Highland Fairways Welcomes Cher Boney ~ Office Manager and Andres Bilbao ~ Maintenance Volume 34, Issue 2 Lakeland, Florida February 2021 Highland Fairways Welcomes Cher Boney ~ Office Manager and Andres Bilbao ~ Maintenance During the past few weeks, two new faces are in Highland Fairways. Hired as our office manager, Cher Boney, comes to us with a plethora of experience. She began her career as an Office Manager for a 55+ Condo Association in Inverness. Then she moved to Office Coordinator with Sun Communities at Ariana Villages and finally at Kings Manor in Lakeland. Due to her mom’s health, she took a two-year hiatus to become a full-time caregiver for her mother and granddaughter. When Cher was ready to return to full-time employment, Highland Fairways had a position open. Born and raised in Manassas, Virginia, Cher moved to Florida in 2000. She and Steve (Staley) live in Lakeland with their furry best friend Layla, a ten-and-a-half-year-old Boxer/Pit Bull mix. Cher’s two sons, Jordan and Brenden, live in Gainesville, Virginia. She has two stepchildren (children of love) Cody Staley and Ashtin Delapaz. Three amazing grandchildren – Khale, Kade, and (Princess) Jaxtyn round out the fami- ly. In addition to spending time with family and friends, Cher’s hobbies include boating, camping, photog- raphy, and collecting crystals and stones. When asked how she liked Highland Fairways, she replied, “I am enjoying being part of the HF team. I look forward to the time we can resume normal operations, and I can meet more residents.” Welcome, Cher! Another new face is Andres Bilbao, our new maintenance man. The youngest of four boys, he was born in New York but raised in Broward County, Florida. His father is from New York and his mother is from Puerto Rico. Andres and his wife Jackie have been married for five years. He has three children- Jonathon, Brittney, and Cassandra. When not working in Highland Fairways, “Andy” likes to build plastic models and race remote-control cars and trucks. He says, “I love Highland Fairways. The people are very friendly and kind.” We welcome you, and we are pleased you have become part of our community. History of Groundhog Day Groundhog Day originates from an ancient celebration of the midway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox—the day right in the middle of astronomical winter. According to superstition, sunny skies that day signify a stormy and cold second half of winter while cloudy skies indicate the arrival of warm weather. The trail of Phil’s history leads back to Clymer H. Freas, city editor of the Punxsutawney Spirit newspaper. Inspired by a group of local groundhog hunters—whom he would dub the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club— Freas declared Phil as America’s ocial forecasting groundhog in 1887. As he continued to embellish the groundhog's story year after year, other newspapers picked it up, and soon everyone looked to Punxsutawney Phil for the prediction of when spring would return to the country.

The day will be celebrated in both the United States and Canada. Historically, the month of February has borne special significance for people living in the northern regions of the world who are subject to harsh winter weather. For them, there has long been a desire for methods of predicting when spring will arrive and the warmer temperatures will return. For farmers waiting to plant or harvest crops, sailors, ship dispatchers, or anyone planning a journey, accurate foreknowledge of weather conditions is important. Prior to advances in technology that led to the development of weather forecasting into today’s predictive science, people used their experiences to make predictions. This is evidenced through the various traditions, rites, and celebrations that have prevailed for thousands of years, many of which have been a function of astrological conditions.

  • Why Groundhog Day Cards? Every Year in Late January We Send Out
Why Groundhog Day Cards? Every year in late January we send out about 650 greeting cards (~275 physical cards and 375 e-cards) to friends, colleagues, associates, suppliers, past present and prospective clients and sponsors. It’s a pretty obvious marketing ploy. As a promotion strategy it meets a bunch of tests: Unique, surprising, use of humour, repetition, subliminal messages, … Business Schools would surely love to write up the AFS GHD campaigns for a Marketing case study. Psychology Departments too, I suppose. But why Ground Hog Day? Surely this sort of attention seeking won’t be taken seriously. I had a client tell me this recently and I thought, too many people in organizational life are too tightly wound, especially managers. A sense of humour is actually a management competency, but I’m not sure he gets it. Groundhog Day is just the opposite. It’s supposed to remind us we are human and not to take ourselves so seriously. But maybe it’s me. Despite the evident brilliance in these cards I’ve also had indications over the years that the receiver doesn’t quite ‘get it’, either in general, or perhaps in particular with a given card. (And if one person gives you feedback you can bet ten others are wondering in silence. Hence this note.) I have to admit, my sense of humour can be a bit eccentric, if not to say esoteric. So why Groundhog Day cards. I’ve had a fascination with Groundhog Day for as long as I can remember. Though it is a (very) minor event in the calendar of noteworthy dates, it has always ranked high for me; even as a teenager, it was right up there with April Fool’s Day! The morning radio always made a bit of a show of it – groundhog sees his shadow: six more weeks of winter! And this was long before Bill Murray’s movie, Groundhog Day.
