The project was implemented from 2007 to 2010 with partners from Jordan, Palestinian Authority and Israel. The main aim of the research is to examine the economic benefits and feasibility of encouraging naturally occurring birds as biological pest controllers as a replacement for rodenticides. Rodenticides have severe negative impacts on the environment: pollute soils and water sources, damage ecosystems, and have secondary poisoning health effects on wildlife and humans. The danger to wildlife is particularly poignant in this region being located along a major bird migration route of global significance where it is estimated that over 500 million birds pass through twice a year. We believe that such positive results will ultimately encourage more organizations and government agencies within the entire region to work towards environmentally sustainable agriculture. We have had excellent success in creating the experimental design within each participating country and building professional capacities, most of which were completely new to the Arab partners. Over the past 3 years we have had seven training workshops in Jordan and in Israel and over 30 regular meetings have been held between the partners. Moreover, we have succeeded in raising public awareness of environmental issues through the media, events and pUblications. The results of the research are promising in terms of our original aims, despite the inherent difficulties in these types of field experiments where many factors are beyond the control of the researchers. For instance, the research suffered from natural causes in the fonn of a 3-year drought that negatively impacted wheat and other crops grown without irrigation, and which consequently decreases rodent populations and ultimately predatory bird populations as well. In pooling data from the 3 wheat and bird breeding seasons we found that the presence of breeding birds of prey such as bam owls and kestrels does result in slightly higher wheat yields but this finding was not significant statistically. However, when we enlarged our study to include 10 years of historical data of alfalfa fields from within Israel (where the bam owl project has been operated for over 20 years) we found significant positive effects of the owls on crop yields. When we translated this into dollars we found that avian-predation biological rodent control technology increases net returns by $220 per hectare of one harvest. As alfalfa is harvested on average 7.7 times per year the total net return could be as much as $1,694 per hectare annually. Another important outcome of this project is the significant support we have raised from other major foundations wanting join our efforts and in so doing create further momentum and sustainability for this project into the future. This includes significant support from the Hanns Seidel Foundation (2009-2012) and the Peres Center for Peace and Development (2010-2013) via grants from the European Commission and locally from the Jordanian, Palestinian and Israeli Ministries of Agriculture and the Israeli Ministry of Environment. We recently published a booklet highlighting 15 years of regional cooperation (see Appendix). This summary of our activities clearly shows the commitment and strength of both the partners involved and the power of birds to bridge political barriers. Final Report, 2007-2010, Project: M25-078 Page 4 1. RESEARCH OBJECTIVES 1.1 Background The Jordan Valley is world renowned as an area rich in human and natural history. Perched along the northern edge of the Great Rift Valley, the Jordan Valley encompasses a rich blend of geologic formations, diverse plant and animal species, and ancient human history. This region of the Middle East has undergone a massive expansion of agriculture over the past 50 years. Modern agricultural techniques have contributed to the industry by significantly increasing yields and decreasing the amount of effort required per cultivated area. However, these techniques have also resulted in significant negative impacts to the environment.

Many of the sources posed problems concerning numerical data on immi­ gration, especially for the months leading up to the end of the British Mandate, January-April 1948, and the first few months of the state, May­ August 1948. The researchers point out that 7,574 immigrant data cards are missing from the records and believe this to be due to the 'circumstances of the times'. Records are complete from September 1948 onward, and an important population census was held in November 1948. A parallel record­ ing system conducted by the Jewish Agency, which continued to operate after that of the Mandatory Government, provided us with statistical data for immigration during 1948-9 and made it possible to analyse the part taken by the Holocaust survivors.

Most of the country is in a semi-arid zone, with distinct short winter (wet) and long summer (dry) seasons, and a low annual rainfall of around 500 mm (an overall multi-annual average). The country can be divided into two climatic regions: (1) the southern arid/semi-arid areas have very low annual precipitation (<100 mm) and consist of the Negev Desert and the Arava Valley; this arid zone extends also to the Jordan Valley where annual rainfall is below 300 mm; (2) the central-north of the country that has a temperate, Mediterranean climate and a relatively high annual rainfall (>600 mm). Israel has suffered from a chronic water shortage for years. In recent years, however, the situation has developed into a severe crisis; since 1998, the country has suffered from drought, and the annual rainfall was short of the multi-annual average in most of the years.

In 1936, all six members of my family made Aliya to Palestine and settled in Tel Aviv. I completed my studies in the school for children of workers, and my secondary and technical education at the Montefiore School. In 1938, while I was in the Noar Oved movement, I joined the Hagana in the framework of the Gadna and the following year entered the sea branch of Hapoel Tel Aviv. In 1939 I was accepted into the course for nautical instructors (in the company of others such as Avraham Meron, Miloh Meir, and David Geva (all of blessed memory) and Tzvi Shor, Yehuda Shinitsky, and Moka Limon. Shmuel Tankus (a future commander of the Israeli Navy) was the instructor. From the Palmach to the Navy: In 1942, I joined the Palmach and was accepted into the second course for small boat commanders.

Preface This book describes and analyses various aspects of Israeli climate. This work also elucidates how both man and nature adjust to various climates. The first part (Chapters 1-9) deals with the meteorological and climatological network stations, the history of climate research in Israel, analysis of the local climate by season, and a discussion of the climate variables their spatial and temporal distribution.

    The Journal of Israeli History Vol. 31, No. 1, March 2012, 147–165 Kibbutz fiction and Yishuv society on the eve of statehood: The Ma’agalot (Circles) affair of 19451 Shula Keshet* The novel Circles (1945) by David Maletz, a founding member of Kibbutz Ein Harod, created a furor both in kibbutz society and among its readers in the Yishuv. The angry responses raise numerous questions about the status of kibbutz society at the time and the position of the writer in it. This article examines the reasons for the special interest in Maletz’s book and considers its literary qualities. On the basis of the numerous responses to the book, it analyzes how kibbutz society was viewed in that period, both by its own members and by the Yishuv in general, and addresses the special dynamics of the work’s reception in a totally ideological society. The case of Circles sheds light on the ways in which kibbutz literature participated in the ideological construction of the new society, while at the same time criticizing its most basic assumptions from within. Reading this novel in historical perspective provides insight into the roots of this crisis.
