The music, programmed and emceed by the NJJS’s own Jack Stine, swung from the first downbeat to the last coda. First up were Alan Dale and The New Legacy Band, who marked their 14th consecutive appearance at the event. This is one swinging outfit and they know their way around the Ellington, Basie and Cole Porter songbooks, to mention just a few. The Dale group was fronted for much of its performance by vocalist Bryan Clark. Clark’s look is 21st Century hip and he brings a contemporary sensibility to material associated with the likes of Nat King Cole, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra and other classic vocalists. He makes the music new and alive with his easygoing and swinging style.

  • Stacey Kent, Jim Tomlinson, and Kazuo Ishiguro “Wish They Could Go Travelling Again” by ALLEN MORRISON
From the April 2021 Issue Stacey Kent, Jim Tomlinson, and Kazuo Ishiguro “Wish They Could Go Travelling Again” by ALLEN MORRISON The singer Stacey Kent and her husband/musical director Jim Tomlinson have been riding out the pandemic in style from their mountain retreat in Colorado, elevation 7,000 feet, complete with home studio and picture windows looking out on the hills and valley below. They’re counting their blessings. “There’s immense suffering out there,” Kent told me recently over Zoom, with Tomlinson at her side. “We know we’re extraordinarily lucky that we’re not part of that. Of course, we miss being connected to our musicians. But I’m here with my best friend, and we’ve been very productive. We have a neighbor who teaches Tai-Chi, so we started doing that with him. Via Zoom.” The New Jersey-born Kent has been building a fervent international following since her debut album in 1997. Her quiet voice remains remarkably pure, a presence at once intense and intimate, modeled after her hero João Gilberto. Her unimpeachable repertoire draws extensively on the American and Brazilian Songbooks. It doesn’t hurt that she sings in multiple languages, including English, French and Portuguese. Her 14 albums include duets with Brazilian bossa nova greats Marcos Valle and Roberto Menescal, and an album entirely in French. Jim Tomlinson and Stacey Kent at Fnac Montparnasse in 2007. (Photo: Wikimedia Commons) Kent honors the composers’ intent and keeps the focus on the lyrics. Other jazz singers experiment with the time, alter the melody freely, or scat, but Kent wants none of this.

  • STACEY KENT the Changing Lights English Bio Liner Notes
Stacey Kent - "The Changing Lights" The critic Gilles Tordjman once wrote that Brazil was not a nation, but "a region of the heart, where everything seems to ring to the tune of a stronger and more accurate vibration". This is a sentence that Stacey Kent could no doubt make her own. At the age of 14, the American singer discovered the endless charms of the album, Getz / Gilberto, an historic encounter of jazz and bossa nova, after which nothing would ever be the same. Over the course of a musical journey that has wandered freely in the open spaces of jazz and song, Brazil became, in her eyes, more than a country: a kind of internalized poetic horizon, a chosen land on an intimate scale, adjusted to the proportions of her soul, her singing and her inspiration. Whether she literally celebrates them through covers of Tom Jobim, Sergio Mendes or Luiz Bonfá, or whether she summons the spirit through the finesse of her performances, Stacey Kent has never loosened the emotional ties that bind her to Brazilian music. An eternal student, this well-informed polyglot, with a degree in comparative literature, has followed her passion to the point of learning the Portuguese language and taking an interest in the cultural and political history of the giant auriverde. It is this passion, made both of depth and lightness, that pervades her tenth album. The Changing Lights is not "Stacey Kent's Brazilian record". It is more a recreational break or a sound postcard than a stuffy exercise of style. In collaboration with her partner and husband, the English saxophonist, composer and arranger, Jim Tomlinson, Stacey Kent simply displays all the sensitive qualities of a musician for whom Brazil represents, precisely and foremost, "a region of the heart".
