Sri Rukmini Kalyanam is part of Dasama Skandam (10th canto or book) of great epic Maha Bhagavatham. Dasama Skanda of Maha Bhagavatam is mainly focused on Sri Krishna Leelas. Lord Krishna who is treated Paramatma himself (Krishnastu Bhagavan Swayam) incarnates among innocent people of Nandavraja. He shows many leelas that are pleasure to hear to devotees. Rukmini Devi represents the Jivatma which longs to attain the Paramatma and Lord Krishna is the Paramatma. The 5 brothers of Rukmini represent the 5 senses. These five senses always try to get us into worldly matters and away from God. When the quest for God is true, the Guru comes by Himself and takes the message of the devotee to the Lord. If the message is delivered by the Guru, the Lord Himself comes. Sri Rukmini Kalyanam is indeed the merger of the Jivatma into the Paramatma. In the Name of Krishna: The Cultural Landscape of a North Indian Pilgrimage Town A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Sugata Ray IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Frederick M. Asher, Advisor April 2012 © Sugata Ray 2012 Acknowledgements They say writing a dissertation is a lonely and arduous task. But, I am fortunate to have found friends, colleagues, and mentors who have inspired me to make this laborious task far from arduous. It was Frederick M. Asher, my advisor, who inspired me to turn to places where art historians do not usually venture. The temple city of Khajuraho is not just the exquisite 11th-century temples at the site. Rather, the 11th-century temples are part of a larger visuality that extends to contemporary civic monuments in the city center, Rick suggested in the first class that I took with him. I learnt to move across time and space. To understand modern Vrindavan, one would have to look at its Mughal past; to understand temple architecture, one would have to look for rebellions in the colonial archive. Catherine B. Asher gave me the gift of the Mughal world – a world that I only barely knew before I met her. Today, I speak of the Islamicate world of colonial Vrindavan. Cathy walked me through Mughal mosques, tombs, and gardens on many cold wintry days in Minneapolis and on a hot summer day in Sasaram, Bihar. The Islamicate Krishna in my dissertation thus came into being.

  • From Devaki to Yashoda
From Devaki to Yashoda: The Intra-authorial Mediation in Translating One's Own Plays Ramesh Panigrahi" When the translator (the creator of the TL text) and the author (the creator of the SL text) are rolled into a single organism, as in my case, the notion of heirarchization with regard to the creator and translator and Popovic's idea of four equivalences prescribed and searched for during translation are erased. As the nurturing mother (Yashoda) of my own SL text, I am compelled to go about with semantic consideration, circumlocution and transformations that do not alter the core meaning of my own original writing (my creative position metaphorised as Devaki). The TL rendering becomes a rewriting and veritably a new creation in the case of the author - translator. This leads to the dissolution of the idea of the 'correct' and 'invariant' translation which two notions seem to be even otherwise either outdated or irrelevant. One of the words for "translation" in my source language, Oriya, an Indo-Aryan language, is rupantar. It means 'change of form'. In Oriya, the Mahabharata of Sarala Das (1sth century) is accepted as an original writing even though there are innumerable interpolations of indigenised episodes. This puts paid to Eugene Nida's prescriptions for a 'correct' and 'invariant' version of translation. In a folk version of Ramayana, Sita is treated as Rama's sister in my state and in the Jagannath temple is the only place in India in which a sister is worshipped with her two brothers. Thus, my culture allows all sorts of variation and all variations are accepted as "correct" and adhered to religiously.

  • Secrets of Srimad Bhagavad Gita Revealed
Secrets of Srimad Bhagavad Gita Revealed Introduction The Bhagavad Gita, the greatest devotional book of Hinduism, has long been recognized as one of the world’s spiritual classics and a guide to all on the path of Truth. The land of the Vedas and the Upanishads – that is India. India has a rich culture of respecting the Father, Mother, Elders and Teachers. The influence of Western Culture and the glitz of Materialism is misleading the children of India and corrupting the society by compromising the values. This is an attempt to lead the people in the right direction. Let us read the mantra from Yajur Veda (36-24) and understand the deep meaning and spiritual significance it upholds. Let us live long. Without depending on anyone. I am deeply pained by the children over speeding for the thrill on the streets of India. The immaturity of some children is evident with their utter disregard to their self well-being when they forget that “Speed Thrills, But also Kills”. Some other children want to depend their entire lives on the hard work of their parents. Let us take Vedas as an example of how we need to live our lives. Let us make a firm resolve to lead Young India by example with the inspiration of Swami Vivekananda. Let us make a firm resolve to lead the Future generations of Young India with the inspiration provided by the teachings of Lord Krishna in Bhagavad Gita. Let us learn to take good care of ourselves. • Lord Krishna – Childhood Stories
Lord Krishna – Childhood Stories Lord Krishna‟s life is associated with a lot of interesting & instructive events. He is one of the most popular divine heroes. Here are a few interesting tales associated with Krishna‟s life: The Story of Krishna & Putana Kansa, the evil uncle of Krishna had told Putana-the female demon, to kill baby Krishna. Putana disguised herself as a cowherdess & went to Gokul. After killing many babies by feeding them with her poisoned milk, she entered Krishna‟ house. Krishna knew her real form . He sucked so hard that he extracted Putana‟s life along with the milk. Before dying ,Putana assumed her original form & died. The Gopis with Rohini and Yasoda came rushing to the spot and took up the child, which was playing fearlessly on the body of Putana who was freed from her sins as she had offered to give milk to the Lord. So no matter how powerful evil is, it always gets defeated by the Good. Kindergarten – Krishna Childhood Stories Page 1of 17 Overturning of the Cart The ceremony observed on the child being able to stand on his legs, and the birthday ceremony was observed together. There was a great feast at the house of Nanda. After completion of the bath, Yasoda found that her child closed His eyes in sleep and so she put Him to bed under a cart which contained vessels full of milk and curd. After some time, the child opened His eyes and cried for His milk. As Yasoda was busily engaged in receiving her guests, she did not hear Sri Krishna‟s cry.

  • 42. Consummation in Nanda-Nandana
Chapter 42. Consummation in Nanda-Nandana “Meanwhile, the seventh pregnancy came! And surprisingly, it was aborted in the seventh month! Should they inform Kamsa? If yes, how? They couldn’t find the answer. When Kamsa learned about this, he suspected that the sister was capable of some stratagem to deceive him, so he put her and her husband in a closely guarded prison.” The sage Suka started telling about the most glorious event, which revealed the reality of Krishna incarna- tion. Krishna is born to Devaki in prison “Devaki and Vasudeva, who spent their days in prison, were indistinguishable from mad people. They sat with unkempt hair, lean and lanky through want of appetite and the wherewithal to feed their bodies. They had no mind to eat or sleep. They were slowly consumed by grief over the children they had lost. When their prison life entered its second year, Devaki conceived for the eighth time! It was wondrous! What a transformation it brought about! The faces of Devaki and Vasudeva, which had drooped and dried up, suddenly blossomed like lotuses in full bloom. They shone with a strange splendour. “Their bodies, which were reduced to mere skin and bone, as if they had been dehydrated, took on flesh, be- came round and smooth, and shone with a charming golden hue. Devaki’s cell was fragrant with pleasing aromas. It cast a wondrous light and was filled with inexplicable music and the jingle of dancing feet. Amazing sights and sounds indeed! Devaki and Vasudeva became aware of these happenings but were afraid to inform Kamsa, lest he hack the womb into pieces in his vindictive frenzy.
