Mary Lamb was already a successful author, writing under the pseudonym ‘Violet Fane’, and her circle was said to include Oscar Wilde, Whistler, Swinburne and Lillie Langtry. They lived at Mell, Co. Louth, and were well-known in London society. THE SCOTTISH SALE | 7 6 6 There are various theories as to what may have attracted Crawhall JOSEPH CRawhall RSW (1861-1913) to North Africa, including the essays written by his friend RB Souvenir of a Tough Day Cunninghame Graham, but most likely he relished the cheap cost of signed, inscribed and dated ‘Souvenir of a “TOUGH DAY”/E.A.Hunt/ living (six shillings a day, including servants and access to two horses) from/J.Crawhall/Nov 10th - ‘91’ and a warm dry climate which was beneficial to his fading health. oil on panel Despite his reserved nature Crawhall was a central figure at the British 26.2 x 34 cm.
