Selander and John K. Bouseman' Introduction The West Indies have never received attention from entomologists commensurate with their great biogeographical interest. Descriptions of West Indian species of Meloidae have appeared at irregular inter- vals since the fu'st species was described by Fabricius in 1781, but no attempt has been made to treat these beetles comprehensively or to relate them to the beetle fauna of the American mainland. We there- fore feel that the present report will be valuable, for by bringing together all available information on the Meloidae of the West Indies, the report will not only serve as a means of identifying the species of the islands but will perhaps also stimulate more widespread interest in the meloid fauna, so that the process of studying and interpreting it will be accelerated. For the purpose of this report the West Indies are defined as includ- ing the Bahama Islands, the Greater Antilles, and the Lesser Antilles as far south as Grenada. Currently, 66 species are recorded from China, of which two species, Colletes linzhiensis sp. nov. and C. spinatus sp. nov., are described as new. En este estudio se clarifica el estatus taxonómico y la distribución geográfica de Apalus cinctus (Pic, 1896), especie mediterránea que se integra en el grupo de Apalus bimaculatus (Linnaeus, 1760). Apalus cinctus sólo se conocía por su descripción original a partir de algu- nas localidades norteafricanas y se consideraba como un taxon con estatus taxonómico incierto. El examen de fotografías detalladas del tipo de Apalus cinctus y el estudio de nuevo material capturado recientemente nos permite discutir su posición taxonómica y definir sus caracteres diagnósticos, validando su estatus específico. La captura u observación de ejem- plares asignables a Apalus cinctus en España continental (León, Zamora y Huesca), amplía considerablemente la distribución de la especie y permite incluirla dentro de la Fauna Europea. Se cuestiona la presencia de Apalus bimaculatus en la Península Ibérica y en el Norte de África, donde posiblemente sea reemplazada por A. cinctus. Here we provide a comprehensive dated phylogeny for Colletinae Colletes based on Bayesian and maximum likelihood-based analyses of DNA sequence data of six loci: 28S rDNA, Dated phylogeny cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1, elongation factor-1α copy F2, long-wavelength rhodopsin, RNA polymerase II Geodispersal and wingless. In total, our multilocus matrix consists of 4824 aligned base pairs for 143 species, including 112 Historical biogeography Colletes species plus 31 outgroups (one stenotritid and a diverse array of colletids representing all subfamilies). Systematics Overall, analyses of each of the six single-locus datasets resulted in poorly resolved consensus trees with con- flicting phylogenetic signal. However, our analyses of the multilocus matrix provided strong support forthe monophyly of Colletes and show that it can be subdivided into five major clades. The implications of our phy- logenetic results for future attempts at infrageneric classification for the Colletes of the world are discussed. -

ISSN 0013-886x. In Sweden Apalus bimaculatus has mainly been reported from the area around lake Mäla- ren in south-eastern Sweden. In order to assess its current status in the area, a survey in the provinces of Södermanland and southern Uppland was conducted. The preferred habitat of the host species Colletes cunicularius (Hymenoptera, Colletidae) consists of areas with sand, mostly south-facing slopes, with Salix in the vicinity. During the springs of 2003 and 2004 suitable sites were visited during the short time when the adults are visible above ground. Apalus bimaculatus was spotted in 30 sites situated in 23 5x5 km squares along the eskers in the area. It is crucial to be out early in the season (March to early April), prefera- bly in sunny weather when the temperature is above zero degrees Celsius, in order to detect the species. The largest population numbered more than 300 individuals. A future decline can be anticipated when sites are shaded out as old gravel pits are reforested, and the trend is currently towards fewer and larger pits, which often lack the suitable habitats. -

Marschalek Under the supervision of Professor Daniel K. Young At the University of Wisconsin-Madison Meloids are commonly referred to as “blister beetles” due to the toxin (cantharidin) they possess which can cause blistering of human skin. Several meloid species have long histories of negatively impacting agriculture resulting from large foraging aggregations and negatively impacting livestock health. Even with these important and interesting aspects, little is known about these beetles in their natural habitats. There are recent faunistic surveys of selected insect taxa in Wisconsin but a formal investigation of Meloidae is lacking. The blister beetle fauna of several states has been published, but this survey represents the first in the Midwestern United States. This study provides a comprehensive list of all meloid species documented from Wisconsin, as well as taxonomic keys and summaries for each species (species pages) which includes taxonomy, description, and natural history. During this survey, 28 species in seven genera were documented in Wisconsin, with 10 species considered new state records.
