3UHVLGHQW·V0HVVDJH Greetings to all CVHA members! Hopefully you were able to do some over the holidays. A few of us had an impromptu idea for driving on

New Year's Day, thanks to Phyllis

Rumley. We met at Verde View Farm and drove through the nearby orange orchards and along the Fancher Creek canal. Phyllis led the way with her intrepid Welsh Cob, Ty, followed by

Lois Patten and her Welsh Pony,

Flower. Kathleen Rose and her intrepid mini, Romeo, brought up a veryclose rear - he was a real trooper. Passengers were Sharon Booth, and Brent Patten on

Ty's marathon , and Dee Douglas with Lois in her Road Cart. It seemed as if we trotted undisturbed for miles. There were no issues encountered and everyone had a wonderful time, including a sip of the bubbly afterward. If anyone would like to be on a list of impromptu invitees to such a drive, please let me or Phyllis know. We also had a chance to utilize our new Fresno County Park memberships this weekend. Phyllis is preparing for moving up to Preliminary Level for the CDE season, by breaking in her new navigator Kathleen. (I think Kathleen's eyes were twice as large after Phyllis cantered several times through the big water hazard!) I took my Norwegian Fjord pony, Buttercup, out for her first long trot since being sick. Everything went smoothly, no glitches or conflicts with the handful of eventers who were out there training. (They kept their distance from us!) We do need to let John Marshall know ahead of time that we will be going out there. Remember it costs $45 every time you go out. If others are interested in membership there, please contact me or Phyllis. It was wonderful to be back at our beloved "Ram Tap".

Wishing you many happy hours "on the box" in 2014!

President’s Message

We are excited about the coming year's schedule of activities! We have several events lined up out at the

Fresno County Horse Park, including several club playdays, and at least one actual competitive event, in the Fall. Our monthly fun shows out at Verde View Farm in

Sanger, will continue to happen, thanks to the hard work of Phyllis Rumley. The club meeting on Feb 5 was well attended, including several new members, so looks like everyone is ready to get out and drive. Please check the following schedule of activities in the newsletter, which is compiled by Kristi Knight. Thank you Kristi!

Board Members Present: Sharon Booth, Kim Johnson, Brent Patton, & Kathy Sidman Absent: Bernice Strange Sharon called the meeting to order at 6:45 p.m. The board meeting was waived. Sharon began the meeting by presenting Phyllis with a “Thank You” bottle of wine for her efforts in putting on the WKRP shows. She then passed around the 2014 activity schedule. She noted we were unable to get the Fresno County Horse Park in the spring, but have a 6/28 playday, also 9/6 and 11/22 & 11/23 dates reserved. It is hoped to coordinate a clinic with Drew Callahan in November. It was suggested ha ving an HDT instead of a playday, and Brent suggested having a hazard tournament, which could be based on fastest or optimum time. Sharon noted she will be checking with the San Joaquin Parkway in regards to using the River Center property for a Spring Drive. Treasurer Report: Brent stated the current balance is $6810.00, and tomorrow he will be depositing $360.00 in membership dues bring the balance to $7170.00. He also noted that we are lacking in membership participation to have a quorum for voting purposes. He suggested emailing the agenda items. Sharon is going to begin the process of gathering the information to prepare a new budget.

Old Business: Kathy said she is still selling the MacAfee tack from time to time, with the proceeds going to the club. There are still two nice surcingles left. There are also some small sheets and an incomplete harness as well. New Business: Jackie Mills said that the McKee’s would like to coordinate their events with ours. They have a quadrille practice on the second Saturday of each month, with free driving. They would like to coordinate with our WKRP shows to promote driving. Perhaps safety checks was an idea. Contact Jackie or Denise Cuendette with any ideas. Sharon then announced the resignation as secretary from Kim due to her work schedule. After discussion Sallie stated she would assume the role. Sharon made a motion for Sallie to become secretary, with a second by Kathy, and the motion passed unanimously. The website was next on the agenda and Sharon stated her son will be our webmaster. Allyn will be acknowledged and thanked for all of her wonderful service in the next newsletter. Kim made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 7:45 p .m., seconded by Kathy and passed unanimously.

Respectfully submitted by: Kim Johnson , Secretary Update on Diana Cooley: Diana had a carriage driving accident late last year and

was hospitalized for several weeks but is back home now

after a couple of surgeries and physical therapy.

Welcome Home Diana!

Verde View Driving Show Spring Show

Off to a Good Start!

By Phyllis Rumley

March 1st was the first driving show at Verde View Farm. We had 9 entries in our

Continuous Drive. Starting at 9:00am with judge Ronda McPherson from Lake View Terrace, a Long listed Advanced Level driver who donated her time to help us out.

We first had a 30 minute judge to driver talk and explain what the judge would like to see. After that the drivers followed me around the course and I explained the course and obstacles as we came across each of the three. Then the drivers had time to walk the cones course at their leisure. First drive started at 10:30 so no one was rushed to hitch. After all the drivers had driven dressage, marathon, and cones we all unhitched

and sat down for lunch. st Ponies and horses were combined, results were: Dressage 1 Lois Patten, 2nd Kelly Moore, 3rd Kim Johnson, 4th Sharon Booth, 5th Kathy Sidman

California Driver Wins Second

Consecutive USEF National Single

Horse Driving Championship

by Helen Murray

The 2014 USEF National Single Horse Driving Championship came to an exciting conclusion on Sunday in the cones phase of the Southern Pines CDE held in Raeford, North Carolina. On another beautiful day at the Carolina Horse Park, 2013 Champion, Leslie Berndl, held her nerve to drive a near flawless effprt over Richard Nicoll’s cones course to retain the title.

Berndl (Newcastle, Calif.) and 13-year-old KWPN gelding Uminco, were the final competitors to tackle the cones course in the championship, finishing within the time allowed and only dislodging two balls to add six points to their overall score. They finished on a total of 119.67 on weekend that surpassed expectation for the World Championship veteran. "It was amazing, just amazing," said the back-to- back Champion of her time at the Southern Pines CDE.

Berndl spent the winter training and competing in Florida and came to the Carolina Horse Park with her sights firmly set on claiming the 2014 title.

"It doesn't feel real," said of Berndl of winning the USEF National Single Horse Driving Championship for the second time. Earning Reserve Champion honors was Suzy Stafford (Wilmington, Del.) and PVF Peace of Mind on a score of 122.43. The 2011 FEI World Driving Championships for Combined Ponies

Individual Silver medalist and her own seven-year-old Morgan mare added 2.8 time faults and three penalties for a single ball down on the cones course to finish less three points behind Berndl. Finishing in overall third place was Donna Crookston (Saltsburg, Pa.) and her own 18-year-old Morgan gelding RG Cowboy's Black Cadillac on score of 140, rising one place after the marathon as the only entry to drive double clear on the cones course in the Single Horse division.

