    The French, English and a Fish: How They Transformed the Island of Newfoundland, 1696-1713 by Jacquelyn Irene-Rose George A Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts Approved April 2016 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee Susan Gray, Chair Victoria Thompson Kent Wright ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2016 ABSTRACT Newfoundland is an island on the east coast of Canada that is mostly forgotten to the study of history. This paper looks in depth at the fighting between France and England between 1696 and 1713, which in Europe coincided with the Nine Years’ War and the War of the Spanish Succession. In 1696, fighting broke out on Newfoundland between England and France because of the Nine Years’ War. Pierre le Moyne d’Iberville, a French officer, commanded the attacks on over twenty English settlements. The attacks lasted less than a year. Attacks would happen again because of the War of the Spanish Succession. France and England would attack each other trying to gain control of the prized commodity of the island, the cod fish. This study looks at how French and English fighting on Newfoundland helped to change the landscape and shaped the way the history of the French and English on the island is portrayed today. Historians tend to look more at the modern history of the island such as: soldiers in World War I and World War II, when Newfoundland became a Canadian province, and the English history of the island. This study argues that, by studying French and English fighting on the island, we can better see the historical significance of Newfoundland.

The matter came up by my proposing that Captain Davis finance new editions of four little old books (three of them rare) — Sullivan's Maine, Bradbury's Kennebunkport, Folsom's Saco and Southgate's Scarborough, which together would clear up the much confused time and place of the conflict between Protestant England and Catholic Prance for New World supremacy. Captain Davis thought this project too large, but was willing to attempt the other. On my submitting that New Hampshire should be in­ cluded, as neither side of the Piscataqua River could be well done without the other, this was assented to.

The present thesis, William III and the Northern Crowns during the Nine Years War 1689-97’, examines the policy of the stadtholder-king towards Sweden and Denmark - Norway in the years immediately following the English Revolution. His attempts to secure their active assistance against France were thwarted by the Swedish king’s fears of risking the neutrality he needed to complete his domestic reforms and to fulfil his ambitions of mediating in the European conflict and by Denmark’s hopes of French subsidies and support for her territorial ambitions in North Germany; while 6,000 Danish troops were secured for the Allies in 1689, a favourable alliance with Christian Y could not be concluded until November 1696. Both northern kingdoms feared the effects of the union of the two Maritime Powers on their plans for commercial expansion, which were further threatened by the Ango-Dutch ; convention of September 1689 barring all neutral trade u u u 'v' with France. This led them to form a League of Armed Neutrality in 1691 which helped to persuade William to abandon the aims of the convention and agree to compensation for seizures of their merchant ships. This work researches the changes and trends set by the advancements of firearms, and the emergence of armies utilizing these firearms. Examination of sources from the 17th century, as well as inspection of artifacts dating from the 17th century housed in the Higgins Armory, is presented within the work as well as an internet site with an interactive feature highlighting regionally unique weapons and armor. 3 3 Introduction The Higgins Armory Museum enjoys the distinction of being the only museum in the Western Hemisphere entirely devoted to the study and display of arms and armor. The museum offers a large collection of arms and armor from around the globe and from a wide range of time periods. The curatorial department of the museum wished to have their collection on display for a worldwide audience.

    CATALOGUE THREE HUNDRED THIRTEEN World Travel & Voyages WILLIAM REESE COMPANY 409 Temple Street New Haven, CT 06511 (203) 789-8081 A Note This catalogue is devoted to world travel, exploration, and trade from the first forays by Europeans to the East Indies and Sir Francis Drake’s first circumnavigation of the world in 1577-80 to the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915. Within this broad frame there are all manner of items: the works of Cortes, Boemus, and Lopes de Castanheda on the early exploration of the Indies; a series of important works on Drake, includ- ing his World Encompassed of 1628; and some of the earliest Dutch works on the East Indies, including Locke’s copy of Schouten’s circumnavigation, and the works of Neck and Linschoten. Important English voyages include Dampier, Narbrough, and Hearne. There is a wealth of French voyages as well, including the copy of Marchand’s voyage given by the author, Fleurieu, to English hydrographer Alexander Dalrymple. In the 19th century there are important manuscripts relating to the American clashes with Algiers, and such voyages as Flinders, Owen Chase (the source book for Moby Dick), and Fanning. There are also many important manuscript logs and narratives, especially the diary of American naval officer Henry Cadwalader on his 1835-36 voyage to the East Indies, and David Marshall’s illustrated journals of 1845-65.
