The Folk Club of Reston-Herndon Preserving the traditions of Folk Music, Folk Lore, and Gentle Folk Ways www.RestonHerndonFolkClub.com Volume 24, Issue 6 June 2008 June 10 Showcase – Richard White with David Jaroneski and Ron Goad Talk about beginner's luck! The very first time I put my name in the showcase hat, I won! I am so happy to have found the Folk Club and the wonderful people that make up the group. There is a nice vibe here, a welcoming feeling, and that is what makes it special to me. For this showcase I will present some of my original songs with me on the guitar, my old Richmond friend David Jaroneski on bass, and Ron Goad adding percussion. I first picked up a guitar when I was twelve and I was hooked! I was listening to lots of good music in those days. I really liked the swampy sound of John Fogerty, and those Johnny Cash tunes with that string-bending guitar sound (so cool). I can't say that my playing was "formed" enough to have a style, but I knew what I liked! In the early 90's I first heard the late guitarist Michael Hedges, and I really liked what he was doing with alternate tunings. I studied his tunings and began to experiment with my own. I also listened to Pierre Bensusan, Leo Kottke and the Hawaiian slack key masters and their many tunings. I began to write guitar solos using new tunings, and that's when I started playing out in the Richmond area.

Philly is a symbol of independence... AND just like this great country of ours was founded by a bunch of rebels seeking freedom, so too are we seeking the freedom of independence from a music industry that is no longer run by musicians for the love of music. Instead, it's now run by multi-national corporations that are more concerned with profits than with artists and the music which they lovingly create to share with the world. There are currently over 2200 indie musicians and industry people on the IMC2003 email group, working to create a new music industry... the INDIE music industry! Please check out the web site at IMC2003.com, join us in building this revolutionary event. Nothing about the IMC will be the same as what we’ve been used to regarding music conferences. Throw out your preconceptions and help us make this exactly what YOU need it to be! Showcase Performance Workshop submission deadlines have been determined, watch the site for the Phase 1 Application Form. The application deadline is October 31, 2002. OREGON MUSIC / AUGUST 2002 photo Buko TWO LOUIES, August 2002 - Page 3 By Lisa Lepine ave Carter, a singer and songwriter who with partner Tracy Grammer Dwas one of the fastest-rising acts in contemporary folk music, has died July 19th of a massive heart attack in Hadley, MA. He would have tunred 50 on August 13. Carter had the rare ability to pen songs that were at once deeply spiritual, often mystical, and yet universal in their emotional scope and melodic allure. Many predicted Carter and Grammer would become major stars. Their latest compact disc, “Drum Hat Buddha,’’ released on the Western Massachusetts label Signature Sounds, was seen as a major breakthrough record, prompting the Associated Press to say of Carter, who wrote the songs for the duo, “He writes songs that can stand with the best of contemporary singer-songwriters or sound like they were written 100 years ago.’’ The Los Angeles Times announced Mr. Carter as “a major lyrical talent,’’ and Great Britain’s Folk Roots magazine said his songs were “destined to become the stuff of legend.’’ The duo was just becoming known outside the vibrant subculture of modern folk music. Joan Baez had recently embraced Mr. Carter’s music in the same fervor with which she famously promoted the songs of Bob Dylan in the 1960s and Dar Wil- liams in the ‘90s. She planned to record several of Mr. Carter’s songs and to use them in a world tour, as she did nationally last spring. In a Globe profile of Mr. Carter and Grammer last fall, Baez praised Mr.

  • What's a Nields? the Nields Story Begins with the Two Sisters
What's A Nields? The Nields story begins with the two sisters. Nerissa and Katryn a grew up singing folk songs in the kitchen and in the back seat of the family car. Katryna learned to sing melody with their father, eventually making her an ideal front person for the band. Nerissa, on the other hand, tackled the harmonies; with that skill, she provided a natural counterpoint to her sister's vibrant lead. "I knew I wanted to be a singer and songwriter from the time I was 7," explains Nerissa. "I remember I wrote my first song that I was really proud of when I was 13, and right away I had a harmony for it, so I dragged Katryna out of her room and taught her the harmony. It was instinct -- I knew that my sister should be there." In the late '80s, Nerissa and Katryna met a graduate student named David Jones, who had always longed for a career in music. Playing acoustic guitar through an electric pedal board, he joined the sisters as they played open mics in the Washington, DC area. Later, he married Nerissa and took HER last name ("Just like the Ramones!," he said). The trio then moved to New England and released their first two recordings, 66 Hoxsey St. (named after the house in Williamstown, MA that Nerissa and David were living in when they started the band, pictured here) and Live At The Iron Horse. They then convinced their close friend, bassist Dave Chalfant to join the band in time to produce their third self-released recording, Bob On The Ceiling in June, 1994.

Recorded in their home studios between 1997 and 2002, the album offers a glimpse into the duo’s musical process. Fully fleshed-out folk and Americana songs left off of other albums find a home alongside intimate, late-night living room recordings, reference tracks for multi-artist collaborations and rare demos produced for Joan Baez’s consideration. A fan of Dave & Tracy’s music, Baez has performed several of Carter’s songs along with such artists as Mary Chapin Carpenter, Chris Smither and Lucy Kaplansky. Grammer discovered the tracks for Little Blue Egg during an emergency archiving project in the summer of 2010, a full eight years after Carter’s death. Rescuing the original ADAT tapes from a moldy basement where they were stored, she happily discovered that the tapes were in pristine condition. As she digitized the tapes in real-time, Tracy pored over old studio notes about the recordings. “Tears flowed, I laughed out loud, memories flooded back,” Grammer remembers. “It felt like a miracle to hear Dave’s voice -- and our voices, together -- singing old songs that sounded new again, along with others I had forgotten about entirely.” From a total of about 30 tapes, Grammer compiled 16 songs worth of release -- several of which had never before been published.