MINUTES FOR THE CVHA MEETING APRIL 2, 2014 Brent stated he was picking up the mail and we received the February issue of the Whip. Sallie is working on a Google account to store the club’s important documents that are safe to have on the net such as bylaws, minutes, past newsletters, event forms, lists for events, etc. Sharon would like Brent to make an actual Profit &Loss with a budget and a proposed budget for 2014 Lois still needs to get insurance for their property. We discussed last year’s deposits and expenditures before Brent took over and Sharon and Brent will go over them together. Also discussed was how the ads in the newsletters be paid for. Kathy Sidman will email this issue to Kristi to see if there is a way to fix the problem of not tracking payments. The website is up and running thanks to Graham but still has a few mistakes. Let Sharon know if noticed. The website also needs an update of the gallery. Brent will send out an email about Skyla Cothran for remembrances to be put in. Lois will send Jackie a card for the club in sympathy for the loss of her husband. Lois talked about using the e-mail list we have now for the Google act contact list. Lois also motioned we sponsor the Reinsmanship class at Twin Rivers , 2nded by Sallie, approved by unanimous vote. Kathy Sidman gave a list of the sale of McAfee tack, Kathleen Rose: Surcingle $25; Kathy Sidman: $25 72”Baker Blanket, Russet reins $10; Paula Lang: Kicking strap $25, driving $25, Baker blanket 76” $25. President’s Message: COULD IT BE POSSIBLE THAT THE RAM TAP CDE WILL RETURN???? Thanks to the interest of Leslie Kennard in Lindsay and Gary Gang of Chino Valley, AZ, we are testing the waters to see if there is enough interest on the part of club members of CVHA, Northern California Driving Club, Brass Oak Driving Society, Antique Carriage Club, Whip’r Snapper Driving Society, Peninsula Carriage Driving Club, Western States Draft and Driving Association and anyone else to not only attend as competitors, but also volunteer to help out on show days. Fresno County Horse Park is looking really good these days. Many improvements have been made, and there is always water in the hazards. Owner John Marshall has been very welcoming to us, and we are coexisting well with the ridden eventers. We are thinking about starting out with a 2 day HDT, to get our feet wet. We will have to work out the dates, but we’re looking at Spring 2015. PLEASE SEND ME AN E-MAIL WITH YOUR COMMENTS AND LEVEL OF INTEREST IN HELPING OUT. WE ALL KNOW THAT OUR SPORTING EVENTS REQUIRE A LOT OF VOLUNTEERS. I’M HOPING WE COULD DESIGN A FORMAT WHICH WOULD ALLOW EVERYONE TO DRIVE, AS WELL AS HELP MAN THE REQUIRED POSTS:

Sharon Booth [email protected] and Phyllis Rumley: [email protected] Spring Fling Continuous Drive at Whiffletree Ranch

By Sallie Phillips The Spring Fling Continuous Drive was held at the Whiffletree Ranch in Madera on March 29, 2014. The weather was wonderful and so were the hosts, Jack and Marie McKee. Coffee, rolls, and breakfast muffins were waiting for early risers. The course was well marked and though tight in places it was very fun for me with my novice Morgan, Danny. It had challenges with a few places on downhill turns that required my horse to slow to a walk, which he figured out very well. The dressage was relaxing with Denise Cuendett as judge in the wonderful arena at the ranch. The holding area was a little tight spaced with several minis, a draft horse, and one horse doing dressage and another doing the hazards and cones. The hazards were very open for beginners, but of course there were a few tricky gate designs that Jack put in. Cones were challenging with a bridge, water and many tighter turns. Gene Hagberg ran the hazards and cones and did a great job with keeping people on track and the whole event went very smoothly. I want to thank all of the volunteers that made it possible for this event to happen. Here are some of the awards: Bernice Strange won the Overall award. Congratulations! Gretchen Lee won overall Pony Training Champion with a very well warmed up pony. Great job! Sharon Booth was 3rd in pony. Sallie Phillips won 1st in Training horse (as the only one in her class), and was very happy with Danny’s first outing at an event like this. Brent and Lois Patten were best on pace at only 2 seconds off the exact time. Wow! Kathy Sidman won Pony Division Cones. She just loves that horse! Kelly Moore and the Langs were also there.

More Spring Fling Action!

Continuous Drive at Twin Rivers

By Phyllis Rumley Fun was had by all. CVHA had a very large turnout of competitors at the drive. Lois Patten, Kathy Sidman, Bernice

Strange, Holly Breckenridge, Sharon

Booth, Cheryl Thompson and Phyllis

Rumley all came to drive and play. Kathleen Rose came along to navigate for Phyllis and Brent Patten navigated for his wife Lois.

Everyone arrived Friday and set up camp, the course walk was at 6pm and we all had fun seeing the layout with a very large herd of sheep with very large dogs protecting them. We all were a little worried about the sheep but Linda Fairbanks, our great organizer, was on it and talked to the shepherd about the carriage horses.

Saturday dawned warm but nice. Those that drove in the morning volunteered in the afternoon and vice versa. Marathon pace 1 was a 2Km go with a wonderful water hazard that everyone had fun in. Then you came back in and drove the Super Reinsmanship Test 1 for Judge Diane Kastama who was tough, fair and consistent. After your test you went out again on Marathon Pace 2 which was 2.2Km with another hazard. After this course you came back in and ran a very difficult cones course, set at

40cm or 35cm. The whole drive was a real test coming in off both Pace marathons as close to the time as possible it was a real challenge and the Reinsmanship test done between marathons was a good test to see if your horse would come down and be obedient. CVHA had many very obedient horses and ponies. We took home most of the blue ribbons and the top awards. Lois Patten was 1st Prelim Pony, Overall Pony. Kathy st rd st Sidman 1 Training Pony, Sharon Booth 3 Training Pony. Bernice Strange 1 VSE st T raining (Saturday). Holly Breckenridge 1 VSE Training(Sunday). Cheryl Thompson 2nd Training Horse. Phyllis Rumley 1st Prelim Horse and Overall Horse. Most of these awards were won both days. So as a group CVHA was very successful and we had the most fun. Let’s plan this trip again. Congratulations CVHA drivers!

we all got started. Harness Association June’s show had 2 cones courses - Scurry Obstacle Course and Fault & Out. P.O Box 1192 Both courses were timed with Scurry Clovis, CA 93613 Obstacles being a choose your own course. And Fault & Out is a 2 minute

