Gospel Acclamation: John 15:16: I have chosen you from the world, says the Lord, to go and bear fruit that will remain. “As Catholics in the United States, we mark our annual observance of October as Respect Life Month. It is a time to focus on God’s precious gift of human life and our responsibility to care for, protect, and defend the lives of our brothers and sisters.

This year’s theme, ‘Live the Gospel of Life,’ was inspired by the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s encyclical, The Gospel of Life. Pope John Paul’s masterfully articulated defense of the right to life for children in their mothers’ wombs, the elderly, persons with disabilities, and the marginalized is more relevant today than ever before.

Last November, the U.S. bishops reaffirmed that ‘the threat of abortion remains our preeminent priority because it directly attacks life itself, because it takes place within the sanctuary of the family, and because of the number of lives destroyed.’ While we noted not to ‘dismiss or ignore other serious threats to human life and dignity such as racism, the environmental crisis, poverty, and the death penalty,’ we renewed our commitment to protect the most fundamental of all human rights – the right to live.

This past January, I shared with Pope Francis that the bishops of the United States had been criticized by some for identifying the protection of the unborn as a preeminent priority. The Holy Father expressed his support for our efforts observing that if we fail to protect life, no other rights matter. Pope Francis also said that abortion is not primarily a Catholic or even a religious issue, it is first and foremost a human rights issue.

The Gospel of Life provides a blueprint for building a culture of life and civilization of love. The important work of transforming our culture begins by allowing the Gospel of Christ to touch and transform our own hearts and the decisions we make. May we strive to imitate Christ and follow in his footsteps, caring for the most vulnerable among us. Through the intercession of , may Our Lord grant us the grace to live courageously and faithfully his Gospel of life.”

God First, Life Always, Teammates Forever! Life Runners is the world’s largest pro-life team, united to cross the finish line that ends abortion. Interested in joining the Stillwater Life Runners ? Please contact Mike Fuith at [email protected] to learn more about this opportunity to gather for running/ walking, prayer, and public witness to “Remember the Unborn - Jeremiah 1:5.” More information is available at www.liferunners.org.

Please help us welcome our newest parish family: Eric and Cheryl Blaha with their son Brock.

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Patricia Peterson and for all loved ones who mourn her loss. Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

We welcome to our parish community the newest member of our Christian family through the Sacrament of Baptism: James Christopher Lentz (Son of John and Rikkeena).

Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Shawn & Mia (Genereux) Cappello who entered the Holy Sacrament of Matrimony last weekend. May God remain the center of their marriage all the days of their lives!

Our St. Mary's Courtyard is on the way to becoming safer and more beautiful. The heaving of concrete during the winter's freezing and thawing grows worse each year, and the gutters installed with the new roof required proper drainage to avoid ice buildup. We were pleased to make some small changes this fall to get us through the winter, but more work will be necessary in the spring and summer.

A dollar-for-dollar match up to $10,000 has been offered for this endeavor. If you would like to support our courtyard renovation project, please indicate "St. Mary's Courtyard" on the memo or comment line. Thank you for helping our parish grounds remain a safe and beautiful place for us to gather! A mockup is available for viewing in the St. Mary’s Atrium.

Please pray for the repose of the soul of James Seiberlich and for all loved ones who mourn his loss. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Daniel and Veronica (Westrup) Norton who entered the Holy Sacrament of Matrimony last weekend. May God remain the center of their marriage all the days of their lives!

We are proud to present this year's 8th Grade Class, commissioned as leaders of the school at our annual Commissioning Mass held on Friday, September 25. Our 8th grade leaders were presented with St. Benedict bracelets to remind them of their call to servant leadership in this final year at SCCS. In turn, the 8th graders presented the Miraculous , a devotional medal that is also known as the Medal of Our Lady of Grace, to all students and staff new to SCCS this year. The design of the was originated bySt. Catherine Labouré following her apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Rue du Bac, Paris, France. Younger students were very excited to learn that they can call on our Heavenly Mother to intercede and pray for them whenever they need.

Our Fourth Grade students are gaining an understanding that THEY are scientists - even at their young age! Using newly acquired Science vocabulary, students recently took on a "Paper Challenge." With one glue stick, one piece of paper, some fun music, teamwork, and scientific thinking skills, they created something great! Visit News on the school’s homepage (www.StCroixCatholic.org) to watch a fun video.

St. Croix Catholic School is hosting a watch party in support of the important work of the Aim Higher Foundation. Twin Cities-based Aim Higher Foundation provides scholarships to students to attend every K-8 school in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, including St. Croix Catholic School. The Night of Light is Aim Higher’s primary fundraiser, and while the event cannot be held in person this year, we are eager to help their cause by hosting St. Croix Valley community members via virtual gathering. The program will formally begin at 6:00 p.m. and will last about 30 minutes. If you are able to participate, we will send you a Zoom link. Please contact Camille Kiolbasa at 651-439-5581 (Ext. 310) or [email protected] by October 5 to join us. Serving the parishes of St. Mary and St. Michael | Faith Formation Office: 651-351-3175

If you have a child in the second grade who would receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist this year and are not enrolled in the program or at St. Croix Catholic School, we still have room for you. Please contact our office or register online through the parish website.

Confirmation is not “graduation” or a “rite of passage.” It is the reception of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, equipping the candidate with the knowledge and understanding that he or she has been chosen by our Lord with undeserved and unconditional love. Confirmation completes the graces of Baptism, which is not to say that Confirmation is necessary for salvation (which we receive in Baptism). In simple terms, if the Baptismal candidate receives the grace of God unknowingly as an infant, then the Confirmation candidate receives the grace of knowing what has been and is being given as one who has reached the age of reason (7 years old).

Previously at our parishes, 9th grade has been the age in which students begin preparation for the Sacrament. However, since the Archdiocese allows students in 8th grade to receive Confirmation, our parishes will begin the preparation process for students in 8th grade, effective this year. We want our children to receive the graces of the Sacrament as soon as possible.

As part of the preparation process, we strongly recommend that students attend our 7th grade faith formation sessions, since these sessions are foundational to the faith formation process which takes them through Confirmation preparation in 8th grade. The preparation process officially takes one year, beginning in the fall of 8th grade; students older than 8th grade would attend the same sessions as the 8th graders. If you have any questions about the Confirmation preparation process, please contact Vianney Nguyen, Youth Evangelization and Discipleship Coordinator, at [email protected].

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is seeking woodworkers to fabricate materials for Faith Formation and St. Croix Catholic School atrium sessions. The children use the materials for their personal work time to further reflect on Scripture studies or Liturgical concepts. If you are interested in helping with some projects, please contact Danell Rudquist at [email protected] or Jenny Ostrom at [email protected].
