SEMCW3-07 Testing and adjusting clock movements Overview This unit identifies the competences you need to carry out tests and adjustments on clock movements, in accordance with approved procedures. You will be required to carry out tests on a range of clock movements, such as longcase, regulator, two and three train fusee, two and three train going barrel, and one and two train with platform escapement, to establish that they are functioning correctly. You will be required to carry out tests and adjustments which will include function, duration, and variation in accuracy during the duration, rate and beat. Your responsibilities will require you to comply with organisational policy and procedures for carrying out the testing and adjustment activities, and to report any problems with these activities that you cannot personally resolve, or that are outside your permitted authority, to the relevant people. You will be expected to work with a minimum of supervision, taking personal responsibility for your own actions and for the quality and accuracy of the work that you carry out. Your underpinning knowledge will provide a good understanding of your work, and will provide an informed approach to applying appropriate testing and adjusting procedures to clock movements. You will understand the clock movements being tested and adjusted, the test equipment being used, the various testing procedures and their application, in adequate depth to provide a sound basis for carrying out the activities, correcting faults, and ensuring that the clock movement functions correctly. You will also be expected to report where the outcome of the tests and adjustments identifies the need for further investigation or corrective measures. You will understand the safety precautions required when carrying out the testing and adjusting activities. You will be required to demonstrate safe working practices throughout, and will understand the responsibility you owe to yourself and others in the workplace. SEMCW3-07 Testing and adjusting clock movements 1 SEMCW3-07 Testing and adjusting clock movements Performance criteria You must be able to: P1 work safely at all times, complying with health and safety and other relevant regulations and guidelines P2 follow the appropriate procedures for use of tools and equipment to carry out the required tests P3 set up and carry out the tests using the correct procedures and within agreed timescales P4 record the results of the tests in the appropriate format P5 review the results and carry out further tests if necessary SEMCW3-07 Testing and adjusting clock movements 2 SEMCW3-07 Testing and adjusting clock movements Knowledge and understanding You need to know and K1 the safe working practices and procedures and the specific safety understand: precautions to be taken when testing and adjusting clock movements (to include wearing protective clothing and equipment; handling techniques; safe working practices, procedures and guidelines which satisfy current regulations such as HASAWA, COSHH and other work related legislation and guidelines) K2 the importance of keeping the work area clean, tidy and free from waste and surplus materials K3 the hazards associated with testing and adjusting clock movements, and with the equipment that is used, and how these hazards can be minimised K4 the protective equipment that you need to use for both personal protection and protection of the clock movement being tested and adjusted K5 how to use and extract information from drawings, history/maintenance reports, and other documents needed in the testing and adjusting process K6 terminology used with clock movements, and the use of diagrams and associated symbols K7 the basic principles of operation of the clock movement being tested and adjusted, and the performance characteristics and function of the components within the movement K8 good practice/approved procedures to be followed during the testing and adjusting of the clock movements K9 the various testing and adjusting methods and procedures to be used K10 the type of equipment to be used to carry out the various tests, and their care and calibration requirements K11 how to determine the most suitable tests for the movement K12 how to set up and apply the appropriate test equipment K13 the types of adjustment that can be carried out to bring the movement within the required working standard K14 the tools and equipment to be used during the testing and adjusting activities K15 how to check that tools and equipment are free from damage or defects, are in a safe and usable condition, and are configured correctly for their intended purpose K16 how to analyse test results, and determine whether the clock movement meets the required working standard K17 the problems that can occur with the testing and adjustment of the clock movements, and how these can be overcome K18 the documentation to be completed at the conclusion of the testing and adjusting activities SEMCW3-07 Testing and adjusting clock movements 3 SEMCW3-07 Testing and adjusting clock movements K19 the extent of your own authority and to whom you should report if you have problems that you cannot resolve SEMCW3-07 Testing and adjusting clock movements 4 SEMCW3-07 Testing and adjusting clock movements Additional Information Scope/range 1. carry out