A Little Pack Mule Starts a Big Driving Adventure! By Kelley Jo Locke Cupid was an unexpected surprise to breeder, trainer Don Forsythe on May 27, 1999. (Coincidentally, my dad's birthday is May 27th.) He had bred his daughter’s mare, Fancy, and knew she was pregnant. The ultrasound had shown no sign of twins. Upon birth, as he was imprinting Cupid's brother Dash, he noticed Fancy giving birth to a second baby mule. Don bonded so closely to the adorable twins, he decided to keep them as his personal riding and pack mules for hunting trips into Hell's Canyon along the Snake River. They were celebrities at all the local parades. In 1996 he began to lose his sight. He knew there would come a day when he would have to rehome the twins so that they could continue to bring joy to someone's life. In March of 2013, that person became me. After unsuccessfully searching for a replacement mule in western Oregon, I was put into contact with Don. A friend flew me up to Ontario, Oregon in his experimental plane. What an adventure. A month later I was meeting Don, his driver and the twins in Winnemuca Nevada to bring them home. Cupid is no longer a little pack mule that follows her big brother around. She is now a driving mule and seems to love her new job and independence. Thanks to the patient training of Leeanne Lloyd Mattos, Cupid, now fifteen years old, is competing at mule shows. Her first mule show was the 45th Bishop Mule Days Celebration, May 19-24 this year. Rookie owner mistakes led Cupid to be signed up in the wrong division as her owner, me, missed the driver’s meeting! Cupid was happy to compete with Leeanne as her driver against the big mules, I don't think she realized there was a difference. After placing 10th in her first class, a Pleasure Driving class of 10, she went on to improve to a 9th in Drive & Ride, 7th in Gambler's Choice Trail and 3rd in ! She is a quick study. As a last minute opportunity, Cupid entered in Youth Pleasure and Walk/Trot and was ridden by 7 year Angelina. The team earned 1st places in both classes. th On June 13th-15 this year, Cupid and Leeanne competed at the Kernville Mule and Donkey Days. There Cupid competed in Pleasure Driving Working Mule 3rd, Pleasure Driving Reinmanship 1st and Gambler's Choice Trail 2nd. The class sizes were smaller but was still very competitive. Cupid & her under saddle brother have future Mule Show plans for the year. They include the Rancho Murieta Mule Classic and One Moore Mule Show, in August and September. We have been fortunate to participate in play days, clinics, events and shows with some of the nicest of people and mules, horses & ponies. One team includes fellow club members Kelly Moore and her mule Cooper! What fun we are having. We hope to not have too many more schedule conflicts so that Cupid can enjoy some time at the driving events with the club.

MINUTES OF CVHA GENERAL MEETING JUNE 7, 2014 Board Members present: Sharon Booth, president; Kathy Sidman, vice president; Brent Patten, treasurer; Bernice Strange, member-at-large. Meeting was called to order at 11:30 at Verde View Ranch. The sole item on the agenda was the proposed CARRIAGE DRIVING EVENT at Fresno County Horse Park (aka Ram Tap) in Spring 2015. Based on availability of Fresno County Horse Park, and efforts to coordinate with other known events elsewhere in the Pacific Region, etc., it was agreed to plan for 4/11 - 12/2015. Those present expressed interest in a 2-day format, to see if we can muster the number of volunteers needed to put on an HDT. Discussion also centered on a format which would require drivers to also volunteer one of the

2 days. This has been done with success by other clubs. We will need to insure a group effort to try to enable organizers to also get to drive. We agreed this is a high priority in order to minimize organizer/volunteer burn-out. It was suggested that we ask for the volunteer help from the riding members of FCHP. In return for volunteering at some of their events (Sharon Booth did this one Saturday and received generous compensation in the form of FCHP "dollars" to be used for day fees out at the Horse Park.) A motion by Sharon Booth was made to seek out a committee to proceed planning the HDT was seconded by Brent Patten, and approved by all present. New Business: Sharon suggested that the club pay part of the FCHP membership of club members, to promote participation at club events at the Park. This was discussed and concerns were aired that this might prove a drain on club finances. Sharon made a motion that the club pay $10 toward the FCHP membership of club members joining between now and the end of the year. This was seconded by Kathy Sidman, and all present voted aye. The board will continue to explore possible strategies to reduce the expense of the park for drivers, perhaps a club membership.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:10. Next meeting will be August 6, location to be determined. Respectfully submitted by Sharon Booth, President

Making Lemons into Lemonade By Melinda Takeuchi In response to our ever-faithful editor Kristi’s request for news I am prompted to share my recent experience at the Vineyard Classic CDE. I hadn’t been planning to go, but since Shelley Chavoor sent out a poignant plea to the various clubs, I considered my options. To take a running start on the subject: I seem to have been flying against a strong headwind horse-wise for the last two years; have been sidelined from CDEs. My Friesian Girlz are NOT made for this sport; it is depressing to have to keep nagging them on Marathon when their favorite gait is so obviously “whoa.” A hip replacement slowed things down too. Last year Gerard Paagman found me a stunning unregistered chestnut

Dutch Harness Horse named Ringo, competed in pairs and 4’s in Holland by Gerard’s friend Edwin van der

Graaf. For sale only because “Edwin has switched to driving black horses.” I’m afraid the trip over must have fried Ringo’s brain; he arrived a nervous wreck. Nonetheless I really enjoyed driving him – such power and energy after those lazy Girlz -- until, after I’d had him 6 months, he suddenly took off in my arena, flipped the carriage, and landed me in the ER with a broken back. My very first accident! It made me realize that daredevil -ism is not appropriate for someone on the eve of turning 70. Not wanting to give up on Ringo, I searched for a pairmate (Hardy is probably right in saying the accident wouldn’t have happened if Ringo had had a companion). I found what looked like the perfect match, a DHH mare named Red Raven, driven in Larry Denny’s team at WEG. To avoid a repeat performance of the Ringo debacle, I sent Ringo and Raven to Merrie Morgan’s. After operation and accident I realized that it would take a long time to regain physical strength and the firm hand that these big hot horses require. Hitching Ringo and Raven did not go well, so that plan has been shelved. Raven came home to me from Merrie’s at the beginning of this last March, right smack in the middle of a rainy period. The following week (immediately upon turning 70) I managed to break 2 toes getting out of the bathtub. Because walking in the cast was awkward, I added insult to injury by tripping in the mud on a rut and bruising the busted tailbone from the Ringo accident less than a week later. I literally could not sit on a carriage for the next 2 weeks. So I never had much chance to get to know Raven before deciding whether to enter Vineyard. She certainly is a hottie -- high-strung, pissy, and short-fused, but seasoned, sensible, generous, and talented. You never know how a horse that’s used to being in multiples will behave singly under the stress of an event, and with bum toes and tailbone, I wasn’t eager to find out. I tried pairing her with the more athletic of the Friesian mares, Giraffe, who had been recovering from a ligament injury. They got along splendidly. I decided to take the pair, with the Friesian as the baby-sitter, and go lightly in Training. The Vineyard TD accorded me handicapped status (the doctor had given me one of those red CA Disabled Driver stickers) cuz walking was difficult. The New Girlz were driven only about 12 times together total. I had practiced with both the marathon vehicle/synthetic harness and the dressage vehicle/leather harness, but didn’t notice till I got around to cleaning up the horses after loading the trailer the night before departure that Raven had a touchy inflamed spot on her shoulder from one of the harnesses. These chestnuts! This has never happened with the thicker-skinned Friesians. Exhausted and demoralized, I Continued on next page… debated scratching. Then I remembered the full-collar harness set I’d bought from Hardy and tried it to see if it fit (by now it was dark). It did, and it didn’t rub directly on Raven’s sore spot. So off we went to Woodland the following morning intending to use a style of collar I’d never even driven the horse in!

