Strategic Development of Varietal Vineyards in the Czech Republic

Tomšík Received: November 30, 2011 Abstract SEDLO, J., TOMŠÍK, P.: Strategic development of varietal vineyards in the Czech Republic. Acta univ. agric. et silvic. Mendel. Brun., 2012, LX, No. 2, pp. 325–334 The paper describes strategic changes in the structure of grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) varieties grown in the Czech Republic. In 2004–2005, (i.e. a er the admission of the Czech Republic into the EU) expenditures associated with restructuralisation and transformation of vineyards amounted for CZK 25,423 thous. The authors examine the development taking place in this domain within the last 50 years (i.e. from 1960 to 2010) and pay detailed attention to the period of 1989 to 2010. The paper analyses reasons of these changes and tries to describe the future development expected a er 2010. The current production potential of the Czech Republic are 19,633.45 hectares of vineyards. For the time being, there are in average 1.07 wine growers per hectare of vineyards. As compared with 1960, the acreage of vineyards has doubled up and the number of the most frequent varieties has also increased. Within the period of 1989–1990, four varieties (i.e. Müller Thurgau, Green Veltliner, Italian Riesling and Sankt Laurent) occupied more than 60 % of the total vineyards area in the Czech Republic, whereas at present there are altogether 8 varieties (Müller Thurgau, Green Veltliner, Italian Riesling, Rhein Riesling, Sauvignon, Sankt Laurent, Blaufrankish, and Zweigeltrebe) at the nearly the same acreage. -

Czech wine-production industry and recent movement forces Vinařství v České republice a aktuální změnotvorné síly P. Ž UFAN Mendel University of Agriculture and Forestry, Brno, Czech Republic Abstract: The paper focuses on identification of the current key movement forces in wine-production industry in the Czech Republic, and its goal is to analyse these key influences, and to identify the most important ones (long term industry growth-rate, technological changes, regulation influences and changes of government policy, and changes of societal priorities and life style). Based on the identified key factors influencing future development and changes in this industry, recommendations for firms are formulated. Key words: industry, wine-production, environment, analysis, movement force Abstrakt: Příspěvek je zaměřen na identifikaci změnotvorných sil v odvětví vinařství v ČR a jeho cílem je analyzovat tyto klíčové vlivy a identifikovat nejdůležitější z nich (dlouhodobá míra růstu odvětví, změny technologie, regulační vlivy a změ- ny vládní politiky a změny společenských priorit a životního stylu). Na základě identifikovaných klíčových faktorů ovliv- ňujících budoucí vývoj a změny v odvětví jsou formulována doporučení pro firmy v tomto odvětví působící. KYSELA PERE et FILS, LTD. www.kysela.com 2020 Domaine Descroix Beaujolais Nouveau France – Burgundy – Beaujolais AOC ABOUT DOMAINE DESCROIX Domaine Descroix is a fourth-generation family winery, founded in 1905 & currently owned by Xavier Descroix. The winery is located in the village of Lantignié, north of Beaujolais, right next to Beaujeu (the historic capital for which the Beaujolais region is named). The vineyards measures 11.27 hectares total (27.84 acres), with 9.75 hectares in Beaujolais and Beaujolais Villages AOC, and small parcels of Brouilly, Morgon, Beaujolais Villages Blanc & Bourgogne Blanc. The Beaujolais vineyards are in Beaujeu and Lantignié, where the soils are made of granite and sand, resulting in fruity wines with character. ABOUT THE WINE Nouveau originated about a century ago as a 'vin de l'année' - a cheap and cheerful drink produced by locals to celebrate the end of the harvest season. The Beaujolais AOC was established in 1937, and after WWII, the wine was sold outside of the area. By the 1970's, Beaujolais Nouveau day was a national event. We celebrate the wine’s release on the 3rd Thursday in November, just weeks after the grapes have been harvested. Today Beaujolais Nouveau accounts for 30% of Beaujolais’ production. Beaujolais exports to the US started to increase in 2015 & have continued steadily over the past few years. Beaujolais has experienced a renewal of sorts, with an increase in quality and diversity, as well as organic farming & interest from younger generations. The United States is the second largest importer of Beaujolais Nouveau at nearly 150,000 cases, which accounts for more than 15% of the region’s total exports and almost 8% of the 20 million cases produced. -

Goldsworthy Lincoln University 1993 i Abstract of a thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of M.Appl.Sc. PRE-FERMENTATION MACERATION OF PINOT NOIR WINE by S. A. Goldsworthy Two pre-fermentation treatments were investigated in Pinot noir (Vitis vinifera L.) wines. The effects of cold maceration and carbonic maceration on the wines' composition, colour parameters and sensory properties were examined. Cold maceration is a winemaking technique used to increase non-alcoholic extraction in Pinot noir winemaking prior to fermentation. It involves holding crushed grapes with approximately 100-150 mg r 1 S02 at low temperatures and is thought to increase the colour, aroma and flavour of the resulting wines. Carbonic maceration uses whole bunches that have undergone anaerobic metabolism to produce characteristically fruity and spicy wines. Pre-fermentation cold maceration produces wines that are higher in titratable acidity and monomeric anthocyanin content, but lower in colour density, hue and polymeric pigments. Reducing the maceration temperature below 10°C has little effect. Carbonic maceration produces wines that are lower in titratable acidity, monomeric anthocyanin content, and colour density but are higher in colour hue and amount of polymeric pigments. ii Quantitative descriptive analysis was used to define the effects of these pre-fermentation maceration treatments on the sensory characteristics of the resulting wine. Trained panel members found that there were no discernable sensory differences in the compositional parameters despite measurable chemical differences.
