Political organizer, grassroots historian, and writer Leslie Feinberg was a pioneer of trangenderwarrior.org. transgender activism and culture. Long a part of the struggle for queer liberation, Feinberg openly identified as transgendered and was outspoken about "hir" experiences living outside of the gender binary. ("Ze" has expressed the need for our language to incorporate alternate pronouns such as "hir" rather than "her" or "his," and "ze" or "sie" as opposed to "he" or "she.") Feinberg was born in Kansas City, Missouri on September 1, 1949, and reared in Buffalo, New York, in a working-class Jewish family. At age 14, ze began supporting hirself by working in the display sign shop of a local department store, and eventually stopped going to hir high school classes, though officially ze received her diploma. It was during this time that ze entered the social life of the Buffalo gay bars. Facing blatant discrimination as a transgender person, ze found it difficult to attain steady work. For most of hir life, ze earned her living through a series of low-wage temporary jobs, including working in a PVC pipe factory and a book bindery, cleaning out ship cargo holds and washing dishes, serving an ASL interpreter, and inputting medical data. Feinberg is perhaps best known as the author of the widely acclaimed novel Stone Butch Blues (Firebrand Books, 1993). In response to the common assumption that the novel is semi-autobiographical, ze insisted that the book is a work of fiction.

Courtesy Minnie Bruce Award-winning author Minnie Bruce Pratt has written moving and erotic poems and Pratt. stories that explore sex and gender issues, as well as powerful essays that decry bigotry in its many forms. An activist for glbtq rights, Pratt has also worked to combat racism, anti-Semitism, and other kinds of prejudice. Pratt, born September 12, 1946 in Selma, Alabama, grew up in the nearby small town of Centreville. She recalled feeling "strange and different . in a completely unarticulated way" when she was in high school but did not recognize her lesbianism at the time. She was being raised to be a proper Southern lady--good- mannered, church-going, and heterosexual. Pratt enrolled in the University of Alabama in 1964. Always an avid reader, she then began writing poetry, an interest that she shared with her fellow student Marvin E. Weaver II. The two became engaged. Their professors encouraged Weaver in his aspirations to become a poet but suggested the more "practical" course of an academic career for Pratt. The couple married while still in college, and during her senior year Pratt became pregnant. Atypically for the time, she continued attending classes during her pregnancy. A Phi Beta Kappa scholar, Pratt graduated in 1968. Her excellent work won her three fellowships, a Fulbright, a Woodrow Wilson, and an NEA Title IV. She declined the Fulbright because her baby was due about two weeks before she would have needed to leave for England.

AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Marieke L. Steuben for the degree of Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies in English, English, and Women Studies presented on March 16, 2007. Title: Voices of CALYX: Narratives of Feminist Publishing Activism, 1976-2006 Abstract approved: ________________________________________________________________________ Laura P. Rice This thesis examines the nature of publishing as a political endeavor through a detailed investigation of the feminist publishing movement in the U.S. since the 1970s. Feminist publishers emerged from an activist context of feminist struggle, and they evolved within changing political and social climates, facing ideological and economic challenges that led to their widespread demise. This project specifically traces the emergence and development of CALYX, a feminist literary publisher founded in 1976 in Corvallis, Oregon, and its relationship with the feminist movement. In-depth personal interviews with CALYX editors provide a narrative portrait of CALYX’s history in a feminist context and offer a detailed, personal account of feminist publishing activism. Using feminist research methodologies, this project highlights the participants’ narratives and focuses on the meanings they give to their experiences. A multi-vocal narrative format allows participants’ stories to be told in their own words and in their unique voices. Their stories give richness and depth to an analysis of CALYX’s feminist mission, accomplishments, and struggles as a feminist publisher. © Copyright by Marieke L.