Dressage had some surprisingly good points, although Raven had such a fit of head-shaking and jigging I thought she might get out of control at times. Apparently the discomfort in her shoulder combined with

Giraffe’s shirking infuriated her. By the next day’s Marathon I could use a well-padded breastcollar on her.

Marathon had its own challenges: lazy Giraffe turned into a monster and Raven thought she was back at WEG. The Girlz got so strong on the trot section I had to pull them up a couple of times, make them stand, and sort things out. My fingers got so numb from all the pulling I actually dropped my whip. They were so het up I worried that I would not be able to steer through the hazards (I’d never driven a hazard with them until the event). I needed to take it as slow as possible because of Giraffe’s lack of condition. We managed to finish without incident. Ironically we won “Best Conditioned” award for Marathon. The valiant Raven had done most of the pulling! Sunday – our first whack at a Cones course. It was the ride of my life! After 2 days The Girlz figured out how to work as a pair. Even with the blasting wind they were in the palm of my hand. They could lengthen, collect, speed up, slow down, and turn in unison with minimal cues. The zigzag was particularly challenging for these huge horses (Giraffie is 17.1 hh) – the last element D was our only knockdown. Raven even hopped sideways at Cone 8 to keep from hitting it. On the homestretch I couldn’t resist giving the reins and letting them strut out, as they were so obviously begging to do. It was like flying on a magic carpet. The thrill put the busted toes, painful tailbone (I was sitting on a foam donut the whole time), the harness crisis, the crummy Dressage, and the near runaways on Marathon Section A into perspective. Euphoria is an incomparable analgesic! A humorous touch was when my “hubbygator” decided my hat was about to fall off, tried to secure it, and ended up pushing it down over my eyes, blinding me as we entered the first set of cones. Hardy saw the video of my Cones run http://www.rideonvideo.net/watch.php?vid=993d46b64 and (after chiding me for not securing the buckle ends of the flapping traces) marveled at how 2 horses of such different breeds could work so well together. He posted a note to that effect on the Pairs List and the CD-L. As a result, my Cones run now has almost 1000 views! I’ve made so many new e-friends and heard so many wonderful stories in the process. And I’ve learned that there is still life on the box seat after 70. In fact it just keeps getting better and better! Let’s raise a glass of fresh lemonade!

The FEI Para-Equestrian World Driving Para-Equestrian World Driving Championships Championships were held June 26-29th at Sandringham, England. It is the first time that these championships have been hosted in England and para-drivers from eight nations competed in a very fiercely fought contest for world supremacy. Four of the nations, including the USA, fielded a team of at least three competitors required for the “team medal” awards; the other countries were represented by individual competitors. Individual medals are awarded by “Grade” which is a classification by the FEI according to level of disability (with Grade I being more severely disabled than Grade II – usually wheelchair bound). Jeremiah Celebrates His 20th Birthday! By Lois Patten I don't know if Jeremiah would have preferred to pull his cart in 104 degree weather or climb to 11,000 feet to view California Goodale Pass. I know he doesn't look or act 20 years old. Once at a creek he and I were discussing his desire to stop and eat grass, when he felt my small English button spurs in his side, he proceeded to bow his back like the St Louis arch. To that he added hopping up and down in place. I proudly survived this and promptly gave him an attitude adjustment. Although I think he did enjoy the view at the pass. Approximately six years ago we rode over this pass and camped with friends at Grassy Lake on the east side of the Sierras. Although Jeremiah did not make this trip, we had previously used him as a pack mule. This was before Tamara Ketscher had lost husband Dave. When we had the privilege of buying Jeremiah I began to ride him on our summer trips to the the Sierras. In 2012, Jeremiah and I rode across Washington State with the John Wayne trail riders on their 200 mile annual trip. This ride follows the abandoned Milwaukee railroad. This historic railway used to run from Chicago to Seattle. Jeremiah and I rode the WHOLE way!, which earned us a White Scarf Award which is shown in the above picture.

Soon Jeremiah will be seen pulling the new cart that Brent made just for him.

Twin Rivers Continuous Drive

By Lois Patten

Thank you Linda Fairbanks and Brass Oaks for hosting such a nice event at Twin Rivers in San Miguel in May! It was our second year with our pair. Even though there were no other pairs, we improved much from last year. Thanks to my husband, Brent, an excellent groom, the pair and our turnout came together nicely. I'm sporting my new decorated helmet in the picture. I encourage

all who are interested to attend next year.

Harness Driving Demonstration at the California Draft Horse & Equipment Sale Tulare, CA October 31, 2014 at 5:00 PM Presented by the Central California Harness Association

Come learn about the competitive and recreational opportunities offered by the member clubs of the American Driving Society.

Competitive Harness Driving generally has three categories of competition:

 Combined Driving Events o Sometimes likened to a team triathlon, a Combined Driving

Event consists of three competitions – Dressage, Marathon, and Obstacle/Cones -- that are held over one, two, or three days. The sport is intended to showcase the versatility, training and talents of both horse and driver. Classes and Divisions are based on experience, size, and the number of animals hitched.  Pleasure Driving Events o Pleasure Driving is show ring competition. Horses and/or ponies are hitched to antique vehicles or replicas. Classes or divisions are based on the animal (pony, mule, draft, VSE), the

driver, and/or the experience of horse or driver and the number of animals hitched.  Recreational Driving Events o Sometimes referred to as “Club” Driving event where the organizer of a Driving club puts on an event made up of fun activities that can be as simple as a “Picnic Drive,” or as complex as a “scurry.” All turnouts are welcome and encouraged. Members of the Central Valley Harness Association will demonstrate three elements that are most common to the various categories of competition; Driven Dressage, Marathon Hazards, and Obstacle/Cones . The informational showing will feature VSEs, Ponies, Horses, Mules, and Drafts. Please come and learn!

