BIOGRAPHY Cherríe Moraga, an award-winning playwright, poet and essayist, has received national recognition for her creative and critical writings focussing on racism and classism within the white women's movement, issues of sexuality, lesbianism and cultural and racial identity, as well as homophobia and sexism within Chicano culture. Moraga's involvements as a teacher, gay and lesbian youth advocate, editor, activist and cultural critic have served as a catalyst for her work. Guide to the Cherríe Moraga Special Collections M0905 2 Papers, 1970-1996 Moraga is perhaps most widely known for the highly-acclaimed anthology, This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color, which she co-edited with Gloria Anzaldúa and Loving in the War Years / Lo Que Nunca Pasó Por Sus Labios, a collection of poetry and essays. Her theater productions include "Giving Up the Ghost," "Shadow of a Man," "Heroes and Saints," and "Watsonville : Some Place Not Here." She has most recently written Waiting in the wings : a portrait of a queer motherhood (Firebrand Books, 1997). Born in Whittier, California in 1952, Moraga attended Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles, from which she graduated in 1974. Following college she worked for three years as an English teacher in Burbank, California. In 1977 she moved to San Francisco where she attended graduate school in Feminist Studies at San Francisco State University. There, she met Barbara Smith, with whom she was to found the important publishing house Kitchen Table : Women of Color Press in New York in 1981.The Press became a critical voice for feminism from Black, Latina, and Third World perspectives. She has served as an instructor in Women's Studies and Chicano Studies and Creative Writing at San Francisco State University, Stanford University, the University of California at Berkeley, and the University of Massachusetts, Boston. Moraga received a Theatre Communications Group theatre artist residency grant in 1996, the NEA's Theatre Playwrights' Fellowship in 1993 and two Fund for New American Plays Awards from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. She was awarded the Outlook Foundation Literary Award in 1991, The American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation in 1986, and a New York State Creative Arts Public Service Program Grant for Poetry. The papers include Moraga's personal and professional correspondence, journals, collected Feminist and Women of Color serials, drafts, manuscripts and galleys, and final publications of her writings, as well as important essays and reviews of her work. Manuscripts by Others, 7. Publicity, 8. Theater Correspondence, 9. Academic Work, 10. Collector's Publications, 11. Publicity, 12. Electronic Media, 13. Essays and Reviews, 14. Photographs, Posters, and Awards and 15. Oversize Wherever Moraga's original arrangement of materials was encountered, her order was respected. Series I. Publications Scope and Content Note Arrangement Cherríe Moraga has been a prolific writer during the 1980s and 1990s. This series houses a copy of each of her publications, arranged alphabetically by books, edited volumes, and journal publications. Series II. Manuscripts Scope and Content Note Arrangement Manuscript drafts of most of Moraga's volumes are housed in Series II, along with research materials, transcripts of interviews, and correspondence related to individual pieces. Copies of manuscripts contained on computer disks which are part of the collection (Series XII.c) have been made and inculded in this series. These are primarily draft versions of "Watsonville." This series has been organized alphabetically. Series III. Journals Scope and Content Note Arrangement Moraga bound journals and miscellaneous personal writings have been marked for restricted use by the author. The journals are arranged chronologically. Series IV. Correspondence Scope and Content Note Arrangement Moraga's correspondence has been arranged into two subseries: a. Personal and b. Business.The business correspondence contains a large grouping of permissions requests to cite, reproduce, or use her work. Permissions requests have been arranged alphabetically by the author and title of the work her writings are to be used in. Moraga's personal correspondence has been restricted by the author. Series V. Gigs Scope and Content Note Arrangement Following indications from the collection, Series V contains Cherríe Moraga's gig files. Gigs comprise reading requests, speaking requests, interviews, and requests for publication, as well as business correspondence pertaining to her travel arrangements. The series is organized alphabetically by institution (where available) of name of correpsondent. Series

Powell: Creating an Osage Future: Art, Resistance, and Self-Representation (Under the direction of Jean Dennison and Rudolf Colloredo Mansfeld) Creating an Osage Future: Art, Resistance, and Self-Representation, examines the ways Osage citizens—and particularly artists—engage with mainstream audiences in museums and other spaces in order to negotiate, manipulate, subvert, and sometimes sustain static notions of Indigeneity. This project interrogates some of the tactics Osage and other American Indian artists are using to imagine a stronger future, as well as the strategies mainstream museums are using to build and sustain more equitable and mutually beneficial relationships between their institutions and Indigenous communities. In addition to object-centered ethnographic research with contemporary Osage artists and Osage citizens and collections-based museum research at various museums, this dissertation is informed by three recent exhibitions featuring the work of Osage artists at the Denver Art Museum, the Field Museum of Natural History, and the Sam Noble Museum at the University of Oklahoma. Drawing on methodologies of humor, autoethnography, and collaborative knowledge-production, this project strives to disrupt the hierarchal structures within academia and museums, opening space for Indigenous and aesthetic knowledges.

The thesis explores the poetry (and some prose) of Plath, Sexton, Atwood and Rich in terms of the changing constructions of self-image predicated upon the female role between approx. 1950-1980.1 am particularly concerned with the question of how the discourses of femininity and feminism contribute to the scope of the images of the self which are presented. The period was chosen because it involved significant upheaval and change in terms of women's role and gender identity. The four poets' work spans this period of change and appears to some extent generally characteristic of its social, political and cultural contexts in America, Britain and Canada.

  • 'Re-Borderisation' in the South-Western Novels of Ana Castillo and Cormac Mccarthy
    Revista de Estudios Norteamericanos, nº 12 (2007), pp. 21-37 ‘RE-BORDERISATION’ IN THE SOUTH-WESTERN NOVELS OF ANA CASTILLO AND CORMAC MCCARTHY. PETER CARR Swansea University, UK Two novels of the US/Mexican borderlands published in the early 1990s achieved notable mainstream success and critical acclaim –So Far From God by Ana Castillo (first published in 1993) and All The Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy (first published 1992). Here were two ostensibly very different South-Western novels which nevertheless managed to achieve a singular effect: in each case it was this novel that thrust an established, but limited-appeal, writer out of the gloom of academic readership and into the glare of mainstream literary celebrity. These texts, then, are crossover novels in two senses. They are of the margins in the sense that as novels of the borderlands they each deal with the interface of Mexican and Anglo cultures but they are also of the centre in that their multicultural narratives have been embraced by the mainstream. This paper argues two main points. The first is that the mainstream consumer-appeal of these novels –their successful commodification of multicultural images– actually relies upon the subtle repetition of myths of the borderlands in ways that that reinforce ethnic and cultural stereotypes. The second argument is that this process in the novels is part of a general mainstream ‘reborderization’ in the US in the early-to mid-1990s: a reactionary response to the perceived erosion of traditional concepts of national identity in an era dominated by post-modern trans- boundary forces exemplified by initiatives such as the North American Free Trade Agreement.

While at the heart of this trend lies the desire for Chicana creativity to escape marginalization, this movement dismisses rather than confronts problems within dominant U.S. culture.
