LPSCXXIV 1515 LARGE FLOOR-FRACTURED CRATERS AND ISOSTATIC CRATER MODIFICATION: IMPLICATIONS FOR LITHOSPHERIC THICKNESS ON VENUS. R.W. Schultz, Dept. of Geological Sciences, Brown Univ., Providence RI 02912 Introduction: Several of the largest craters on Venus, including Mead, Meitner and Isabella, exhibit well-developed floor fracture patterns combining a central set of radial features with a peripheral set of concentric fractures. This pattern strongly resembles the fracture patterns observed in the largest floor- fractured craters on the Moon (eg. Humboldt, Gauss, Petavius). Although most lunar floor-fractured craters apparently reflect crater modification by igneous intrusions and volcanism [I,2,3], we propose that the fractures in these larger craters represent domical flexure events in response to post-impact isostatic uplift. Since the extent of uplift and surface failure in this model depends on both the size of the basin cavity and the local lithospheric thickness, this interpretation also provides a means for constraining lithospheric thicknesses on Venus. Based on the apparent onset diameter of isostatic crater modification, we derive lithospheric thickness estimates for the Moon of -80-100 km, and for Venus of -50-70 km. Large Floor-fractured Craters: As noted in a companion abstract [4], ten craters on Venus show patterns of concentric or polygonal fractures resembling failure patterns observed in lunar floor-fractured craters. These craters are comparable in size (-20-90 km) to most of the lunar examples, and three craters in particular contain well-defined, moat-like structures around a scarp-bounded central floor plate identical to features observed in the most extensively modified craters on the Moon [5]. -

ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: LABORING IN STONE: THE URBANIZATION OF CAPITAL IN THE QUARRY TOWN OF TEXAS, MARYLAND, AND ITS EFFECTS, 1840 TO 1940 Adam D. Fracchia, Doctor of Philosophy, 2014 Dissertation directed by: Professor Stephen A. Brighton Department of Anthropology Capitalism is founded on the unequal relationship between capital and labor, a relationship that along with the expansion and accumulation of capital and labor power has come to influence everyday life and values. The quarry town of Texas, in Baltimore County, Maryland, offers an opportunity to explore this important relationship between labor and capital. Established in the mid-nineteenth century to quarry and burn limestone at a time of expanding industry and an expanding nation. The town was created to house the workers, primarily Irish immigrants and later African Americans hired to toil in this hazardous industry, and a community was formed and eventually destroyed. This study examines the logic and process of capitalism, drawing on David Harvey’s theoretization of the urbanization of capital to understand how life at Texas was influenced by capitalism. The role of and changes to the quarry industry’s operations are studied along with their impact on life in Texas and how industry aligned social relations in town to facilitate capitalism through the manipulation of material culture and space. Through an analysis of the built landscape and artifacts of everyday life, such as ceramic tableware and smoking pipes, in their social context, daily interactions can be studied within a wider framework and scale. Studying Texas in this manner demonstrates the utility and necessity of using a totalizing approach, as suggested by Harvey, to examine capitalism in historical archaeology. -

They can be seen as public places where large concentrations of people can participate in religious activities, as meeting points during pilgrimages on specific dates in the ritual calendar, as well as places to celebrate commemorative politic or ideological acts and also as fields for tianguis or periodic markets. Architecturally, these are wide, open areas with room to accommodate multitudes of people. Some are open while others are enclosed by walls and flanked by long low structures, generally stepped, together with low mounds; all of these structures had a public nature: ballcourts, ceremonial water reservoirs, platforms for dance or orations, raised platforms with poles carrying symbols, and a sequential placement of commemorative monuments, stelae and altars. This paper highlights a perfectly designed square plaza, formed by stands on three sides, open on one end, with three low mounds spaced along the open end, and a small central platform. Groups with these characteristics are scarce and have been referred to as “scenic complexes” or theatrical stages. In this work, other examples of this complex from the Lowland Maya area are discussed.