August/September 2014

By Leslie Kennard The Golden State CDE was held August 29-31,

Golden State CDE 2014 at Sargent Equestrian Center. What a lovely venue for a CDE. If you haven't made it to Sargent's yet, you should call Jeanne Williams who is one of the co-owners and who manages the facility. They are located in Lodi and appear to be dedicated to driving. Look them up at

www.sargentequest.com. Gary Gang and I arrived early on Tuesday and had some fun first with Deb and Stan Packard. By the way, the Packards own Clay Station Horse Park which is another WONDERFUL place to have fun driving. The Packards are very accommodating and also have their own website at

www.claystationhorsepark.com The CDE was quite exciting for us because we had two other pairs in the preliminary horse class for Gary and "the boys" to compete against. There

would have been four total, but Diane Kastama had some bad luck in the trailer with one of her horses and had to withdraw. So Gary had some good competition, especially from Jennie Haas who without having had a bad cones day would have won. As it played out, Gary took first. Unfortunately, I had no competition in pony pairs

(preliminary), but I was quite happy with how "the girls" performed. Marathon day is always fun, but the hazards at Sargent's really are nice. I would like to say "thank you" to Patty Scholderer for being

my gator. As we went through Obstacle 6, I think I saw Phyllis Rumley. Couldn't stop to say “hello”,

though. In preliminary, the top three scores were Bridget Phillips from Arizona with 119.15, Stephanie Putnam with 119.162, and Drew Callahan (also from Arizona) with 120.11. Some very fine

driving. The only person with a better score was John (Benjy) Levy in Intermediate Single Horse with 108.49 overall. (How does he do that?) Now I am off to practice bending for my next event, Shady Oaks!

Pacific Region Driven Central Valley Dressage Festival By Sharon Booth The long-running ADS Pacific Region Driven Dressage Festival took place in Harness Association Santa Paula again this year, on July 12-13 at Geoff and Sharon Gee's ranch. It is a P.O Box 1192 wonderful venue where the arena footing has been much improved since last year's Clovis, CA 93613 show. The gentle climate of coastal

Southern California was ideal for a horse

BOARD OF DIRECTORS: show. Organizer Diane Kastama treated us to a visit from Larry Poulin, a very well PRESIDENT known trainer/competitor/judge from the Sharon Booth (559) 875-0125 East Coast. He was very demanding with [email protected] his scoring and held everyone to a high standard. VICE PRESIDENT At the end of the second day's drives, Membership, Roster Corrections and on the following day, Larry gave

Kathy Sidman (559) 322-1476 individual lessons. He is a patient and [email protected] effective instructor and even took the reins while we were driving, providing a very SECRETARY helpful demonstration of how to ask my Sallie Phillips (559) 855-3720 pony for more forward activity and a more [email protected] round frame. In fact, it was like having a

training session at the same time, because TREASURER Brent Patten (559) 298-4124 he showed my pony what we were asking [email protected] her to do, then when I took the reins back, she briefly thought that he was still in

charge, giving me the chance to experience MEMBER AT LARGE Bernice Strange what he was able to create with her. In the [email protected] end, while we clearly have a long way to go, I felt like he gave me new tools to work NEWSLETTER EDITOR with toward achieving better dressage Kristi Knight (559) 592-1635 skills. After my lesson I discovered I had 114 S. Anderson Rd. missed the awards ceremony, and was Exeter, CA 93221 shocked to learn that we had won best [email protected] training single pony!

The most fun class at the dressage CALENDAR OF EVENTS show has become the hat Celine Rickards (209) 966-4499 competition. Everyone brings their favorite [email protected] hats to show off with their horse or pony in Calendar of Events Website: hand. The audience are the judges and http://www.carriagedrivingessentials.com/calendar.php they rate competitors with their Central Valley Harness Association Website: applause. The class is a benefit for the http://www.centralvalleyharnessassociation.com U.S. Driving for the Disabled Team. Other awards went to Division Champions Bridget

McPherson for Intermediate level.

Driving in Montana By Leslie Kennard Silva My husband Ramon Silva and I could hardly wait to get away from the California heat and drought, but finally the day came to pack up our , carriage and our two Morgans (AKA the boys) for our trip to Montana. We stayed at the Townsend Ranch in Darby on the southwest side of the state where our friends Larry and Janice Townsend raise and train quality Quarter and Paint horses. We encountered refreshing weather, an amazing amount of water, and miles of picturesque driving. The Townsend Ranch is one of our favorite vacation spots. Larry is a true old-time cowboy and has many national, state, regional and world championships under his belt in, well, you name it… Rough Stock, Cow Horse, Team Sorting/Penning, Cow , and Mounted Shooting. He was a featured performer at the 2002 Olympics with his APHA stallion for 23 minutes doing reining and mounted shooting with NO bridle, NO neck rope and making NO contact with the horse by the use of his hands. Quite a guy, but during our two week visit he sure had fun driving the boys in my new Kutzmann carriage. With air bags and a comfy box, it was quite an upgrade from the metal seat he sat in 60 years ago to drive his father’s hay rake team. Below are a couple of photos of yours truly and Larry in the box, his wife Janice on one of their colts, and Ramon on that same APHA champion stud horse “Cowboy”. While we were there we also skipped up to Cardston, Alberta to see the Remington Carriage Museum. In past Driving Digest and other driving magazines, I have seen photos of some of the carriages at this museum, but WOW, you have no idea how amazing the collection is there. Hundreds of beautifully displayed vehicles from Park Drags and pony carts to fire engines and bull whacker wagons, and, of course, beautiful sleighs. I spent five hours in the museum and could have lasted another three, but I felt sorry for my husband. Well, the trip was a big success. I was really happy with the boys driving up and down grades, through forest with deer running alongside, cranes and wild turkeys flying overhead, and the occasional semi passing on a logging road. They are in great shape and ready for Sargent’s and Shady Oaks. See you there!

CVHA August Meeting Minutes Meeting called to order at 6:50 pm. Board members attending were Sharon Booth, Kathy Sidman, Sallie Phillips, Brent Patten Sharon discussed the website for the club. She has found a manager, Josh, who will charge only $400.00 for two sessions. One, to get site in order. 2nd, training for Sharon and all phone calls she needs for one month to be able to maintain the site. There was a brief discussion about a purchasing a computer for the club that had the technology to run the site. Brent felt that the programs change so fast it would not be practical and we need to use “the cloud” to work on the site. Motion made by Sharon that she engage Josh for the website at a cost of $400. Brent Patten seconded the motion, Sharon will also ask Josh if we need a laptop but for now we will hold off, Brent also said we need to as Kristi for updates she has for the newsletter. The Painted Turtle Event was discussed by Debbie Davis at her facility October 11. It is a fundraiser for the Painted Turtle foundation that uses the money to transport sick patients(such as leukemia and cancer liver transplants) and their people to camps specifically for them. There will be a dinner and silent auction. She is asking our club for transportation of the participants of the dinner and a possible demonstration. She said we can take over the exhibit, demo, and take people on our carriages. She stated the insurance is covered three different ways. She said she can make the site available for us to drive. Phyllis Rumley is heading up the playday at FCHP. She will do 2 hazards. Anyone who joined at last year’s November event will still have current membership until the end of 2014. Sharon is working on some of the details for the HDT at the FCHP in April of 2015. She will ask John the owner of the Park if we can get a charge to just rent the park instead of a per person fee so that we can set the fee to our competitors. She will also ask if the Hagbergs want to help. New venues were discussed: Dawn Rhinehart from Atwater suggested we contact West Side Horsemen’s (Club or Association?), Debbie Davis’s place, and Verde View. Anyone who would like to put one an event can organize it. Phyllis will no longer be organizing events at Verde View. The club’s trailer and poles are at Kathy Sidman’s. Fall Festival 2014 By Kristi Knight

