The canal stretches for 17.5 miles from points of land on its east and west ends, separating Cape Cod from mainland .Y Thousands and thousands of visitors drive over its Sagamore and Bourne bridges every summer, but the canal is worth a stop on its own. There are about 7 miles of paved walking/cycling paths on each side of the canal, and it’s a great place to fish, lobster, boat or just sit and watch the boats go by. Even better: Bring a picnic. At the Midway Recreation Point on the south side of the Canal – about 1½ miles east of the Bourne Bridge – there’s even a large picnic pavilion, with grills, tables and a fireplace. About 14,000 commercial and recreational boats use the waterway every year – no sailing allowed, though. If you don’t have your own boat, Hy-Line Cruises offers various cruises along the canal, including a standard three-hour sightseeing cruise, a Sunset Cocktail Cruise, and a Dixieland Jazz Cruise.
