When Crisis Becomes Form: Athens as a Paradigm Theophilos Tramboulis and Yorgos Tzirtzilakis Documenta 14 in Athens: a glossary Documenta 14 (d14) was an undoubtedly important exhibition which triggered endless debate and controversy that continues today.1 The choice of Athens as a topological paradigm by Adam Szymczyk, an ingenious curator with expected and unexpected virtues, initially fired people’s appetite and enthusiasm. Yet what it ultimately managed to do was demythicize the event itself in a way, as well as demonstrate a series of dangers in the operation of the institution. At the same time it brought to light a series of innate ailments and fantasies of contemporary culture in Greece, which manifested themselves in a distorted and sometimes aggressive fashion. This is not without significance, since it functioned complementarily to—rather than independently of—the exhibition. In short, d14 served as a kind of double mirror with which we could see the cultural relation of Greece with Europe and the world, but also the reverse: that of Europe with Greece. So what was d14 in Athens? For now we must necessarily sidestep its contribution to making Athens and Greek culture a temporary center of international attention in order to focus on what must not be overlooked. The series of arguments below can be read individually or successively as a network of alternating commentary, but also through their diagonal intersections, ruptures, disagreements, and connections, where meaning is produced in a syncretic or dialectical way. D14 is the symptom from which all discourse around it begins. 1/11 A political metonymy The critical reception of d14 in Greece focused mainly on the institution and its operation; on its discursive and political context rather than the works, concerts, or lectures— generally speaking, the actual art and discourse presented by the exhibition.

  • “Heroes” in Neo-Hellenic Art (19Th – 20Th Centuries) the New National Models and Their Development Panagiota Papanikolaou International Hellenic University
Volume 2, Issue 5, May 2015, PP 249-256 ISSN 2349-0373 (Print) & ISSN 2349-0381 (Online) www.arcjournals.org International Journal of Humanities Social Sciences and Education (IJHSSE) “Heroes” in Neo-Hellenic Art (19th – 20th Centuries) the New National Models and their Development Panagiota Papanikolaou International Hellenic University “Pity the country that needs heroes.” Bertolt Brecht Abstract The outbreak of the Greek Revolution in 1821 acted as a catalyst for the country and put in place the conditions for the occurrence of many new phenomena, such as the emergence of art, for example, which was influenced by Western mannerisms. This has been considered absolutely normal, because this is when the actual conditions for the development of art were met. The social, legal, moral and political conditions were completely overhauled and this enabled citizens to express themselves freely. (1) For Greeks, the Greek Revolution has been the great historical event out of which the new Greek state emerged. However, to achieve this, sacrifices and struggles have been necessary, which resulted in certain people standing out for their achievements, bringing back to the people’s memory the ancient myths about semi-gods and heroes as well as the saints of the Christian religion. The heroes and heroines of the new Hellenism leapt out of the Greek Revolution, lauded by poets and represented by artists. In general, there are many categories of “heroes”, as there are many definitions thereof. According to dictionaries, a “hero” is someone “who commits a valiant act, often to the point of sacrificing themselves”, a person who achieves something particularly difficult and who is admired by others.

Wasn’t there once a time when politicians were driven primarily by unselfish - motives or altruistic intentions and entered politics to serve the public good — a time when politicians - were well-educated people, bound by moral integrity and high ideals? True, politics has always been - prone to corruption and the abuse of power, but in recent years it seems that self-serving private interests — or the interests of industry and business — have come to take precedence over the inter- ests of the wider electorate. - Citizens, it seems, exist only to be 2 managed, manipulated and - exploited, rather than served. - Political campaigns deliver mes- - sages of fear, rather than of hope or vision; scandals abound and mis- creants offer apologies without sin- - cerity and then quickly return to - ‘business as usual’.

  • The Historiography and Cartography of the Macedonian Question
    X. The Historiography and Cartography of the Macedonian Question by Basil C. Gounaris 1. The contest for the Ottoman inheritance in Europe From the moment that the word ‘Hellas’ was deemed the most appropriate for the name of the modern state of the Romioi, the question of Macedonia, in theory at least, had been judged. Historical geography – according to Strabo’s well-known commentary – placed the land of Alexander within Greece, but in actuality, of course, the issue did not concern the Greeks directly. Their territorial ambitions extended at a stretch beyond Mt Olympus. Moreover, until the mid-19th century at least, the absence of any rival com- petitors meant that the identity of the Macedonians was not an issue yet. Knowledge of their history in medieval times was foggy, whilst the multilingualism did not surprise anyone: to be an Orthodox Christian was a necessary factor, but also sufficient enough for one to be deemed part of the Greek nation.1 If there was any concern over Macedonia and its inhabitants, then this was clearly to be found within the Slavic world, in particular within the Bulgarian national renais- sance and its relations with both Russia and Serbia. Prior to the foundation of the Greek state in 1822, Vuk Karadjic, the leading Serbian philologist and ethnographer included some Slavic folk songs from Razlog as ‘Bulgarian’ in one of his publications. In 1829 the Ukrainian Yuri Venelin also classed the inhabitants of Macedonia as Bulgarians, in his study The Ancient and Present-Day Bulgarians and their Political, Ethnographic and Religious Relationship to the Russians.