The Fall Festival Pleasure Driving Show was held October 4 & 5, 2014 at Stan and Debbi

Packard’s Claystation Horse Park in Wilton. Although entries this year were low, it was attended by three drivers from the Central Valley, Holly Breckenridge, Bernice Strange and myself. Claystation is a fun place to drive, the Packards have built this facility specifically for carriage driving and there are permanent hazards, quiet dirt roads and FIVE real bridges on which to play (the largest, a covered bridge is pictured below left). Even though the weather was very hot, there are lots of shade trees, so it was easy to find a spot in the shade to park and watch the many classes happening in the grass arena (their Dressage Court for the HDTs and Summer Festival CDE). Let’s face it, although I do dress up and drive in the fancy roundy round classes in the main arena, I really attend to drive in the gaming classes, and I won all of the Pony Obstacle classes to earn the Gaming Pony Championship for the second year in a row with my mule Dixie.

Pictured above are Bernice Strange driving Cookie and Holly Breckenridge driving Moon.

CVHA October Board/General Meeting The board met at 6:45 on October 1, 2014. Board members present were Sharon Booth, Kathy Sidman, Brent Patten and Sallie Phillips. Bernice Strange was absent. Sharon and Kathy will be going off the board, both having served their three year terms. Bernice has missed several meetings. There was a short discussion on what the bylaws stated about members not attending meetings. Brent discussed the club insurance. The board approved paying insurance. Brent will call and ask about a change in the umbrella coverage. Everything will be the same, number of events, demos, meetings, 2 fundays, 4 activities, 1 booth.

Phyllis bought a karaoke machine for club use for $75. Kathy Sidman made the first motion to buy the machine, Lois seconded, board approved. Phyllis showed a flyer about former members, the True’s, vehicles being sold. Phyllis gave a report on the continuous drive at FCHP. Looking into possibility of renting the whole park for the weekend and see what he will charge. Phyllis is heading up the event. Ronda McPherson is judging and she is trying to get in touch with Diane Kastama for officiating also. Tulare Auction November, Phyllis is also heading that up. There will be driving demos on Friday, 4-5 PM. Phyllis has asked specific members to give the demos. There will be dressage, cones and hazards. She needs help setting up and taking down cones and changing between drivers. She suggested possible kids may help. There will be a booth at no cost next to NCDC. We want to include a list of trainers closer to our area. Two names were brought up: Dean Lacey and Roger Cleverly. Phyllis will also ask Dan not to spring tooth our demo arena. Phyl lis also reported on the Grass Valley Horse show. She said how wonderful it was and how beautiful and well cared for the horses were. And also how well trained they were. On Sunday Oct 26 there will be a practice session for the Tulare demo drivers. The Painted Turtle fundraiser will be attended by Lois, Sharon, Sallie and Kathy Sidman. For insurance this is not a club event though all members with appropriately trained horses were invited earlier. Holiday Activites: Sharon stated that the best time she had for our Christmas party was at the Patten’s. It was set for December 6, 2014, drive in AM and potluck early afternoon. Bring a pirate gift exchange to be stolen of less than $20 value. For the potluck, Brent will have the meat. Everyone else is asked to bring a side or dessert. Sharon reported on the website. It was decided to change publishing of newsletter to every two months after the meeting, approximately th the 15 . Dave Strobel volunteered to be a board member. Brent went to Denny’s in Clovis and said it was nice and available for Wednesday evenings. The board decided to wait to change it until the website was up and could update the new meeting place. Meeting was adjourned at 8 P.M. Respectfully submitted by

Roger Cleverly Driving Clinic By Sharon Booth The Roger Cleverly Clinic, put on by the Merced Horseman's Association. on Oct. 18, was attended by CVHA members Lois Patten, Sharon Booth and Dawn Rinehart. The attendees were of varied levels of experience, but all enjoyed and

learned a lot from Roger who has a very kind, but precise, approach to driving. There were some wonderful equines there including an adorable POA mare who took care of several people who drove her. Also there were several minis and Welsh ponies and a Connemara pony, all of which fall into Roger's area of interest which is British ponies. We are hoping to do some joint events with the MHA in the near future. Thank you to Shirley Kahlert for organizing this clinic!

By Phyllis Rumley The Draft Horse Classic is an annual event held at the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley in conjunction with the Harvest Fair during September. OK, this was a good idea when Barbara and I talked about it months before the actual date. But when you are dreaming you seem to gloss over the actual work involved. So as the date got closer and I volunteered to help Barbara get ready, who knew what she was getting me into. Well Barbara did. First of all you have to see and feel the size of the equipment that is used. Cleaning all the draft equipment was a 3 day job. Loading the equipment was another 2 day job. It took 5 people to get this all done. So after all the work we were off to the fair. 3 vehicles 2 trailers and 200 miles later we arrived and then a day of unloading. The fun really began Friday with a meeting and all the entries were briefed on the show. One of the main points given to the competitors was be kind to the public, welcome them and give them information about your horses. They are welcome in the barns. This made for a lot of fun during the fair. The public visited the barns throughout the day and up to a half hour before show time. Barbara’s horses Pete and Blazer turned out to be the Walmart greeters of our barn isle. The two geldings seemed to really like crowds and loved being petted and talked to each day. I really loved helping with the braiding and cleaning of horses. I wasn’t very good at the putting in the flowers or bows on but I got good at taking them out when everything was over. Barbara and Marvin Yoder showed cart class, pairs, tandem, unicorn, and team. It was so exciting and wonderful to help and watch. They were awesome and placed in the top 3 in every class. The hitch classes were in the evening under lights with huge crowds. The fairgrounds are lovely set in the mountains with pine trees. The whole experience is very special and truly awesome. The traditions that go with draft horse showing are a learning experience that everyone who loves horses should really experience up close. These gentle giants are as special as their owners say they are. I came away with love for all the draft breeds and of course a special love of the . One especially caught my heart and almost came home with me, Bold, he lived in our barn a few stalls down. All the big ones are special and I can see why their people love them. Everyone should put the Grass Valley Draft Horse Classic in their to-do list, it is a very special show and experience. I consider myself lucky to have been part of the Barbara Dotta Team.

