There are plenty of ways to enjoy downtime on your holiday in New Zealand. New Zealand can be mellow or action packed, but one thing is for sure, it is always epic! Hi there! My name is Jack Bennett, but most of my friends know me as “Jacko.” I was born on February 11, 1932 (and I know what you’re thinking ... I don’t look a day over 75)! I was born and raised in Listowel, Ontario to my mother, Isabel Bennett and my father, Maurice Bennett. I grew up with an older brother (Ted), and two younger sisters (Bonnie and Barbara). I have two children (Mary Ellen and James), both of whom are married and have blessed me with the best four grandchildren. In 1928, my father purchased his first truck and started a trucking company in a car garage behind his house. His company, Listowel Transport Lines, became well-known throughout Ontario and its borders as “The Silver and Black Fleet.” At a young age, I dropped out of school to help out with the family business. I’ve spent most of my life working in the trucking industry. My brother and I eventually purchased the company from our father and rebranded the business to J.E. Transport in the early ‘70s. We moved the company from our small town in Listowel, Ontario to Cambridge, Ontario and from there our business began booming! In 1976, we expanded the business into trailer leasing, which we named BenLea Leasing Limited. In 1990, I decided it was time to retire and move down to the sunny south! We sold J.E Transport and I was lucky enough that my kids were able to take over BenLea Leasing Limited, which continues to be a successful business to this day. From 1990 to recent years, I had enjoyed my retirement in the Florida Keys. I enjoyed spending my days in the warmer weather enjoying a Manhattan ... or two! I also enjoyed travelling across the globe, playing golf, going deep sea fishing, boating and loved playing a game of crib or euchre with family and friends. With recent health issues, I had resided back to Cambridge close to family and friends, and now you! Although I am unable to enjoy golf, deep sea fishing, and travelling anywhere further than Listowel, Ontario, I still enjoy a game of crib and euchre ... as well as a Manhattan. You can find me in Room 320 if you’re up for a game or are in need of some company. Just make sure to give me a heads up, as I need time to put my hearings aids in! Groundhog Day Thousands of years ago when animalism and nature worship were prevalent, people in the part of Europe where Germany is today, believed that the badger had the power to predict the coming of spring. They watched the badger to know when to plant their crops. This tradition was brought over to North America, predominantly to Pennsylvania in the United States, where it was the groundhog, not the badger, which made these “predictions.” According to folklore, if the groundhog sees its shadow on February 2nd, it will return to its burrow, indicating that there will be six more weeks of winter. If it does not see its shadow, then spring is on What’s your predication? Will there an the way. early spring or six more weeks of winter? The Groundhog Day concept first became popular in Canada in 1956 when Wiarton Willie became a household name for his early February weather predictions. Wiarton’s Groundhog Day Festival grew as Willie’s fame increased. It became one of the largest winter festivals in Bruce County, Canada. There are also other groundhogs in different parts of Canada. For example, Shubenacadie Sam is reportedly the first groundhog in the country to stick its head out on Groundhog Day. Other groundhogs include: Gary the Groundhog in Ontario, Brandon Bob in Manitoba and Balzac Billy in Alberta. Many Canadians celebrate Groundhog Day. Some Christian churches also celebrate Candlemas on this day, while others use Groundhog Day to take down their Christmas decorations. Groundhog Day is growing more and more popular in Canada. There is a festival in Wiarton, Bruce County, Ontario, where the town groundhog, Wiarton Willie, delivers his “prediction” early in the morning on February 2nd every year. Did you know ... Groundhog Day organizers maintain that the rodents’ predictions are accurate 75 to 90 percent of the time. However, Canadian meteorological data prove the groundhogs’ success rate is quite low. Residents’ and Manager’s meeting will be taking place on two different days and two different times.
