Many of the sources posed problems concerning numerical data on immi gration, especially for the months leading up to the end of the British Mandate, January-April 1948, and the first few months of the state, May August 1948. The researchers point out that 7,574 immigrant data cards are missing from the records and believe this to be due to the 'circumstances of the times'. Records are complete from September 1948 onward, and an important population census was held in November 1948. A parallel record ing system conducted by the Jewish Agency, which continued to operate after that of the Mandatory Government, provided us with statistical data for immigration during 1948-9 and made it possible to analyse the part taken by the Holocaust survivors.

An overview on desert aquaculture in Israel. In V. Crespi & A. Lovatelli, eds. Aquaculture in desert and arid lands: development constraints and opportunities. FAO Technical Workshop. 6–9 July 2010, Hermosillo, Mexico. FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Proceedings No. 20. Rome, FAO. 2011. pp. 85–112. SUMMARY The State of Israel has a very diverse climate. Most of the country is in a semi-arid zone, with distinct short winter (wet) and long summer (dry) seasons, and a low annual rainfall of around 500 mm (an overall multi-annual average). The country can be divided into two climatic regions: (1) the southern arid/semi-arid areas have very low annual precipitation (<100 mm) and consist of the Negev Desert and the Arava Valley; this arid zone extends also to the Jordan Valley where annual rainfall is below 300 mm; (2) the central-north of the country that has a temperate, Mediterranean climate and a relatively high annual rainfall (>600 mm). Israel has suffered from a chronic water shortage for years. In recent years, however, the situation has developed into a severe crisis; since 1998, the country has suffered from drought, and the annual rainfall was short of the multi-annual average in most of the years.

  • The Scale Insects (Hemiptera: Coccoidea) of Oak Trees (Fagaceae: Quercus Spp.) in Israel
ISRAEL JOURNAL OF ENTOMOLOGY, Vol. 43, 2013, pp. 95-124 The scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccoidea) of oak trees (Fagaceae: Quercus spp.) in Israel MALKIE SPODEK1,2, YAIR BEN-DOV1 AND ZVI MENDEL1 1Department of Entomology, Volcani Center, Agricultural Research Organization, POB 6, Bet Dagan 50250, Israel 2Department of Entomology, Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, POB 12, Rehovot 76100, Israel Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccoidea) of four species of oaks (Fagaceae: Quercus) in Israel namely, Q. boissieri, Q. calliprinos, Q. ithaburensis, and Q. look were collected and identified from natural forest stands during the period 2010-2013. A total of twenty-seven species were determined from nine scale insect families: Asterolecaniidae (3 species), Coccidae (3), Di- aspididae (7), Eriococcidae (3), Kermesidae (6), Kuwaniidae (1), Mono- phlebidae (1), Pseudococcidae (2), and Putoidae (1). Six of these species represent new records for Israel and five are identified to the genus level. Kuwaniidae is a new family record for Israel. Species that were previously collected or recorded on oaks in Israel are listed and discussed. Information is given about host trees and global distribution. The majority of the spe- cies reported here are monophagous or stenophagous and they appear to be non-pestiferous to the oak trees in Israel. General traits that describe each scale insect family in the field are provided, together with an identification key to aid in the determination of slide-mounted specimens into families represented in this study. KEY WORDS: Scale insect, Coccoidea, oak trees, Quercus, forest, survey, monophagous, univoltine, Mediterranean, Israel INTRODUCTION The genus Quercus (Fagaceae) has a rich and diverse arthropod fauna associated with it (Southwood, 1961; Southwood et al., 2005).

  • Three Conquests of Canaan
ÅA Wars in the Middle East are almost an every day part of Eero Junkkaala:of Three Canaan Conquests our lives, and undeniably the history of war in this area is very long indeed. This study examines three such wars, all of which were directed against the Land of Canaan. Two campaigns were conducted by Egyptian Pharaohs and one by the Israelites. The question considered being Eero Junkkaala whether or not these wars really took place. This study gives one methodological viewpoint to answer this ques- tion. The author studies the archaeology of all the geo- Three Conquests of Canaan graphical sites mentioned in the lists of Thutmosis III and A Comparative Study of Two Egyptian Military Campaigns and Shishak and compares them with the cities mentioned in Joshua 10-12 in the Light of Recent Archaeological Evidence the Conquest stories in the Book of Joshua. Altogether 116 sites were studied, and the com- parison between the texts and the archaeological results offered a possibility of establishing whether the cities mentioned, in the sources in question, were inhabited, and, furthermore, might have been destroyed during the time of the Pharaohs and the biblical settlement pe- riod. Despite the nature of the two written sources being so very different it was possible to make a comparative study. This study gives a fresh view on the fierce discus- sion concerning the emergence of the Israelites. It also challenges both Egyptological and biblical studies to use the written texts and the archaeological material togeth- er so that they are not so separated from each other, as is often the case.

My parents, who were from the petit bourgeois class, were members of the Oved movement and among the founders of our town's Tarbut School, in which I studied. It was at this school that I gained my knowledge of Zionism, modern Jewish history and the Land of Israel. That was in addition to studies in the official Polish school. In 1936, all six members of my family made Aliya to Palestine and settled in Tel Aviv. I completed my studies in the school for children of workers, and my secondary and technical education at the Montefiore School. In 1938, while I was in the Noar Oved movement, I joined the Hagana in the framework of the Gadna and the following year entered the sea branch of Hapoel Tel Aviv. In 1939 I was accepted into the course for nautical instructors (in the company of others such as Avraham Meron, Miloh Meir, and David Geva (all of blessed memory) and Tzvi Shor, Yehuda Shinitsky, and Moka Limon. Shmuel Tankus (a future commander of the Israeli Navy) was the instructor. From the Palmach to the Navy: In 1942, I joined the Palmach and was accepted into the second course for small boat commanders.