Earl Smittcamp

Founder of Wawona Frozen

Foods in Clovis

Dies at 96

By Phyllis Rumley

Earl took up driving in his 80s and became a patron of CVHA. When I became the ADS Pacific

Regional rep he very graciously donated a very large sum of money to pay for the venue for the Meeting of the Minds that had been a cornerstone of California driving for many years. Earl enjoyed the 2005 and 2006 meeting we had at the Clovis Rodeo Grounds even turning one of the meetings into a Regional meeting with many ADS representatives showing up. Earl’s background was that of a man who start out as a milk man who turned 200 acres in

Clovis into a fruit-packing and processing empire. As Wawona Frozen Foods flourished the Smittcamps, Earl and his wife, Muriel helped to support students at Fresno State and countless other organizations across the central San Joaquin Valley. He was a visionary farmer that understood the benefits of value-added products, a successful businessman that knew how to make a company prosper with teamwork, a philanthropist that realized the value of supporting the community and its educational institutions. But most telling was the fact that he was a true family man and gentleman who was admired and loved by all who knew him. Earl would call me and invite me over to drive cones with him. First time I arrived we drove down the Clovis city walking paths he informed me they were supposed to be horse trails not just walking and bike trails so he would keep using them just that way. So off we went and drove around bikes and baby strollers. When we got to his cones course I couldn’t figure out how come

I didn’t have to pick up any of the cones he had driven over until he gave me a great big grin and said he had put the cones down with penny nails so they wouldn’t move. I couldn’t help but laugh it did save getting off and resetting. Most of the California drivers that participated in the 2005 and 2006 ADS meetings probably did not realize that the gentlemanly white haired man with the lovely grey Arab who loved to drive cones was the same man who had made the whole weekend possible but that is how he did things. His goal was to be the oldest driver out there and he was, as he was 88 at the time. But this unassuming senior just the love of driving his little Arab gelding on a cones course was extremely generous to all of us, a true example of giving back. Earl will be missed by us all. CVHA Founding Member Central Valley Will Be Missed By Brent Patten For most of us, this year had its share of “ups and downs”. Hi to all of you who were here and those of you who missed the Halloween Haunt at Whiffletree Ranch in Madera on October 25th and 26th. The weekend turned out great with 16 entries coming from as far as Marysville in the north to Costa Mesa in the south. Saturday morning featured 3 Hazards which were run for time. The competitors ran them at their leisure. Some did them all at once and some went out on the “Treasure Hunt” on the ranch trails between hazard runs. When all the dust had settled with some close times, the hazard winners for Mini/VSEs were: 1st place: Bernice Strange, 2nd place: Holly Breckenridge, 3rd place: Ann Washington, and 4th place: Larry Weaver. In the Pony/Horse division the winners were: 1st place: Lawrence Washington (beating his wife by only 16 seconds total for all 3 hazards) 2nd place: Linzy rd th Washington, 3 place: Lois Patten and 4 place: Sallie Phillips. When the morning was done we got to the “MAIN EVENT” at 2PM in the afternoon - the Costume and Turnout Pleasure Class. For those of you who have never been here for this event, you have missed seeing the most innovative costume makers and the most tolerant horses in the world. Denise Cuendett was st nd our judge for the Pleasure Class Awards. In the Mini/VSE divisi on: 1 place: Sue Jackson, 2 place: Bernice Strange, 3rd place: Karen Null, 4th place: Holly Breckenridge and 5th place: Marte Miller. For the Pony/Horse division Lawrence Washington once again beat his wife taking 1st place with Linzy Washington taking 2nd, 3rd place went to Gretchen Lee and 4th place to Kelly Moore. For the COSTUME section of the class all those present were given a ballot and voted on who their favorites were (in my opinion they are all winners!). Pictures do not do them justice! First place went to Sue Jackson and a very very tolerant mini, JayCee! Sue was dressed in a swim suit with a snorkel and goggles, the cart was made to look like a small boat on water with two bitten off human feet hanging over the sides. JayCee had a shark suit that covered her so that only her face stuck out between all of the shark teeth. In Second place, Gretchen Lee with her pony Pistachio who was made to look like a very large French Poodle. Gretchen was dressed as a

French Gentleman complete with hat and mustache. Karen Null and her mini, Johnny, were third with Johnny covered with piñata material. Johnny was very lucky we did not have a lot of kids with sticks!!! The costumes for the rest of the entries went from Linzy’s Angry Birds to Lawrence as Potty Boy on the mobile bathroom with magazines and TP, Bernice as Mountain Man and mini Indian, Holly as the Hula Lady to Marte Miller who came as Madam Marte and her wonderful Saloon girls. Marte wore a Red Satin dress with liquor bottles hanging across the back of the cart. Her mini, Rambo, wore a gamblers jacket with cards and a top hat. Kelly Moore was our Witch. You just have to be here to see it in person.

Drivers had from 9:30 AM until 4:00 PM to complete their “Treasure Hunt”, searching all the Ranch trails to find hidden gremlins to score points for lots of prizes to be given out during the great potluck dinner held Saturday evening on the patio. It was a great evening! On Sunday, after a Continental Breakfast on the Patio we had a Cones Competition for time and a Poker Run. Some drivers unfortunately were not able to join us on Sunday but those who stayed had a great time! In the Mini/VSE Cones, Mary Lou Mazzella driving the smoking hot mini, “Woody”, took 1st place. Ann Washington was 2nd followed by Sue Jackson in 3rd, Marte Miller was 4th and Karen Null took 5th. Cones st results for Ponies/Horses: 1 place was Linzy Washington who regained bragging rights over husband, Lawrence Washington, who finished 2nd. 3rd place went to Debbie Spencer and 4th place to Gretchen Lee. To finish out the day Mary Lou Mazzella came back and won the Mini/VSE Poker run. The Pony/Horse Poker run cash went to Debbie Spencer. All I can say is you missed out if you were not here!!! Remember everyone - the Second Saturday of each month - January thru November is free and open to everyone for driving at Whiffletree Ranch. I hope to see all of you here driving in the near future. Any information about “Second Saturday” or our coming Events can be found on the website at: www.whiffletreeranchcarriagedriving.com President-Elect’s Message WHAT I"M THANKFUL FOR: I'm thankful for all the CVHA club members who helped throughout the years in organizing events and the silent behind the scenes workers. Our club is smaller but still viable with 7 or 8 new members in the last couple of years. Phyllis and Mike Rumley gave drivers a place to practice and gather when she undertook organizing small play days at Verde View Stables. As President in 2014 Sharon Booth added energy and optimism. She was a breath of fresh air when she took on the job.

