  • Comments from Book Owners (2007)
Comments 2007 Second Quarter Greg…..just got the book….what an amazing project….can’t tell you how much I appreciate being included in the text. Best of luck to you with it. Many thanks Duke Duke Bardwell (Greek Fountains) Greg, While in high school (67-68) I played sax with the Originals where I became friends with Wilson Rodgers. I followed Wilson to play bass with the Platters (Buck Ram's) where we got tight with Duke Hall who, with Wilson created Black & Blue. I was the original bass player and stage director of the band. (BTW, the photo you have of the group has Duke's wife standing in for Linda Green (who was not available for the hasty photo). I worked for short periods with the Monzas and the Peace Corp. The Peace Corp was a seasoned and talented group with Freddy Owens as their primary front man (Freddie and I knew each other from the 2nd grade. I was a too much of a hippy at the time and didn't really fit in with those guys but it was musically a blast. That was the end of my "beach music" days as I eventually drifted into jazz and moved to Florida where there was more opportunity for work. Gary Champion Gary, Thanks, we appreciate getting updated information. Do we have your tenures with both the Originals Monzas and Black & Blue in the band directories? If not, please forward the correct info, We would love to publish any other 60s era photos you have with any of the bands.

Wymienię tylko niektóre z nich: Hot’ Lanta, Whipping Post, Mountain Jam, Don’t Keep Me Wonder- ing, Dreams, It’s Not My Cross To Bear, Melissa, Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More, Wasted Words, Midnight Rider, One More Ride, Things You Used To Do, Just Ain’t Easy, Come And Go Blues, Mystery Woman, Desdemona, Leavin’.

  • Introduction What Is Southern Rock?
Introduction What Is Southern Rock? It seems essential to define the term “southern rock” before one can write about it. This is necessary in order to plan what goes into the text and what gets left out. So what exactly is southern rock? Trying to define it is tantamount to going down the proverbial rab- bit hole. It’s a slippery, nebulous term that can mean almost anything. On its face it appears to imply rock music from the 1970s that came from the South, but that could include anything from Wet Willie to Marshall Tucker to Lynyrd Skynyrd, acts that have little in common stylistically or sound-wise. Author Scott B. Bomar states that the term “southern rock” was first used in the early 1970s by Mo Slotin, a writer for the Atlanta un- derground paper Great Speckled Bird in a review of an Allman Brothers Band concert.1 But the phrase didn’t come into broad usage until Al Kooper incorporated the concept into the name of his Atlanta-based record label, Sounds of the South, before he signed Lynyrd Skynyrd. Kooper was one of the first—along with Phil Walden of Capricorn Re- cords, founded in 1969—to realize that southern talent was something that might be codified and commodified. It happened that Skynyrd fit nicely into Kooper’s concept. Some people argue that southern rock is an amalgam of rock, blues, and country, dominated by electric guitars. However, applying this · 1 · definition, the early “rockabilly” acts out of Memphis—Elvis, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis—along with Chuck Berry, Buddy Knox, and Buddy Holly might also qualify as southern rockers.

Issue 134 APRIL 12TH, 2021 With Copper’s new format, long “Opening Salvo” intros take up a lot of space when viewed on a phone, so we’ll keep them short from now on. This line from Gary Wilson from his song “I Wanna Take You On A Sea Cruise” seems appropriate for the times: “Hey baby, there’s only two more days till tomorrow!” In this issue: Anne E. Johnson offers retrospectives on cinematic storyteller Randy Newman and on troubadours ancient and modern. Tom Gibbs reviews new releases from Frank Zappa, Charles Lloyd and Dr. Lonnie Smith. J.I. Agnew begins a series on historic tape recorders with a look at the Studer A80 and interview with Paul Gold of Salt Mastering. Roy Hall has memories of "Hey Jude.” Wayne Robins digs Rita Indiana. Steven Bryan Bieler realizes it’s all about the bass. Ken Sander celebrates Thanksgiving at the Fillmore East. Jay Jay ponders streaming audio quality. What’s it like to suffer from electromagnetic hypersensitivity? We ask Dav Bedi of RadiAsian.London to find out. Stuart Marvin interviews groundbreaking music promoter Eppy Epstein of My Father’s Place, Russ Welton interviews Yamaha UK, and Ray Chelstowski wraps up his talk with keyboardist extraordinaire Chuck Leavell.
