MEDIA CONTACT [email protected] June 28, 2017 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ACADEMY INVITES 774 TO MEMBERSHIP LOS ANGELES, CA – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is extending invitations to join the organization to 774 artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures. Those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy’s membership in 2017. 30 individuals (noted by an asterisk) have been invited to join the Academy by multiple branches. These individuals must select one branch upon accepting membership. New members will be welcomed into the Academy at invitation-only receptions in the fall. Baily and approved by New Brunswick, New Jersey October, 2010 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Immigrants of a Different Religion: Jewish Argentines and the Boundaries of Argentinidad, 1919-2009 By JOHN DIZGUN Dissertation Director: Samuel L. Baily This study explores Jewish and non-Jewish Argentine reactions and responses to four pivotal events that unfolded in the twentieth century: the 1919 Semana Trágica, the Catholic education decrees of the 1940s, the 1962 Sirota Affair, and the 1976-1983 Dirty War. The methodological decision to focus on four physically and/or culturally violent acts is intentional: while the passionate and emotive reactions and responses to those events may not reflect everyday political, cultural, and social norms in twentieth-century Argentine society, they provide a compelling opportunity to test the ever-changing meaning, boundaries, and limitations of argentinidad over the past century. The four episodes help to reveal the challenges Argentines have faced in assimilating a religious minority and what those efforts suggest about how various groups have sought to define and control what it has meant to be “Argentine” over time. Scholars such as Samuel Baily, Fernando DeVoto, José Moya and others have done an excellent job highlighting how Italian and Spanish immigrants have negotiated and navigated the ii competing demands of ‘ethnic’ preservation and ‘national’ integration in Argentina. -

We establishes five interactions areas between both disciplines: 1) the hegemony of testimonial realism; 2) The recovery of popular scenic forms (mainly linked to sainete, grotesque and the tango); 3) the formulation of allegoric films based on theatrical strategies; 4) Films that use theater as a meta-reflective operation; and 5) the appearance of cinematographic proposals contrary to realism whose dialogue was initiated with the emerging theater of the post-dictatorship. Keywords: post-dictactorship; Argentina; interarts studies; staging; cartography Resumen: el escrito formula un recorrido cartográfico alrededor de los diferentes tipos de relación que el cine argentino estrenado entre 1984 y 1994 sostuvo con el teatro del período. Para ello se establecen cinco zonas de interacción entre ambas disciplinas: 1) la hegemonía del realismo testimonial; 2) La recuperación de formas escénicas populares (fundamentalmente ligadas al sainete el grotesco y el tango); 3) la elaboración de alegorías fílmicas basadas en estrategias teatrales; 4) Los films que utilizan el teatro como operación metarreflexiva; y 5) la aparición de propuestas cinematográficas contrarias al realismo cuyo diálogo se entabló con los espectáculos emergentes de la postdictadura. -

Da det marginaliserte ble hverdagslig Argentinsk spillefilm og den økonomiske krisen Masteroppgave i medievitenskap Birgitte Hanssen Mandelid Institutt for medier og kommunikasjon Universitetet i Oslo Høsten 2009 Sammendrag Da den argentinske økonomien kollapset i 2001, opplevde landets filmindustri en kreativ og kommersiell oppsving. Gjennom siste halvdel av 1990-tallet hadde en ny generasjon filmskapere kommet til, for det meste utdannet ved landets mange nyetablerte filmskoler, og rundt årtusenskiftet slo talentet de inntil da hadde vist i kortfilmer og manuskonkurranser ut i full blomst. De unge regissørene sto utenfor systemet, og tok – i motsetning til de mer underholdningsvennlige og eskapistiske produktene av den etablerte industrien – for seg små historier fra samtiden, der endringer i samfunnet ble brukt som bakteppe for enkeltmenneskers situasjon og skjebne. Filmene hadde en rekke forskjeller, men også så mange likheter at man begynte å snakke om en bølge. Denne avhandlingen tar for seg den nye argentinske filmens fellestrekk, samt forholdet mellom filmen og samfunnet den ble til i. Gjennom tekstanalyse av fire definerende filmer; Mundo grúa (1999), Nueve reinas (2000), La ciénaga (2001) og Un oso rojo (2002), forsøker oppgaven å kartlegge hvordan filmen er påvirket stilistisk og tematisk av sin sosioøkonomiske samtid, og hvordan spesielle aspekter ved landets situasjon, som fattigdom og arbeidsledighet, er representert i fiksjonen. During the last half of the 1990s a lot of new directors, for the most part educated at one of the many new film schools, challenged the status quo with innovative short films and well developed scripts. -

Downloaded by [New York University] at 04:46 12 April 2017 Football and Literature in South America South America is a region that enjoys an unusually high profile as the origin of some of the world’s greatest writers and most celebrated football- ers. This is the first book to undertake a systematic study of the relation- ship between football and literature across South America. Beginning with the first football poem, published in 1899, it surveys a range of texts that address key issues in the region’s social and political history. Drawing on a substantial corpus of short stories, novels and poems, each chapter considers the shifting relationship between football and liter- ature in South America across more than a century of writing. The way in which authors combine football and literature to challenge – or conform to – the dominant narratives of their time suggests that this sport can be seen as a recurring theme through which matters of identity, nationhood, race, gender, violence, politics and aesthetics are played out. This book is fascinating reading for any student, scholar or serious fan of football, as well as for all those interested in the relationship between sports history, literature and society. David Wood is Professor of Latin American Studies at the University of Sheffield, UK, where his teaching and research centre on various aspects of literary and non- literary culture across Latin America. He has published widely in Europe and Latin America, and has previously written on the cultural history of football in Peru and on sport in Mexican and Cuban cinema.