A big thank you to all the other facilities that gave us places and events to drive: Jack and Marie McKee's Whiffletree Ranch, Linda Fairbanks’ Overlook Driving Center, Jeanne Williams’ Sergeants Equestrian Center and Stan and Debbi Packard’s Clay Station Horse Park. My personal goals with my Welsh pair were met with the help of an awesome and hardworking husband who made it all possible. I realize that would not have been possible without having places for us all to drive at. We are fortunate that these places are available to train at, attend clinics and shows. Last of all, thank you to all the past and current board members for being the glue that keeps a club together. I'm looking forward to "jumping in" and organizing our upcoming event February 28th- March 1st. Hope to see you all there! Optimistically,

Lois Patten

CVHA Demos at Tulare Auction By Brent Patten The Central Valley Harness Association had a chance to demonstrate some of the activities and competitions related to the finer aspects of driving equine of all sizes and shapes at the Tulare Auction this last October. Phyllis Rumley, of the CVHA, and Dan Baumgardner of the California Draft Horse and

Equipment Sale, organized and scheduled a Friday afternoon event as an educational opportunity to display the driving skills associated with the 3 activities included in a Combined Driving Event (CDE). Demo nstrations were given in dressage, a cones course, and driving in “hazards”. Although many attending the auction may have had experience in various types of driving, the demonstrations gave more insight as to additional activities available to drivers of all levels with any type of horse or mule. Abbreviated courses were set up for each activity to give the audience an example of the objectives and reining skills needed to complete the tasks of each, with descriptions announced by the “Voice of the CVHA”, Mike Rumley. The CVHA drivers for this event included: Bernice Strange and Holly Breckenridge with their minis, Sharon Booth and her Connemara, Phyllis Rumley with her Welsh Cob, Cheryl Thompson and her Friesian, Kelly Moore and mule, Kathy Sidman with her Morgan, Barbara Dotta driving a pair, Lois Patten with her Welsh pony pair, and Leslie Kennard with her Morgan pair. The presentation was well attended, considering it was conducted Friday after the auction, with many questions generated afterward. Luckily members were able to finish the demonstration, take a drive through the auction yard facilities, with just time enough to put up harnesses and tuck animals in their stalls before the rains came that evening. CVHA December 6, 2014 Meeting Minutes Meeting called to order by Sharon Booth at 11:50. All board members were present. Old business: 1. Website is up and running and looks very good. Sharon still has to upload our newsletters and the member roster. 2. Sound system discussion on sale, keeping and storage of sound system. Still a very good system and if we put on a large event it works well. Even works well for smaller events. Board decided to keep it. It is bulky and needs climate controlled storage. Dave Strobel offered to store the system at his home where it will be climate controlled. New Business: 3. New venues for 2015. Sharon and Lois have investigated Debbie Davis facility and she has offered for us to come drive. She has driven before and is going to start again. Sharon & Lois will continue to look into it. WKRP was discussed again as a venue. It would need someone to organize and get help with set up and tear down. Bernice suggested that an organizer would only do one event so the work is spread out between many organizers. 4. Brent is still working out details of a portable dressage arena. Linda Fairbanks has offered us plastic chains for the corners and Brent is investigating 18 inch cones to put them on. He will continue getting information. The old equipment is too bulky to move and needs a flatbed trailer to move and that is why we are looking at other options. 5. Newbie fund- Sharon discussed developing a fund for brand new members that are just beginning to drive to encourage and support them as they start to drive. She will work on the details. Bernice and Brent both felt beginners’ clinics are very important for the club to run. Also regular clinics of all levels and different focus. (training, cones, etc.) are important for the club to run. 6. Report on continuous drive end of Feb and Mar 1. Lois. Entries should be sent out by Kristi by now. This is connected to Linda Fairbank’s event in spring. When this event attended and you enter Linda’s event, the fees will be less for the 2nd event. Entrants do not need to be a member of the Horse Park. 7. Elections. 2 positions on the board were open. We had three nominees: Dave Strobel, Lois Patten, Kathleen Rose. Voting was done by secret ballot. Dave Strobel and Lois Patten were elected. The board then elected the officers for the next year. President - Lois Patten, Vice President- Dave Strobel, Secretary-Sallie Phillips, Treasurer -Brent Patten, Member at Large-Bernice Strange. Signers on the club checking account will be: Treasurer - Brent Patten, and Secretary-Sallie Phillips.

TWO IDENTICAL EVENTS WITH SEPARATE PRIZES AND A COMBINED PRIZE AS WELL

First comes FRESNO HORSE PARK (known and loved in the past as RamTap) Drive 2K Pace, then a Dressage test, then another 2K Pace, then a Cones Course AND THEN… Do it all over the next day to see if you can improve. (You know you can!) AND THEN… Do the same kind of contest at another venue! (Twin Rivers)

All drivers, riders and navigators are required to volunteer as well

YOU MAY CHOOSE TO ENTER ONLY ONE EVENT OR GET A DISCOUNT FOR ENTERING BOTH EVENTS

What is a CONTINUOUS DRIVE? It is a competition wherein each turnout drives a 2k pace marathon, followed immediately by a Dressage test, followed immediately by another 2k pace marathon, followed immediately by a cones course. The total time to complete these things is about an hour. You will be scheduled to drive (or ride if entered as a rider) either in the morning or the afternoon and you and your groom/navigator (if you have one) will be expected to volunteer for about 2 hours during the part of the day you are not driving. There is plenty of social time built in too! Riders are invited to compete in pairs over the same course and with the same pace time calculation (trot).

Then why is it 2 days long? Because each turnout drives the same course on the second day to see if they can improve their score.

What do you mean by “two part series”? On May 23-24 the Brass Oak Driving Society will hold the same event at Twin Rivers in San Miguel and there are advantages to entering both events, such as a $50.00 discount on your total entry fees plus prizes for best combined score. Your discount will be applied when you enter the Brass Oak event.

What should I wear? Comfortable clothing. No laprobe or fancy hat required. Helmets are required.

House rules: All dogs on a leash in the stabling and parking areas. No dogs in the dining area except service dogs. Horses must be bridled with reins through turrets anytime the horse is between the shafts or attached to a carriage. Never leave a horse unattended while hitched. Never be inattentive or out of reach of a partially hitched horse. Helmets are required for anyone riding or driving. Safety check will be scheduled at the beginning of your warm up time each day. The courses are to be used at scheduled times only and only by drivers who are entered in the event.

What dressage test are you using? Training Level Test 4, Preliminary Level Test 3, Intermediate level Test 5

Who is the ? Central Valley is using Ronda McPherson, Advanced level driver and fun person. Brass Oak Driving Society is using Diane Kastama, world champion international competitor and fun person.

What is the Cancellation Policy? Full refund before closing date. Refund minus $25.00 office fee upon receipt of a veterinary letter regarding unsoundness of horse. Other reasons subject to Organizer discretion.
