1 The Woman in the Wilderness The Further Development of Christian Apocalypticism I am the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end. — The Revelation of John, 22:13 Pope Urban II stood before an extraordinary assemblage of high Church officials and French nobles at Clermont in 1095 to implore them to come to the aid of Constantinople, beleaguered by a Seljuk Turkish army, and then liberate the holy city of Jerusalem from Muslim rule. “[A] race from the kingdom of the Persians, an accursed race, a race wholly alienated from God” has long occupied the spiritual seat of Christendom, slaughtering God’s chil- dren “by pillage and fire,” he reminded them in stark, ominous tones. They have taken many survivors into doleful slavery “into their own country” and “have either destroyed the churches of God or appropriated them for the rites of their own religion.” In language that was pointedly both apocalyptic and millenarian, Urban rallied the French nobles, who reportedly cried out, “God wills it! God wills it” as he promised that the Christian recovery of Jerusalem would mark the advent of the Millennium. While the French nobility was likely more motivated by the prospect of conquering “a land flowing with milk and honey,” commoners and peasants throughout Western Europe took the eschatological significance of what became the First Crusade to their hearts. With bloodthirsty zeal the crusading armies harried and massacred Rhineland German Jews on their way to Constantinople in 1096, some of the Christians doubtless taking literally the prediction in Revelation 19 that all who did not follow Christ would be “slain by the sword.” This notion further inspired them in the war against the Muslim population of Palestine as they carved out the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem by 1099, and embarked upon subsequent crusades that have come to characterize the history of medieval A Dream of the Judgment Day. -

We travel north of the border to study that understated contribution to Scottish Congregationalism, the Evangelical Union, explicitly through its academy. Lastly, like many others in 2011, we turn aside to mark the 400th anniversary of the King James Version of the Bible. In this magazine, our examination of this Jacobean masterpiece involves a consideration of its origins, amid the demands for further reform of the established church, and the growth of those forerunners of Congregationalism, the English separatists. NEWS AND VIEWS We were saddened to learn of the death of John Taylor, for many years the editor of the Transactions of the Congregational Historical Society and, after 1972, of its successor and our sister journal, the Journal of the United Reformed Church History Society . -

J2oges. CHICAGO, 1900. NOYES FAMILY. Reverend William Noyes was born in England during the year 1568. He matriculated at University College, Oxford, 15 November, 1588, at the age of twenty years, and was graduated B. A., 31 May, 1592. He was Rector of the Parish of Choulderton in Wiltshire, situated between Amesbury in Wiltshire and Andover in Hampshire, and eleven mile~ from Salisbury, which contains the great Salisbury Cathedral, built in the year 1220 A. D., whose lofty tower overlooks the dead Roman city of Sarum and '' Stonehenge," the ruins of the won derful pre-historic temple of the ancient Celtic Druids, in the midst of Salisbury Plain. The register of the Diocese shows that he officiated in the Parish from 1602 to 1620, at which time he resigned. -

COTTON MATHER’S WONDERS OF THE INVISIBLE WORLD: AN AUTHORITATIVE EDITION by PAUL M. WISE Under the direction of Reiner Smolinski ABSTRACT In Wonders of the Invisible World, Cotton Mather applies both his views on witchcraft and his millennial calculations to events at Salem in 1692. Although this infamous treatise served as the official chronicle and apologia of the 1692 witch trials, and excerpts from Wonders of the Invisible World are widely anthologized, no annotated critical edition of the entire work has appeared since the nineteenth century. This present edition seeks to remedy this lacuna in modern scholarship, presenting Mather’s seventeenth-century text next to an integrated theory of the natural causes of the Salem witch panic. The likely causes of Salem’s bewitchment, viewed alongside Mather’s implausible explanations, expose his disingenuousness in writing about Salem. William Noyes, rector of Uhoulderton,( 11 miles from Salisbury and near the seat of the ~arl of ~embroke,)was born in 1568; He married Anna Parker, who died and was buried in Uhol derton, Mch. 7,1657. She was sister to the Rev. Robert ~arker. ~er will, made Mch. 18,1655; probate Apr. 21, 1658, at Somerset s Deacon Nicholas House, Loncton, leaves 1 she to son7Rev. James Noyes and.< ~, ana cousin, ( nephew), the Rev. Thomas Parker, all of New England. These three came here in 1633. Wililam, the Rector, had most of his estate confiscated because he became a dissenter. His son the neve games and his colleague, Thomas ~arker were for the presbytery as opposed to the congregation, and opposed the Boston platform. Wil t shire, . James, born in/ 1608; went to Brazenose Uollege, OXford, but did not graduate. He taught, for his uncle ~homas Parker, in the Free School of Newbury, EnglandJuntil he came here to America. He became a preacher because of their influence. He married Sarah Drown, daUghter of Joseph Brown, of Southampton, Rants uo., ~ngland, just before they set sail from England in the MARY & JOHN, 1633. urunes d. Oct. 24, 1656 ; she d. Sept. 13, 1691. He left an estate of 657 bbs.llsh;6 d. James, who inherited intellectllal gifts from both sides of his family, was called one of the most learned and gifted of the Massachusetts preachers of his day. Book Interview Richard Francis Judge Sewall's Apology ISBN13: 9780007163632 Q: How did you find Judge Sewall's journals? Sewall's idées fixes range from noble to trivial . what fascinates you most about this man? A: I think the most fascinating thing about Sewall is just that—he covers the whole gamut of human life from the noble to the trivial. This makes him unique among people of his period. He's the only one who comes down to us as a complete person. It seems to me such a privilege that we can know what a seventeenth-century man dreamed about, for example. In some respects his dreams—especially his nightmares—are very recognizable to us. He frequently dreams of the loss of his wife or children. It's very touching that he recounted some of those dreams in Latin, so that if his wife read his diary she wouldn't be able to understand those passages and become upset. Perhaps one of the most enjoyable aspects of working on the diaries involved making connections that Sewall doesn't explicitly make for us. There's one entry when he describes taking his wife to Dorchester to eat strawberries in the orchard of some friends of theirs. Two or three weeks before that entry he describes a dream in which he hears his wife has died while visiting Dorchester. Quite obviously, though he nowhere says so, he takes her to the same place in order to confront and exorcise that nightmare, though of course she would never have known that was his real motive. -

ROWLAND August 2011 Copyright Gary A. Rowland 2011 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT Historians are divided concerning the ecclesiological thought of seventeenth-century minister John Cotton. Some argue that he supported a church structure based on suppression of lay rights in favor of the clergy, strengthening of synods above the authority of congregations, and increasingly narrow church membership requirements. By contrast, others arrive at virtually opposite conclusions. This thesis evaluates Cotton's correspondence and pamphlets through the lense of moderation to trace the evolution of Cotton's thought on these ecclesiological issues during his ministry in England and Massachusetts. Moderation is discussed in terms of compromise and the abatement of severity in the context of ecclesiastical toleration, the balance between lay and clerical power, and the extent of congregational and synodal authority.
