can read a review elsewhere within these pages, so I won’t labour the point here, except to offer gratitude to Charlie and the Tales From The Woods Band for making the evening so special, in no small part made possible by David the excellent sound engineer whom we request by name for our shows. As many of you have experienced at Rock’n’Roll shows, many a potentially brilliant set has been ruined by poor © Paul Harris sound, or literally having little idea how to sound up a vintage Rock’n’Roll gig. -
Hawkwind – 50Th Anniversary Live
Hawkwind – 50th Anniversary Live (58:39 + 48:56, CD, Vinyl, Cherry Red Records, 2020) So kennt man die Space-Rock- Urgesteine. Da feiern Hawkwind ihr 50-jähriges Jubiläum, aber statt darum ein Riesenbrimborium zu veranstalten bauen die Mannen um Dave Brock völlig unprätentiös eine Setlist aus einiges unverwüstlichen Klassikern, aber ebenfalls Material des aktuellen Studioalbums „All Aboard The Skylark“ zusammen. Optisch ansprechend verpackt mit einer Laserhsow, dazu als Gast den langzeitig freundschaftlich verbundenen Kompagnon Phil Campbell – seines Zeichens Gitarrist bei Motörhead – und fertig ist das individuelle Geburtstagspaket. Der Mitschnitt zu diesem Livealbum entstand auf dem Abschlusskonzert der „50th Anniversay Tour“ im November 2019 in der legendären Royal Albert Hall in London. Es steht zwar „50“ drauf, aber letztendlich steckt natürlich etwas weniger drinnen. Denn Hawkwind streifen eben nur einige Stationen ihrer umfangreichen Karriere, setzen zwar in erster Linie auf die Klassiker der 70er wie z.B. ‚Born To Go‘, ‚Space Is Deep‘, ‚Spirit Of The Age‘, ‚The Watcher‘, ‚Silver Machine‘ oder die beiden Doppelpacks ‚Assault And Battery / The Golden Void‘ und ‚Master Of The Universe / Welcome To The Future‘. Doch genauso bekommen insgesamt fünf Stücke aus „All Aboard The Skylark“ ihr Recht. Letztendlich ist dies ein teilweise übergangslos ineinander greifender Mix aus offensichtlichen Klassikern, wenngleich ohne die ganz großen Überraschungen. Dazu noch ein kurzes Blitzlicht in die 80er und 90er, angereichert um aktuelle Stücke. Immerhin gedenkt man beim unverwüstlichen ‚Silver Machine‘ dem legendären ehemaligen Bandmitglied Lemmy Kilmister, wobei ebenfalls der typische augenzwinkernde Humor nicht fehlen darf. Denn der bei diesem Stück den Gesang übernehmende Schlagzeuger Richard Chadwick kontert ganz locker die Frage „Richard verliert seine Stimme, möchtest Du noch ‚Silver Machine‘ singen?“ mit einem klaren „Es geht noch“ und schon geht die sprichwörtliche und gut geölte Space-Rock-Post, der Trip in weite Sphären, mit Volldampf ab. -

Obscene Gestures: Sexual Transgression and Late Twentieth-Century American Political Culture Patrick Scott Lawrence, PhD University of Connecticut, 2016 Tracing a cultural history from the 1970s to the 1990s, Obscene Gestures places popular and legal notions of obscenity in conversation with anti-consumerist and anti-capitalist resistance movements, women of color feminism, and LGBTQ activism. Since the 1973 Supreme Court ruling in Miller v. California, obscenity discourse has policed the shape of the nation by marking non-normative bodies as objectionable. The dissertation’s study of the cultural artifacts this discourse concerns opens by situating the history of literary obscenity alongside the key theories of sexuality, power, race, and knowledge. The first body chapter links the Miller ruling with 1970s-era neoconservative policies by considering some of the decade’s major novels, including Thomas Pynchon’s Gravity’s Rainbow (1973), revealing a home- front cultural politics that stymied dissent by classing as out of bounds many forms of political speech, including Huynh Cong Ut’s 1972 photo The Terror of War. Chapter Two builds upon the polarization this moment caused via an analysis of the feminist battles over pornography in the early 1980s. I juxtapose figures on both sides of this debate with works by women of color, such as Alice Walker’s The Color Purple (1983), that address the histories of embodiment that this debate tended to obscure. The occlusion of race in organizing around pornography parallels the role of possessive individualism in justifying racial wealth disparities during the Reagan administration, which the third chapter highlights. Working in the shadow of the 1986 Meese Commission report, this chapter interprets neoliberal economic policies as an enactment of racial indifference through the metaphors of sex and violence in The Bonfire of the Vanities (1987) and American Psycho (1990). -

