  • Well-Grounded
Well-Grounded The Story of Groundhog Day Why celebrate a rodent? There are religious holidays of all types, national holidays that honor heroes and events, and even silly holidays like National Candy Corn Day that we celebrate “just for fun.” But a day devoted to a chubby rodent that spends a lot of time underground? Now that’s a holiday worth discussing. Like many unusual holidays, this one goes back centuries. Early European Christians celebrated the Feast of the Presentation, honoring the day when Mary and Joseph first brought the infant Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem, 40 days after his birth on Christmas Day. Later, this became the day when priests blessed the candles—candle mass—used in this celebration. Candlemas Day, February 2, merged with other pre-Christian celebrations, marking the first possible day when hibernating animals might awaken and the end of winter was in sight. Candlemas Day and the Hedgehog Ancient wisdom from the United Kingdom maintains that if there is nice weather on Candlemas Day, harsh winter weather will follow: If Candlemas Day is clear and bright, Winter will have another bite. If Candlemas Day brings cloud and rain, Winter is gone and will not come again. The Romans brought the Candlemas Day weather superstition north to the Germanic peoples they encountered during their conquest of northern Europe. The Germans incorporated it into their own folklore. They concluded that if the hedgehog, a common hibernating animal in their area, awoke to sunshine on Candlemas Day, he would cast a shadow and thus predict continued winter weather.

The day will be celebrated in both the United States and Canada. Historically, the month of February has borne special significance for people living in the northern regions of the world who are subject to harsh winter weather. For them, there has long been a desire for methods of predicting when spring will arrive and the warmer temperatures will return. For farmers waiting to plant or harvest crops, sailors, ship dispatchers, or anyone planning a journey, accurate foreknowledge of weather conditions is important. Prior to advances in technology that led to the development of weather forecasting into today’s predictive science, people used their experiences to make predictions. This is evidenced through the various traditions, rites, and celebrations that have prevailed for thousands of years, many of which have been a function of astrological conditions.

  • Why Groundhog Day Cards? Every Year in Late January We Send Out
Why Groundhog Day Cards? Every year in late January we send out about 650 greeting cards (~275 physical cards and 375 e-cards) to friends, colleagues, associates, suppliers, past present and prospective clients and sponsors. It’s a pretty obvious marketing ploy. As a promotion strategy it meets a bunch of tests: Unique, surprising, use of humour, repetition, subliminal messages, … Business Schools would surely love to write up the AFS GHD campaigns for a Marketing case study. Psychology Departments too, I suppose. But why Ground Hog Day? Surely this sort of attention seeking won’t be taken seriously. I had a client tell me this recently and I thought, too many people in organizational life are too tightly wound, especially managers. A sense of humour is actually a management competency, but I’m not sure he gets it. Groundhog Day is just the opposite. It’s supposed to remind us we are human and not to take ourselves so seriously. But maybe it’s me. Despite the evident brilliance in these cards I’ve also had indications over the years that the receiver doesn’t quite ‘get it’, either in general, or perhaps in particular with a given card. (And if one person gives you feedback you can bet ten others are wondering in silence. Hence this note.) I have to admit, my sense of humour can be a bit eccentric, if not to say esoteric. So why Groundhog Day cards. I’ve had a fascination with Groundhog Day for as long as I can remember. Though it is a (very) minor event in the calendar of noteworthy dates, it has always ranked high for me; even as a teenager, it was right up there with April Fool’s Day! The morning radio always made a bit of a show of it – groundhog sees his shadow: six more weeks of winter! And this was long before Bill Murray’s movie, Groundhog Day.
