DUNDEE CITY COUNCIL REPORT TO: Leisure, Arts and Communities Committee - 25 April 2011 REPORT ON: Dundee Industrial Heritage Ltd - Revenue Support 2011-2012 REPORT BY: Director of Leisure and Communities REPORT NO: 98-2011 1.0 PURPOSE OF REPORT 1.1 To submit to the Committee a request for renewal of Revenue Grant funding to Dundee Industrial Heritage Ltd for the year 2011-2012. 2.0 RECOMMENDATIONS It is recommended that the Committee: 2.1 remits the Director of Leisure & Communities, on behalf of Dundee City Council, to enter into a one year Service Level Agreement with Dundee Industrial Heritage Ltd, subject to on-going monitoring and evaluation as to its efficiency, economy and effectiveness. 2.2 remits the Director of Leisure and Communities to keep these arrangements under review and amend as appropriate. 2.3 approves the Revenue Grant Funding amounting to £63,000 per the period 1 April 2011 - 31 March 2012. 3.0 FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS 3.1 The funding recommended is £63,000 from the Leisure and Communities Department 2011-2012 Revenue Budget as shown in the budget at Appendix 1. 3.2 The terms and conditions of Revenue Grant funding will be contained within a Service Level Agreement for 2011-2012 between Dundee City Council and Dundee Industrial Heritage Ltd. 4.0 MAIN TEXT 4.1 Dundee Industrial Heritage Limited (DIH) operates two of Dundee’s premier tourist attractions – Discovery Point and Verdant Works. It is a charitable company, the trading body of Dundee Heritage Trust. The Trust is the only independent charity in Scotland operating two five star rated museums 4.2 Review of the year 2010-2011 • Over 190,000 visits to the Trust’s venues. -

It will take your life indifferently. Your response to this is crucial: both accepting, and defying it, is essential. The catalogue to the current exhibition “Joan Eardley: A Sense of Place” at the Scottish National Gallery of Art in Edinburgh (running till May 21 2017) tells us that, when asked, in 1961, she said she didn’t much like Turner and didn’t know much about MacTaggart, and that regarding her immediate interests in the art world, she named Jackson Pollock and the Tachistes. It isn’t surprising. The artist’s job isn’t to create a tradition in which she or he might comfortably settle, but to do the work. Certainly, the energy and painterly abandon of Pollock’s American abstract expressionism and its European counterpart is related to what we see in the Catterline paintings, but how much more comforting, warmly settled, patterned to give pleasure, Pollock and his contemporary abstract expressionists are nowadays, when we return to them, compared to the still troubling, still imposing power of the real sea Eardley is delivering to us. -

Aberdeen Art Gallery is home to one of the finest collections in the UK, including works by influential Scottish artists, designers and makers such as Henry Raeburn, Joan Eardley, Samuel Peploe, Rachel McLean, Bill Gibb and James Cromar Watt, as well as nationally and internationally-acclaimed artists including Barbara Hepworth, Francis Bacon, Tracey Emin and Claude Monet. The redevelopment has dramatically increased the amount of display space for the Nationally-Recognised Collection, with the number of galleries increasing from 11 to 19, with a further three spaces presenting a programme of regularly-changing special exhibitions. The number of items from the permanent collection on display has increased from 370 in 2015 to 1,080 in 2019. The fresh new approach to displaying the collection has created a rich variety of experiences for visitors as they move from gallery to gallery. A wide range of artforms and media, the use of colour, hands-on interactives, music, innovative display methods and engaging interpretive information combine to create a range of experiences, moods and stories for visitors.
