Konstantin Frank ignited the “Vinifera Revolution” a movement that forever changed the course of wine in the Finger Lakes. Our Founder, Dr. Konstantin Frank Konstantin was of German heritage, born and raised in Ukraine. He held a Ph.D. in viticulture from the Polytechnic Institute of Odessa and became a successful viticulture professor and vineyard consultant. After WWII, he immigrated to the United States with his family. After a brief stay in New York City, Konstantin moved upstate to take a position at Cornell University’s Geneva Experiment Station. Dr. Frank believed from his years in Ukraine that the lack of proper rootstock, not the cold climate, was the reason for the failure of Vitis vinifera vines in the Finger Lakes region. He continued to promote his beliefs and to seek a sympathetic ear, which he found in Charles Fournier, a French champagne maker and President of nearby Gold Seal Vineyards. Communicating in French, Dr. Frank revealed to Fournier about his research for growing the delicate European vinifera grape varieties in cold climates. After purchasing some land on the western shores of Keuka Lake in 1958, Konstantin began grafting native rootstock from N. -

Acta Universitatis Agriculturae et Silviculturae Mendelianae Brunensis, 2013, LXI, No. 7, pp. 2669–2675 Wine tourism development and the resulting formation of regional strategic alliances in the form of clusters may lead to increasing the competitiveness of wineries in South Moravia in the southeastern part of the Czech Republic. The main research objective of this paper was to fi nd potential for wine tourism development and creating a plan for newly formed strategic alliance coordinating services off er all wineries in the region. This study describes the potential to off er services and products of wine growing areas in South Moravia region, suitable for promotion off ers wine tourism destinations and services. In principle, it is used the calculation for the establishment of the wine cluster according to Porter’s formula, and was designed by concentration coeffi cient of vineyards for wine cluster formation, which is based on the unique and specifi c conditions of the wine region of South Moravia. To achieve the objective of the study was conducted marketing research data collection and mapping current events and activities taking place in the wine-growing region of Moravia, promoting or off ering specifi c local products and services associated with gastronomy and wine. The dynamic development of the wine category, major changes in market and consumer demand are the main causes for the formation of associations of small and medium-sized wineries. -

WINE CATALOG 2016 Where Pennsylvania Wine Began Premier Award-Winning Wines Since 1964 Our Region The Lake Erie American Viticultural Area (AVA) is the largest US wine growing area east of the Rockies and was the first multi-state wine appellation to be approved. It covers the 300-mile long region along the south shore of Lake Erie from Toledo, Ohio, through Pennsylvania, to Buffalo, New York, on lands climatically affected by the lake. Virtually every existing vineyard lies in the narrow band below the first ridge south of the lakeshore which is known locally by the French term 'escarpment'. This arrangement provides a unique micro climate where the large mass of lake water holds heat from the summer which moderates local temperatures and provides warm breezes through autumn to delay typical first frost into November. Conversely. the lake moderates winter low temperatures, but keeps the area cooler into the spring, delaying first budding until past the typical last frost date. The steady sloped terrain below the escarpment also provides good cold air drainage. This is a somewhat similar situation to that of the Finger Lakes Region of New York state. In Erie County, Pennsylvania, where we are located, the escarpment lies closer to the Lake and is at its highest elevation of about 1500 ft, which is a rise of over 900 ft from the average Lake Erie elevation of 573 ft. As one goes either east or west the escarpment is lower and farther from the lake and the frost-free season is shorter and winter temperatures can be colder. -
