subway line of continental Europe was built in Budapest. The beautiful city of Budapest is made up of 2 parts – Buda and Pest – which are separated by the Danube river. The Hungarian Parliament is the 3rd largest parliament building in the world, with 691 rooms and 20 kilometres of stairs. Hungary is one of the best birding areas in Europe: almost 400 bird species breed here. Amongst the many Hungaricums 5 are related to Hungarian gastronomy. Covering almost 600 square kilometres, Lake Balaton (nicknamed “the Hungarian Sea”) is the largest lake in Central Europe. Each day, 70 million litres of thermal water rise to the surface in Budapest. Hungary ranks 8th in the world for medallists at the Summer Olympic Games. The oversized snail-shaped egg noodles (csiga) that Hungarians use in many recipes are thought to date back to the 9th century. The bat fauna of the Gömör-Torna Karst region has been studied for several decades, in par ti cu lar that of the Aggtelek Karst (Hungary). The earliest research was mainly conducted in the well-known Baradla cave system, whilst other sites in the region were somewhat neglected. At the end of the 1980s a new research programme started, when studies on house-dwelling bat species and a comparative analysis of results was systematically carried out. These results played an important role in the conservation strategies for the protection of roosts (e.g. in churches). Some of these roosts were of international im por tan ce. During the third period of research, a survey of man-made caverns and of forest-dwelling bat po pu la ti ons began. This research revealed that 26 bat species inhabited the administrative area of the Aggtelek National Park (24 species in the proper area of the national park). These fi gures prove that there is a very rich bat fauna in terms of both species and their populations. The latest faunistical studies and the pro te cti on of these populations have both signifi cantly improved our knowledge on the distribution and occur ren ce of several species. This is the second time this competition is held in conjunction with the FINA World Championships, also staged in the Magyar capital from July 14 - 30. Our hosts are ready to deliver a great event and will provide the best possible conditions to the thousands of participants in this competition. This will certainly reinforce the traditional values of the Masters Move- ment – friendship, understanding and fitness. This significant change – introduced since the 2015 edition in Kazan (RUS) - gave additional visibility to the Masters athletes and allows, for many of them, to witness the performances of the elite stars in the pool. This major event – in fact, the biggest championships organised by FINA in terms of participation – is certainly a milestone for those who devoted part of their lives to their passion for one of the five FINA disciplines: swimming, diving, water polo, synchronised swimming and open water swimming. With the FINA World Masters Championships, we want to prove that even when retired from the high level competition, or just practicing sport for leisure, our athletes are still capable to delight us with their performances.     Anna Tüskés Masonic Works in the Helikon Library of the Festetics Palace in Keszthely Books were very important for the Festetics family settled down in Keszthely in the second half of the 1740s: the bookstore had been created in Kristóf Fest- etics’s palace.1 From 1782 Count György Festetics (I.) had been the lord of the entail, he was one of the most outstanding personalities of the Hungarian En- lightenment and had a whole annexe built to his library between 1799–1801.2 The library room can be found with a small adjoining cabinet library in the south wing of the palace. In the many ten thousand-volume library can equally be found works of antique authors, Hungarian literature and science, philo- sophical literature from the era of Enlightenment, the latest economic studies at the time of acquisition, as well as a significant newspaper and journal mate- rial. The library of Keszthely is a baronial library so the collection of books and the motivation of reading were combined when the books were purchased.3 György Festetics studied at the Collegium Theresianum in Vienna between 1768–1775.4 He had well-trained Jesuit teachers, such as the professor of philos- ophy, Italian language and agronomics, Lajos Mitterpacher, the mathematician and physicist Pál Makó, the professor of Italian language, civil and military architecture, János Izzo, the poet, bibliographer, insect expert Michael Denis and many others.5 During his studies, Festetics perfectly learned German, Latin, French, Italian and English. The rest of the day is at leisure so you can stroll along the banks of the Danube, visit the historic Great Market Hall with its endless variety of delicious foods and wines or head to one of the city’s famous thermal baths for a rejuvenating dip. Alternatively you can relax at the hotel and indulge in the hotel’s luxurious spa with infinity-edge pool or make use of the state-of-the-art fitness centre. This evening we will enjoy a beautiful dinner cruise along the Danube. Day 3 - Keszthely After breakfast join the Golden Eagle Danube Express at Nugyati station after a reception in the Imperial Waiting Room and head to Keszthely on the western shore of Lake Balaton.
