He was the second son of Samuel John Peploe and his wife Margaret (née Mackay), a brother for Willy, who had been born in August 1910, in Royan. His earliest memory was being held up to the window at night at the back of the family flat in the New Town to see a hostile Zeppelin dropping bombs onto Leith during a unique raid made in April 1916, which cost 11 lives. The boys lived with their parents in a first floor flat at 13 India Street and went to school at The Edinburgh Academy at the foot of the New Town and both thrived, Willy going up to Oxford to study History at Magdalen. Denis was equally academically bright, but thrived also on the sporting field, excelling at cricket, rugby and golf. In the art department AC Dodds (the one-armed inspiration for the art-master in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie) was lenient with the tawse and encouraged Denis Peploe, c.1918 Peploe junior in his ambitions to become a painter. -

THE LEMOND GALLERY SCOTTISH CONTEMPORARY ART AN EXAMINATION OF EIGHT ARTISTS FROM TWO CRITICAL PHASES OF SCOTTISH ART TRAINING TWO WEEKS - Saturday 18th July to Sunday 2nd August 2015 CONTEMPORARY SCOTTISH ART AN EXAMINATION OF EIGHT ARTISTS FROM TWO CRITICAL PHASES OF SCOTTISH ART TRAINING BACKGROUND It is somewhat logical that, as we look at the Contemporary Scottish Art offering, we should find the roots of what we are looking at within the key Scottish educational establishments. As Scotland prospered from its dominant position within the industrial revolution (1760-1840) and the wealthy Victorian era (1837-1901), patronage and interest in the arts expanded and new art schools emerged in all of the main population centres – the Glasgow School of Art (GSA) 1845, the Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) which can trace its development to 1760, formed the current institution in 1906, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee (DOJD) 1892 and lastly Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen (GSAA) 1885. These institutions, together with the formation of the various artist bodies incorporated by Royal Charter including the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA 1826), the Royal Glasgow Institute (RGI 1861) and the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW 1876) together with the Paisley Art Institute (PAI 1876) would underpin the central foundations of subsequent art development in Scotland. Scottish Art history records two significant periods of art development in this period – the social realism of the Glasgow Boys (1870-1910) and the Scottish Colourists (c.1920-1940), whose popular idiom embraced the earlier work of the French impressionists and post-impressionists. -

It lists former Fellows from the foundation of the Society in 1783 to October 2002. Most are deceased Fellows up to and including the list given in the RSE Directory 2003 (Session 2002-3) but some former Fellows who left the Society by resignation or were removed from the roll are still living. HISTORY OF THE PROJECT Information on the Fellowship has been kept by the Society in many ways – unpublished sources include Council and Committee Minutes, Card Indices, and correspondence; published sources such as Transactions, Proceedings, Year Books, Billets, Candidates Lists, etc. All have been examined by the compilers, who have found the Minutes, particularly Committee Minutes, to be of variable quality, and it is to be regretted that the Society’s holdings of published billets and candidates lists are incomplete. The late Professor Neil Campbell prepared from these sources a loose-leaf list of some 1500 Ordinary Fellows elected during the Society’s first hundred years. He listed name and forenames, title where applicable and national honours, profession or discipline, position held, some information on membership of the other societies, dates of birth, election to the Society and death or resignation from the Society and reference to a printed biography. -

PRESS RELEASE ERIC RIMMINGTON : NEW PAINTINGS Bohun Gallery, Henley-on-Thames 8th – 27th November 2010 Stoneware, 2010 Stony Ground, 2009 Oil on linen canvas Oil on linen canvas Eric Rimmington is one of the UK’s most original still life artists. His virtuosic paintings are characterised by his eclectic choice of objects, placed apparently at random against a bare studio wall. The effect is both beautiful and intriguing. In the words of the art critic William Packer, ‘Eric Rimmington has become both one of the country’s most distinguished exponents in the field [of still life painting], and one of the most particular and distinctive.’ Eric Rimmington’s exhibition of new paintings will be on show at Bohun Gallery, Henley-on-Thames, from 8th to 27th November. Eric Rimmington studied at the Slade School of Art in London during the 1940s and 50s. Over the last 50 years he has exhibited widely throughout the UK, Europe and the USA. His work is represented in the Imperial War Museum, the Museum of London, Bradford City Art Gallery, the Gulbenkian Foundation, Scarborough Art Gallery, the University of Wisconsin and in many esteemed private collections. There is also a large collection of his work in the Conservatory and the Grande Salle at Raymond Blanc’s restaurant, Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons in Oxfordshire. Eric Rimmington has exhibited regularly at Bohun Gallery since 2001, following eighteen years of exhibiting in London.
