Pegs, Cords, and Ghuls: Meter of Classical Arabic Poetry Hazel Scott Haverford College Department of Linguistics, Swarthmore College Fall 2009 There are many reasons to read poetry, filled with heroics and folly, sweeping metaphors and engaging rhymes. It can reveal much about a shared cultural history and the depths of the human soul; for linguists, it also provides insights into the nature of language itself. As a particular subset of a language, poetry is one case study for understanding the use of a language and the underlying rules that govern it. This paper explores the metrical system of classical Arabic poetry and its theoretical representations. The prevailing classification is from the 8th century C.E., based on the work of the scholar al-Khaliil, and I evaluate modern attempts to situate the meters within a more universal theory. I analyze the meter of two early Arabic poems, and observe the descriptive accuracy of al-Khaliil’s system, and then provide an analysis of the major alternative accounts. By incorporating linguistic concepts such as binarity and prosodic constraints, the newer models improve on the general accessibility of their theories with greater explanatory potential. The use of this analysis to identify and account for the four most commonly used meters, for example, highlights the significance of these models over al-Khaliil’s basic enumerations. The study is situated within a discussion of cultural history and the modern application of these meters, and a reflection on the oral nature of these poems. The opportunities created for easier cross-linguistic comparisons are crucial for a broader understanding of poetry, enhanced by Arabic’s complex levels of metrical patterns, and with conclusions that can inform wider linguistic study.* Introduction Classical Arabic poetry is traditionally characterized by its use of one of the sixteen * I would like to thank my advisor, Professor K. -

Abstract The relationship between magyarization and Hungarian civil society during the reform era of Hungarian history (1790-1848) is the subject of this dissertation. This thesis examines the cultural and political activities of three liberal oppositional nobles: András Fáy (1786-1864), István Bezerédj (1796-1856) and Ödön Beöthy (1796-1854). These three men were chosen as the basis of this study because of their commitment to a two- pronged approach to politics: they advocated greater cultural magyarization in the multiethnic Hungarian Kingdom and campaigned to extend the protection of the Hungarian constitution to segments of the non-aristocratic portion of the Hungarian population. -

Empire, Nation, and the Islamic World: Bosnian Muslim Reformists between the Habsburg and Ottoman Empires, 1901-1914 Harun Buljina Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2019 © 2019 Harun Buljina All rights reserved ABSTRACT Empire, Nation, and the Islamic World: Bosnian Muslim Reformists between the Habsburg and Ottoman Empires, 1901-1914 Harun Buljina This dissertation is a study of the early 20th-century Pan-Islamist reform movement in Bosnia-Herzegovina, tracing its origins and trans-imperial development with a focus on the years 1901-1914. Its central figure is the theologian and print entrepreneur Mehmed Džemaludin Čaušević (1870-1938), who returned to his Austro-Hungarian-occupied home province from extended studies in the Ottoman lands at the start of this period with an ambitious agenda of communal reform. Čaušević’s project centered on tying his native land and its Muslim inhabitants to the wider “Islamic World”—a novel geo-cultural construct he portrayed as a viable model for communal modernization. Over the subsequent decade, he and his followers founded a printing press, standardized the writing of Bosnian in a modified Arabic script, organized the country’s Ulema, and linked these initiatives together in a string of successful Arabic-script, Ulema-led, and theologically modernist print publications. By 1914, Čaušević’s supporters even brought him to a position of institutional power as Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Reis-ul-Ulema (A: raʾīs al-ʿulamāʾ), the country’s highest Islamic religious authority and a figure of regional influence between two empires. -

Edin Muftić Homer: An Arabic portrait1 Homer is rightfully seen as the first teacher of Hellenism, the poet who educated the Greek, who in turn educated Europe. But, as is well known, Europe doesn’t have a monopoly on Greek heritage. It was also present in the Islamic tradition, where it manifested itself differently. Apart from phi- losophy, mathematics, astronomy, medicine and pharmacology, Greek poetry, even if usually not translated, was also widely read among the Arab-Islamic intellectual elite. The author analyses the extent to which Homer’s works circulated, how well known were his poetics, and the influence his verses exerted during the heyday of Classical Arab-Islamic civilization. Keywords: Homer; translation movement; Al-Biruni; arabic poetry; Al-Farabi; Averroes INTRODUCTION The Greek and Arab epic tradition have much in common. Themes of tribal enmity, invasions and plunder, abduction of women, revenge, heroism, chivalry and love feature prom- inently in both traditions. While the Greeks have Hercules, Perseus, Theseus, Odysseus, Jason or Achilles, the Arabs have ʻAntar bin Šaddād (the “Arab Achilles”), Sayf bin ī Yazan, Az-Zīr Sālim and many others. When it comes to the actual performance of poetry, similarities be- Ḏ tween the two traditions are even greater. Homeric aoidos playing his lyre has a direct coun- terpart in Arab rawin playing his rababa. The Arab wandering poet often shares the fate of his Greek colleague (Imruʼ al-Qays, arafa and Al-Aʻšá, and Abū Nuwās and Al-Mutanabbī are the most famous examples). Greek tyrants who were famous for hosting poets like Ibycus, Anacre- Ṭ on, Simonides, Bacchylides or Pindar, while expelling others like Alcaeus, have a royal counter- part in An-Nuʻmān bin al-Mun ir, the ruler of Hira. -

