Engagée à l'âge de 17 ans par une agence de mannequins, elle part pour New York deux ans plus tard. C'est durant son séjour à New York qu'elle attrape « le virus de la musique » en écoutant Talkin' 'Bout a Revolution de Tracy Chapman, qui lui donne envie de tenter sa chance comme chanteuse. Elle commence à l'époque à prendre des cours de chant et à écrire des textes. Lassée de « faire le cintre », elle arrête sa carrière de mannequin et, après des rencontres infructueuses avec des producteurs aux États-Unis, rentre en France et débute en 2008 sur les scènes parisiennes. À l'occasion d'un passage au Sentier des Halles, elle fait la connaissance de Malik Ndiaye, déjà producteur d'Ayọ et Grace. Ayant choisi comme nom de scène Imany — signifiant « ma foi » ou « mon espoir » en arabe — elle écrit ses chansons en anglais, langue qui, pour l'écriture, lui vient « plus naturellement » que le français. Elle débute en faisant les premières parties d'artistes comme Angie Stone, Wasis Diop, Anthony Hamilton, Hocus Pocus, Sly Johnson et Ben l'Oncle Soul. En mai 2011 sort son premier album, The Shape of a Broken Heart, dont les ventes lui valent d'être certifié disque de platine, notamment grâce au succès de son premier single, You will never know. -

It is run as a co-operative, staffed and administered by the artists. As well as showing across the UK, they have shown in Germany, Canada, the USA and Moscow. Greenwich Printmakers have also shown in many prestigious exhibitions in the UK, the most notable being at the National Theatre and the Barbican. In their fortieth anniversary year they have shown at the Salvation Army International HQ and Watts Gallery Artists Village near Guildford in Surrey. Their artists are regularly selected for the RE Masters and the National Original Print Exhibition at Bankside Gallery, the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and The Discerning Eye. His photographs include performance shots and off–stage pictures of Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, Duke Ellington, Nina Simone and more. A previously unseen archive of his work also features behind the scene images of Ronnie Scott, personally overseeing the construction of the club's iconic Soho venue. -

Schmalenberger ABSTRACT Stylistic Evolution of Jazz Drummer Ed Blackwell: The Cultural Intersection of New Orleans and West Africa David J. Schmalenberger The two primary functions of a jazz drummer are to maintain a consistent pulse and to support the soloists within the musical group. Throughout the twentieth century, jazz drummers have found creative ways to fulfill or challenge these roles. In the case of Bebop, for example, pioneers Kenny Clarke and Max Roach forged a new drumming style in the 1940’s that was markedly more independent technically, as well as more lyrical in both time-keeping and soloing. The stylistic innovations of Clarke and Roach also helped foster a new attitude: the acceptance of drummers as thoughtful, sensitive musical artists. These developments paved the way for the next generation of jazz drummers, one that would further challenge conventional musical roles in the post-Hard Bop era. One of Max Roach’s most faithful disciples was the New Orleans-born drummer Edward Joseph “Boogie” Blackwell (1929-1992). Ed Blackwell’s playing style at the beginning of his career in the late 1940’s was predominantly influenced by Bebop and the drumming vocabulary of Max Roach. -
