THE GEOLOGY OF THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 244 AND 44 INTERCHANGE, KIRKWOOD MISSOURI BY JOHN NEIL THOMAS A THESIS submitted to the faculty of the UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI AT ROLLA in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE, GEOLOGY MAJOR Rolla, Missouri 1965 Approved by ~~ (advisor) ~.Ad~ ii ABSTRACT During the summer of 1964, construction was completed on the intersection of Interstate Highways 244, 44 and u.s. Highway 66, one mile southwest of Kirkwood, Missouri. Dur­ ing the construction of the interchange, numerous artificial exposures of rocks of the middle Mississippian Meramecian Series were exposed. This provided an excellent opportunity for examining fresh exposures near the type Meramecian Ser­ ies. The formations of the area were studied, and starti­ graphic sections were prepared from three of the more com­ plete sections that were measured and described. The high­ way cuts expose complete sections of the Warsaw and Salem formations, and the lower part of the St. Louis Formation. The exposed sections within the thesis area were correlated both locally and regionally. Correlations of the local sec­ tions indicate considerable lateral variability of the lime­ stone and shale units within the Warsaw and Salem formations. A geologic map of the interchange area was prepared while the bedrock was sti 11 exposed along the roadway, prior to filling and grading. Thirty-three thin sections were prepared from the lime­ stones in the sections. The carbonate rock types varied from a biosparite in the Warsaw and lower Salem formations, to a micrite in the upper Salem and St. Louis formations. The implications of the observable features in the thin sections indicate that the Meramecian Series was laid down during moderately shallow water conditions. During Wareaw times the iii seas were muddy as indicated by the prominence of shales in the formation, although there is the possibility of current action which either brought in no clays, or removed the finer muds during carbonate deposition. This lack of clays in the carbonate sections could also be the result of a lowering of the source area, thus eliminating the influx of muds and clays, allowing carbonate deposition to occur in the absence of the clay material. The presence of ripple marks and cross-bedding in much of the Salem Formation indicates shallow water deposition. The presence of intraformational breccia in rocks de­ posited during St. Louis time indicates that general quies­ cent conditions of sedimentation were periodically inter­ rupted by possible tectonic activity. In general, the car­ bonates of the St. Louis Formation are very fine-grained. The presence of algal growths indicates that a very small part of the formation is of organic origin. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The author wishes to thank and express his appreciation to Professor A. c. Purpose and Scope During the summer of 1963, the Weber Construction Com­ pany contracted to build the interchange of Interstate High­ ways 44 and 244, located in the southwestern corner of st. Louis County, Missouri. In their construction, they made numerous artificial exposures of the Meramecian Series of Mississippian age, which provided an excellent opportunity for examining fresh exposures of the type series. It is the purpose of this paper to ascertain the geo­ logy of the interchange area and redescribe the lithologies of the type Meramecian Series. In addition to detailed map­ ping, attention was given in the investigation to the paleon­ tology, petrology, and depositional conditions of the Warsaw, Salem and St. Louis formations. The base map used in the study was surveyed by the Missouri Highway Department. B. Procedure of Study During the summer of 1964, in the final phase of con­ struction of the interchange, the writer was granted per­ mission to begin a geological field investigation of the exposures.

Bristol and Ronald Prescott ABSTRACT The Tuscola Anticline, in east-central Illinois, lies astride the complex LaSalle Anticlinal Belt and dips steeply westward into the Fairfield Basin and gradually eastward into the Murdock Syncline. The anticline is broken into two structural highs, the Hayes Dome and the Shaw Dome. Pleistocene sediments, 50 to 250 feet thick, cover the area. Pennsylvanian sediments cover much of the area, thinning to expose an inlier of Mississippian, Devonian, and Silurian rock north of Tuscola. The basal Cambrian for- mation, the Mt. Simon Sandstone, is penetrated by only two wells. Oil production from the Kimmswick (Trenton) com- menced in 1962 from the R. D. Ernest No. 1 Schweighart well, near Hayes, and as of January 1, 1968, approximately 30 wells were producing oil. Cumulative oil production as of January 1, 1968, is approximately 94,000 barrels. The potential pay zone is confined to the upper 5 to 100 feet of structure and to the upper 125 feet of the Kimmswick, whose permeability ranges from 0.1 to 2. millidarcys, av- eraging 0.6, and whose porosity ranges from 2 to 12 per- cent.

McKinney ABSTRACT Concepts for generic diagnoses and discrimination of biserial fenestrate Bryozoa (Fenestellidae) have varied historically, but have largely been based on specialized colony forms (e.g., Archimedes), the shape and budding arrangement of chambers and other internal skeletal features such as hemisepta, and occasionally on the pres- ence or absence of discrete characters, such as placement of nodes on the frontal sur- face (e.g., Minilya). The question remains as to whether biserial fenestrate genera represent real biological clades, or whether they are convenient groupings of morpho- types based on untested characters. This study evaluates the distribution of 1075 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) from 15 fenestrate genera with measurements for nine morphometric characters – external features are not emphasized in most generic diagnoses. Here, each OTU represents a composite or idealized individual from a col- ony. Results show that OTUs plotted in principal component space do largely form coherent clusters based on a priori generic assignments. Thus the groupings based on characters other than the ones used to originally define them, add support to the notion of biological significance for recognized genera. The exceptions actually highlight and help resolve known issues. Therefore, we recognize Alternifenestella as a junior syn- onym of the genus Spinofenestella, and propose reassignment of Laxifenestella serrat- ula in Snyder (1991) to Fenestella serratula, and Fenestella sp. 1 in Ernst and Schroeder (2007) as Rectifenestella. We do not advocate that biserial fenestrate generic concepts should be based on the nine external characters used in this study, but rather that they can be used independently to evaluate the coherence of genera based on other discrete characters.

Free Downloads NMGS has decided to make peer-reviewed papers from our Fall Field Conference guidebooks available for free download. Non-members will have access to guidebook papers two years after publication. Members have access to all papers. This is in keeping with our mission of promoting interest, research, and cooperation regarding geology in New Mexico. However, guidebook sales represent a significant proportion of our operating budget. Therefore, only research papers are available for download.