Characteristics of the West-Central-Bavarian vowel system - a comparison between adults and children The West-Central-Bavarian (WCB) dialect, which is spoken in the south of Germany and in most parts of Austria, has often been a subject of research, due to its large vowel system with an astonishing number of diphthongs, that do not exist in the corresponding Standard language at all. Although there is a large amount of literature concerned with descriptions of the dialect, nearly all of it is based on impressionistic auditory descriptions (Zehetner, 1985; Merkle, 1976; Capell, 1979; Mansell, 1973a; Keller, 1961; Mansell, 1973a). While in the last decades systematic acoustic analyses on the Austrian side of the Bavarian dialect have been increasingly elaborated (Moosmüller et al.), the German side still remains largely unexplored. However, there is much evidence that Standard German (SG) is superimposed on German dialects, causing sound change in the respective dialects (e.g. Müller et al. (2001) for East-Franconian, Bukmaier & Harrington (2014) for Augsburg German). The goal of the current study was 1) to systematically measure some of the defining vowel characteristics of WCB for an acoustically based analysis of the Bavarian vowel system and 2) to investigate whether these characteristics are being preserved across generations or if there is a sound change in progress observable, in which young speakers show more standard characteristics than old on some attributes of vowels where Bavarian and the Standard are known to differ. The new concept for testing 2) is to combine synchronic and diachronic approaches in order to detect sound change. -

Introduction The Arabic alphabet has been used to write Bosnian from the 15th to the mid 20th century. In the early 20th century Mehmed Džemaludin Čaušević extended the alphabet, adding several letters including two letters that are proposed for encoding: • ARABIC LETTER NOON WITH INVERTED SMALL V for nj [ɲ], • ARABIC LETTER HAH WITH INVERTED SMALL V BELOW for ć [tɕ]. Other additional letters, which are already encoded, were used in this orthography: ,[For c [ts ڄ ARABIC LETTER DYEH 0684 • ,[For č [tʃ چ ARABIC LETTER TCHEH 0686 • ,[was used for both dž [dʒ] and đ [dʑ ج 062C ARABIC LETTER JEEM • ,[For lj [ʎ ڵ 06B5 ARABIC LETTER LAM WITH SMALL V • ,[For [u ۆ 06C6 ARABIC LETTER OE • .[For [o ۉ 06C9 ARABIC LETTER KIRGHIZ YU • Čaušević’s alphabet was used in publications from 1908 until the 1940s. That alphabet is referred to by several names: arebica, harfovica, matufovica, matufovača, mektebica. According to Pjanić (2009), several periodicals used arebica: Tarik (1908-1911), Muallim (1910-1913), Misbah (1912-1913) and Jeni Sabah (1914); and also the last publication using Arebica was Seid Serdarević Fikh ʾulʿibādāt (1941). Those two letters are mentioned in descriptions of Bosnian Arebica such as Bourgeois (1913), Lehfeldt (2001), Gažáková (2014). In recent years, there has been interest in Čaušević’s orthography. Notably in works by Al-Zubi and Cicak-Al-Zubi, in the Šegrt Suljica comics published in the Bosnian children magazine Elif. The 062C ARABIC LETTER is used for dž [dʒ] and another letter represents đ [dʑ], for ج JEEM example Al-Zubi and Cicak-Al-Zubi use 0620 ARABIC LETTER AIN WITH and a letter ARABIC LETTER HAH WITH SMALL V ڠ THREE DOTS ABOVE BELOW, which could potentially be encoded if in use, can be found in some character charts. -

iQa;;&u*,"" , I iii The "Orthodox" Orthography of Solomon Birnbaum Kalman Weiser YORK UNIVERSITY Apart from the YIVO Institute's Standard Yiddish Orthography, the prevalent sys tem in the secular sector, two other major spelling codes for Yiddish are current today. Sovetisher oysteyg (Soviet spelling) is encountered chiefly among aging Yid dish speakers from the former Soviet bloc and appears in print with diminishing frequency since the end of the Cold War. In contrast, "maskiIic" spelling, the system haphazardly fashioned by 19th-century proponents of the Jewish Enlightenment (which reflects now obsolete Germanized conventions) continues to thrive in the publications of the expanding hasidic sector. As the one group that has by and large preserved and even encouraged Yiddish as its communal vernacular since the Holocaust, contemporary ultra-Orthodox (and primarily hasidic) Jews regard themselves as the custodians of the language and its traditions. Yiddish is considered a part of the inheritance of their pious East European ancestors, whose way of life they idealize and seek to recreate as much as possible. l The historic irony of this development-namely, the enshrinement of the work of secularized enlighteners, who themselves were bent on modernizing East European Jewry and uprooting Hasidism-is probably lost upon today's tens of thousands of hasidic Yiddish speakers. The irony, however, was not lost on Solomon (in German, Salomo; in Yiddish, Shloyme) Birnbaum (1898-1989), a pioneering Yiddish linguist and Hebrew pa leographer in the ultra-Orthodox sector. This essay examines Birnbaum's own "Or thodox" orthography for Yiddish in both its purely linguistic and broader ideolog ical contexts in interwar Poland, then home to the largest Jewish community in Europe and the world center of Yiddish culture. -

version July 19 How to edit IPA When you want to enter the International Phonetic Association (IPA) character set with a computer keyboard, you need to know how to enter each IPA character with a sequence of keyboard strokes. This document describes a number of techniques. The complete SAMPA and RTR mapping can be found in the attached html documents. The main html document (ipa96.html) comes in a pdf-version (ipa96.pdf) too. 1 How to use SAMPA for editing IPA The Speech Assessment Method (SAM) Phonetic Alphabet has been developed by John Wells (http://www.phon.ucl.ac.uk/home/sampa). The goal was to map 176 IPA characters into the range of 7-bit ASCII, which is a set of 96 characters. The principle is to represent a single IPA character by a single ASCII character.