THE PITIFULS Hold My Heart To The Fire LocoBop L2I-012 Malaco Records’ house band in Jackson, MS was one of the best tight knit rhythm sections that southern studios were noted for in the 1960s and ‘70s. James Stroud (drums), Carson Whitsett (keyboards), Dino Zimmerman (guitar), and Don Barrett (bass) shaped hits by ZZ Hill, Dorothy Moore, Paul Simon, Paul Davis, Little Milton, Bobby Blue Bland, Johnnie Taylor, and Eddie Floyd. In the early 1980s, Stroud seized an opportunity to work with some of Nashville’s biggest names. Barrett, Zimmerman, and Whitsett, coincidently but individually, made Nashville their home as well. No longer a unit, they independently recorded with KT Oslin, Eddie Rabbitt, Janis Ian, Kathy Mattea, BB King, Eric Clapton, Suzy Bogguss, John Mayall, and Waylon Jennings. Whitsett also collaborated with Dan Penn, Tony Joe White, and others writing hits for Solomon Burke, Lorrie Morgan, John Anderson, Joe Cocker, and Conway Twitty. THE NEXT FOOL I FORGOT TO BE YOUR LOVER In 1996, Whitsett, Zimmerman, and Barrett reunited for a CLEAN SLATE one-off project with drummer Jimmy Hyde of Eddie SMOKE FILLED ROOM Rabbitt’s band and keyboardist Gene Sisk (Sawyer Brown, LOVE AT WORK The Judds, Earl Scruggs). Dubbing themselves The THE PITIFULS Pitifuls, they recorded this album in Memphis with Grammy- HOLD MY HEART TO THE FIRE award-winning engineer Danny Jones. THEY SAY BACKSLIDIN' Don Barrett sings lead on the majority of tracks, alternating I'M GONNA LOVE YOU OUT OF HIS LIFE with the grittier Jimmy Hyde. Except for Barrett's I'm Gonna Love You Right Out Of His Life and the Soul classic I Forgot To Be Your Lover, all songs were penned by Carson Whitsett, some in tandem with Dan Penn, Larry Byrom, Gary Nicholson, and others. -

The storms hit during the night of Friday, Feb- ruary 2, 2007, at about 3:15, when most residents were sleeping. This is the news that I heard when I woke up just hours later. They are not hurt, which is a miracle itself since they were asleep. Billy woke up and heard stuff hitting their home, told everyone (even a couple visiting from Atlanta) to go to the hall bath. Connie started through the hall toward the living room when the windows blew, and all hell broke loose. She held onto a doorknob for her life. The Atlanta cou- ple's car was found blocks away. -

The Anderson Brothers Baby I Love You LocoBop L2I-011 The Anderson Brothers, Stefan and Joe, were Shreveport, Louisiana natives. Stefan Anderson was an amazingly gifted singer (a stronger, bigger-voiced Joe Cocker). Younger brother Joe had a huskier, lighter voice that was otherwise very similar to Stefan’s. Both brothers were accomplished songwriters as well. The Andersons migrated to Jackson, Mississippi in 1968, where they remained fixtures on the music scene for many years. Stefan released a few singles on Capitol and Stax, but the brothers never recorded together until 1977 when London-based producers Tim Whitsett and Chick Churchill, joined by Whitsett’s brother Carson, cut their first album ‘Lock ‘Em Away’ at Malaco Studios in Jackson (released by British label DJM in 1978). The follow-up, ‘Baby I Love You’ was recorded in 1978. Like the first album, The Andersons are backed by the crack Malaco rhythm section, whose BABY I LOVE YOU credits include "Mr. Big Stuff" (Jean Knight), “Groove Me" MISSISSIPPI MISERY (King Floyd), ‘”Rhymin’ Simon” (Paul Simon), “Ring My ANOTHER DAY Bell” (Anita Ward), and "Misty Blue" (Dorothy Moore). Backing vocals were provided by Rhodes, Chalmers, BACK ON STAGE Rhodes (Al Green, The Bee Gees). CAN'T TELL THE TRUTH IT'S LOVE The album contains numerous potential singles in a gumbo BLACK CAT BLUES style of pop, rock & roll, R&B, and honky-tonk-country. CAPTURE ME There are traces of Bob Seger, Joe Coker, Bruce Hornsby, Boz Scaggs, and Steely Dan here. Stefan’s stellar vocal SOMEONE TO CARE performances on BABY I LOVE YOU and the ballads WITH THESE HANDS ANOTHER DAY and IT'S LOVE are as compelling as they are timeless. -
