Pat Garrett Bio Country entertainer Pat Garrett is one of music’s best-kept secrets. The vocal powerhouse, who’s shared the stage with the likes of Johnny Cash, George Jones, and Willie Nelson, and has released seven albums of original music, has a host of other credits to his name. Most people are surprised to learn that the prolific singer/songwriter penned the song, “Bad Woman”, recorded by acclaimed British rockers, The Arctic Monkeys. Or that his biker song and video, “Wild Hog, has over 100,000 hits on YouTube. Or that he helped launch the career of Taylor Swift. Or that he’s been on the GOP trail entertaining at Palin/McCain rallies with his original song, “Moose-Shootin’ Mama”. While his rich baritone voice is perfectly showcased on one of his romantic original ballads, like wedding favorite “Hold Onto You”, he is not one to shy away from a stimulating debate. A prime example is his latest song, “I’m Voting for Donald for President” in support of presumptive presidential nominee, Donald Trump. He wrote the song soon after the billionaire businessman announced his candidacy in summer of 2015, amidst a firestorm of criticism. The song ad video are being released nationally in May 2016. This isn’t the first time Garrett’s thrown his cowboy hat into the political ring. His infectious, upbeat single “Moose Shootin’ Mama,” a tribute to former candidate for Vice President, Sarah Palin was one of the most talked about songs of the 2008 political season, leading to coverage on major news outlets, Fox and ABC, and a stint as the entertainer on the GOP trail. He has also received national attention for his irreverent commentary on the political scene, with the “Monica Lewinsky Polka, “Stick Your Oil’, “Bailout, and his “Saddam Stomp,” which hit the Billboard Top 100 and was covered by ABC News, Rolling Stone and Country Weekly. The Harley riding cowboy is also a hit on the biker scene. “Wild Hog” is a full-out, rollicking stomp that became a Top 20 download, and has almost 150,000 hits on YouTube. “Drinking This Yuengling Beer” is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the famous brewery near his hometown in Pennsylvania. Antimodernism and Genre from Country-Rock to Alt.Country, 1968-98 Jason Bianchi Kirby San Jose, California B.A. Sociology and Literature, University of California—Santa Cruz, 2002 M.A. American Culture Studies, Bowling Green State University, 2006 A dissertation presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Music University of Virginia August 2016 Abstract This dissertation is a cultural history exploring expressions of and responses to antimodernism within country-rock and “alternative country” music, drawing on reception history, intellectual history of underground and mainstream left-wing American political movements, interview discourse with artists, and close readings of songs. In this dissertation I argue that despite styling itself as a type of purer root or “folk” form of contemporary country music, in terms of its ideologies, studio production techniques, fan and critical discourse, and business practices, alt.country is a type of rock music. It embodies some of rock’s core beliefs, particularly rock’s critique of the more bureaucratic and “rationalized” dimensions of postindustrial capitalism, particularly as this relates to the everyday impact of new technologies. I argue that this anti-modernism, emerging here from the American political left, has been different in different eras, from the back-to-the-land movement of the late 1960s, to late- ‘80s/early-‘90s expressions of left populist punk’s longing for “folk” community. In this project I look beyond contemporary scholarly understandings of alt.country as mostly ironic, as ultimately I suggest that this music illustrates what Keir Keightley calls rock’s aesthetic of “seriousness,” more precisely than it does an understanding of country music ideology.

This thesis also discussed the event management company, The Afro Giants (tAG), which was created to groom, manage, record musicians, and produce shows around the world. Strong Enough Sheryl Crow does not shy away from exposing her vulnerability through her music - and nowhere is this more evident than in “Strong Enough.” Sheryl’s candid and emotionally powerful music would go on to sell over 50 million albums worldwide – but the seeds of her big-time success were planted in a small town. After graduating from college, she moved to St. Louis to work as an elementary school teacher. Sheryl’s first professional gigs were in commercials, singing backup and writing jingles for corporate clients. When royalty checks started to trump her teacher’s salary, Sheryl began to envision a career making music. Sheryl left behind her teaching gig and headed to Los Angeles. She worked her way into several auditions as a backup singer and landed several gigs including Michael Jackson’s “Bad” world tour. When the album was shelved, she began playing music and writing regularly with a pack of LA musicians.
